Torrent

I am new to torrent. I have never used torrent. Now I am planning to use torrent.

Can you guys recommend best torrent client & best torrent search engine?

And any info/suggestion you guys would like to give to a new torrent user.

Torrent clients: I’ve only really tried µTorrent and Tixati, both doing pretty well, µTorrent had a more fluid GUI for me though, Tixati seems to… stutter.

Torrent Search Engines: Most of these link to unauthorized copies of copyrighted work and don’t comply very well with taking them down, suggestion any such site may or may not be against the policy of the forum and hence I won’t suggest one.

Other: Don’t download random things, torrents can also contain malware like all other things. Don’t download illegal things. If you are going to do the thing in the last sentence anyway, don’t mention it anywhere. :-X

:-X

Sanya,

I tried UTorrent, qBittorrent & Tixati.

UTorrent - Many unnecessary apps during install. After install everything from the GUI can be removed through preferences but that "slow downloading, download some ilivid or some ad on the GUI cannot be removed & if you accidently click on it, it downloads & installs few craps. I dont like that ad cannot be removed.

Tixati - is good but looks like its good for advanced users, atleast I find it so.

qBittorent - I liked this, clean & simple install & GUI. The only prob is that when I check for port “check for ports” mentioned in gizmo forum I get failed with this. UTorrent & Tixati gets success. I tried changing the port in qBittorent as mentioned in gizmo forum. I tried many ports between the range mentioned in that forum but I get failed message. I was using my test system XP SP3 with Windows FW & no AV or other security software.

I have decided to try qBittorent as client & kickass as search.

I am going to use qBittorent on Win 7 64. It has CIS Suite installed with default settings. I guess I will have to make changes in CIS for qBittorent. Can you help with this?

You said dont download illegal things. How would I make out what is legal & illegal?

All unrelated apps etc can be declined in one way or another during installation and the ads can be removed however it’s a bit tricky, you have to go into the advanced of the advanced settings, the long list, can’t remember what it’s called, but then you have to search for something like ‘offer’ or something like that and then disable them.

Not really… I just set Tixati as an allowed application in both HIPS and Firewall… seems to be working, if you want you can check this thread Comodo Forum

Well… I don’t know how to explain it… Generally most things you see on those sites are illegal, for example I just visited the front page of that site you mentioned and couldn’t find one legal torrent.

Sanya,

I will check UTorrent’s all the settings/options & see if I can disable the advert.

I will make the changes in CIS as you have mentioned & see how it works.

Few more query

Is there any feature/function or performance or download speed difference between install & portable version? I am planning to use portable.

I have 4mbps cable broadband connection. This is the max speed plan my ISP offers. Is this fine for torrent download? (generally I guess on 4mbps, the download speed is 500kbps i.e 1/8 ratio or something, right?)
My monthly limit is 10gb.

Will I get good download speed with torrent clients defaults or I should optimize it for speed as mentioned in various forums like gizmo, etc…?

Should I use VPN or hide my torrent activities?

freedownloadmanager has BitTorrent option, does this means I can download torrent with fdm without the need of a torrent client?

Please be aware that this is definitely not the place to discuss illegal activities… 88)

Although I do believe that there are plenty of valid reasons to use a VPN while using torrents, their use has become widespread among those who use torrents to download illegal software. Thus, although I assume your question about VPN’s is not intended to hint at your downloading illegal software :P0l, be very careful about the way you ask your questions about torrents. This is a very delicate matter when in comes to the forum policy.

If there is any hint that anyone on this forum is trying to figure out how to download illegal software, or hide their downloading of illegal software, that topic will be locked immediately.

Heffed & Chiron,

I didn’t asked about VPN to hide illegal downloads.

I meant was, as I am new to torrents & I read about open ports, forward ports & dont know what these are & does, & what all is revealed using torrent, & I asked so that I can be careful using torrent.

That’s good. :-TU

I think you have a pretty good idea about what would be illegal to download…

If an application is freeware, then it’s most likely not illegal to download it from a torrent. You could always visit the developers site to see if they don’t allow it to be distributed in any way other than from their official download site. Some official download sites even offer torrent downloads. (But if it’s freeware, then why not download it from the developer rather than risk a download that may have been tampered with from a torrent?)

However, if the software is payware and you’re getting it for free, then it’s obviously illegal.

Many unnecessary apps during install. After install everything from the GUI can be removed through preferences but that "slow downloading, download some ilivid or some ad on the GUI cannot be removed & if you accidently click on it, it downloads & installs few craps. Open the browser and look in the addons to find it and remove unwanted addon's if any and if it can be done

Also I uploaded a .zip file called “unwanted ads” in my post. Download it and run each one of them one at a time. Then be done with it

Should I use VPN or hide my torrent activities?
If your doing it for privacy reasons then why not. We all do it the when it comes to websites. P2p shouldn't be any different. It really depends on how you want to view it and everyone has there own point of view.
I read about open ports, forward ports & dont know what these are & does, & what all is revealed using torrent
You don't need to know the technical parts(Geeks like me like to know every little bit about it but that can be a different conversation for another day). I'll put it in laymen's terms for you. You need to pick a port. If you don't pick, it'll pick one for you. If you want to attempt to hide your traffic, it wont help much(seriously it won't) but i guess its better then nothing. Pick a port that a popular game server uses like counter strike as an example. It Uses 27017. So use that port Your done. :-TU

I like qBitorrent (just a personal preference)

I will check UTorrent's all the settings/options & see if I can disable the advert.
disable DHT, Peer Exchange and local peer discovery <---I won't get into the detail why as this post is long enough

Also check your firewall logs to see if bittorrent is being restricted <–Thats the simplest way

I removed the advert in the following way. Hope I didn’t disabled anything needed.

Latest UTorrent Portable.

I went into advanced settings. Found 4 entries mentioned as offer, 3 were set to “True” & 1 didn’t had any value. I set the 3 entries to " False". Now there is no advert. Lets see if it returns.

Attached is the screenshot of 4 entries.

About VPN - I guess it will affect the download speed i.e decrese the download speed, right? How much affect?

Can you PM me the details?

qBittorrent - I get failed, error - couldn’t see your service, reason - connection timed out.

I get this error for any port I try.

XP SP3
qBittorrent portable
Windows Firewall - qBittorrent is ticked under exceptions
No other security softwares

qBittorrent - I get failed, error - couldn’t see your service, reason - connection timed out.
Sounds like issues with magnet links

or

utp:\ <— if using qbitorrent, go download something. then click “trackers”

look at the tracker addresses, right click on one of the addressses and click “change seleted url”
change from utp:\ to http:\ now do it all of them.

Does that, make a difference

I change my recommendations (take it or leave it) everyone has there own preference
disable DHT, Peer Exchange and local peer discovery <—if using a private tracker
enable DHT, Peer Exchange and local peer discovery <—if using a public tracker

If all else fails, I would just get utorrent and ask on the forums there

Jay,

I get the error when I check the port with canyouseeme website?

I tried the game port too mentioned by you in your previous post along with few other ports try but the same error.

UTorrent & Tixati gets success but qBittorrent fails. I also tried UTorrent & Tixati ports with qBit but same error.

XP SP3
Windows FW - qBit under exceptions checked.

Sanya,

I checked the link mentioned by you. There it is mentioned that the new p2p rule should be above the block rule.

I want to know if it should be just above the block rule or it can be any place above the block rule?

When I created the p2p rule & checked global rules, it was on the top i.e first place, is this fine?

http://fim.413chan.net/fim/src/131343833270-Lyra_I_dunno.png

Iunno =S Depends on your other rules I guess, as long as you don’t have a rule that conflicts with that one rule then it shouldn’t be a problem, however I would personally move the rule below the block rule when not using the torrent program and then move it up again when using the torrent program. But honestly I seem to get away with no global rules at all and just having an application rule that allows all traffic in and out from the torrent program.

Edit: Thinking about it, I should change that to all traffic out and only traffic on that specific port in, yup.

Under Global Rules I have the default rules & I am running Internet Security Mode, no other rules.

When p2p rule is on the top or just above the block, p2p works here.

Why you say to move the rule below the block rule when not using torrent?

Are you using Torrent clients default settings for speed or you have optimized the speed?

In UTorrent, there is a setup option which checks & set ups the client for better speed, should I run it or just use the client as it is?

All the other options at defaults are fine or should I change any?

Because that port will now be open when the rule is above the block rule, well perhaps it’s not necessary if you’re behind a router with a firewall as long as you haven’t forwarded ports in that.

Not really, I’ve left Tixati at pretty much default when it comes to connections and that stuff.

I’ve never used the setup option so I can’t say. Never really looked into the other options of µTorrent.
