cavwp.exe causing high CPU load, sometimes

Hi

This was happening again with RC v7 , created a bug report for this in beta section

Thank you. I’ll take a look at your bug report.

Chiron, I created a full dump using killswitch a few days ago when the CPU usage was high, and again last night as it behaved similarly. I’ll put together a report later and link for you to check over.

Noted, but I’ll see if the bug report reveals anything first before I change any settings. It just seems to me that within the past month, systems with 6.3 installed, the cavwp.exe runs high when a browser is active, and systems with 5.2 installed, the cmdagent.exe runs high when a browser is active…

Thank you.

I sent you a dmp file via pm. Let me know if you need any more info.

Please let me know what steps you are able to follow in order to reproduce this?

Thanks.

I had the same problem for ages with cavwp hogging my CPU and coupled with that was an issue that the Settings dialog would take about 30 to 90 seconds to close, for instance when adding a blocked exe to the Trusted list or even after a simple Settings edit.

Disabling ‘Scanning Optimisations’ has fixed all this for me.

If you don’t mind, please create a bug report for this.

Thanks.

Chiron, that Sunday night, I simply started the system from hibernate mode, then opened a browser. This is when I observed the high usage and created the dmp.

At the time when it’s happening create a Full Dump using KillSwitch. That should give you enough information to file a bug report.

Thanks.

It flared up on me again tonight. Disabling cache builder did not fix it. This is an actual scan that I can pull up in task manager, and it shows the files being scanned. Everything is disabled, this should not be happening. This eats up about 50% cpu and bogs down the whole system

I got a killswitch dump of it. I’ll PM the link to Chiron.

Also, killing this task via the stop button took like 30 seconds. It did not want to stop.

What did it scan?

I have received your PM. Thank you for that.

Please now make a bug report for it in this section of the forum. Be sure to use the format given in this post. Just copy and paste the code. Then replace the question marks with your responses. It’s really not as scary as it looks. It’s actually quite simple once you start using it.

Thanks.

The same things were happening to me regarding the spikes in CPU. In my case, the AV is turned on.

I installed the new version recently as I had an older version installed and wasn’t aware of the new one until I installed it on a friend’s computer. I too recently discovered the cavwp.exe problem and tried turning off the cache builder as instructed. The random spiking appears to have ended.

The problem later returned, but this time after starting my computer. That’s when I discovered that the AV was set to “On Access” instead of “Stateful”, by default. Switching to Stateful calmed my computer down for the most part. On Access made it go nuts and shutdown.

Now today again cavwp.exe went berserk. It happened once again after starting my computer. I usually give Comodo time to do its updates, otherwise it interferes and makes everything run like molasses. When I thought it was done, I tried using the internet and found it still bogged down.

I checked the task manager and found that it was apparently still doing an update. A second cavwp.exe process was running and running and running. It continued to run while I tried to come on here earlier to find a solution, but it just hogged all the CPU til the internet was a lost cause. I had to go in and manually kill all the dragon.exe processes to close Dragon.

I opened Comodo and checked the update progress and it was stalled at 90%. Stopping, Pausing, and resuming the update did nothing. I tried closing the cavwp.exe process, but it said “Access Denied”. In the end, I had to go into Comodo and set everything to disabled. This must have unlocked the cavwp.exe process, because when I tried killing it again, it finally closed.

Almost immediately after closing the process, the update window changed to complete and the update was done.

I tried to replicate it by forcing an update. Once again a second cavwp.exe process appeared. It took the CPU up to 97% and cycled up to well over 300,000 k before it settled down to around over 160,000 k. Then it dropped down much lower before a third cavwp.exe process appeared. The update took more than 15 minutes to complete and then it finally went back down to one cavwp.exe process after about 17 minutes.

I don’t know what’s going on here. Cloud Rating is enabled. I have noticed that if you turn on “memory scan at start” and turn off “scanning optimizations”, they come back after you disable and then re-enable everything.

On what hardware are you? On older or less powerful hardware updating can be taxing. On my Assus EEE Netbook it can take up to 8 minutes.

I got this computer from someone else. I can’t afford anything newer.

The specs in the system say the following:

Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Version Service Pack 3

Hewlitt-Packard Pavilion
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4
CPU 2.40GHz
2.39GHz, 0.99GB of RAM

In your case I would suggest to use another lighter AV. You can choose to disable the Real Time Protection of CIS or uninstall the AV part.

I think Avast might be a better choice. When using Avast you will also get a behaviour blocker. With the CIS BB you will then have two BBs running at the same time. We don’t recommend to run two security solutions of the same kind at the same time. You would have to disable either one of them.

Are there any people using Avast or other AV on an older system?

And before I forget. As always make sure there are no leftovers of security programs you had installed in the past. A possible left over can cause all sort of “strange effects”. Please run clean up tools for all security programs you had in the past. A list can be found here at the Eset website: ESET Knowledgebase .

OK, so I have had the same issue for a long time. (6 months, probably more) Keep checking to see if it has been fixed.
The usual…

[ol]- Seemingly random startup of cavwp.exe (sometimes multiple instances)

  • max cpu spike on a single hyperthread/core (for a long period of time)
  • ram getting used at 200-300 mb average
  • virtual ram getting used at 200 mb average (sometimes as high as 600mb)
  • cavwp.exe remaining idle at other times at 0cpu / 6mb ram / 48mb V-ram[/ol]

Have tried all the “fixes” here. They do not work.
It is not cache builder or the [disable cache builder] button does not work.

The hardware I am having the issue with is … p4 /1GBram / winXP.
The issue would still be there if I was using different, updated hardware but it would just be less noticeable (i assume). As is, it is very noticeable. Even with cavwp.exe using just 200mb of ram, my browser more or less freezes, sometimes literally freezes until I kill cavwp.exe. I have my task manager open all the time, idling there for when cavwp.exe pops up. It’s as if cavwp.exe gets special “FU treatment” , it’s more important than your browser so

“FU browser” ,
“you wait until I’m done doing something that even people on the forum don’t know what it is”

I am a system process and NO ONE knows what I do

I hate to say this… but in the absence of ANY clear explanation for over a year, about cavwp.exe’s dodgy running patterns. I am left with one thought. Is cavwp.exe a NSA backdoor? I am not saying it is, but it would explain the complete lack of transparency and be an explanation of why cavwp.exe is seemingly being brushed under the carpet. As you can see… “creating trust online” has gotten harder to do since, you know… Snowden. So don’t shoot me for the sentiment, I am not the only one thinking it nowadays.
Trust of “security companies” is now getting questioned. I appologize if it offends but if I’m saying it… how many are thinking it.

Removed superfluous space. Eric

After persevering with CIS for several years, I eventually came to the conclusion that it has become unsuitable for older PC’s (I run XP SP3 on a 2.8GHz P4 PC with 1.5Gb memory).

So, about two months ago I tried several other free products also, but they all slowed down my PC to an unacceptable level (especially when booting my PC and when the products were updating),

Eventually I came across and installed Privatefirewall. Since then my time to boot to Dragon has reduced from between 4-6 minutes to a regular 2.8 minutes, with no hang ups during sessions.

As its name suggests, Private firewall has a firewall (with top-rated leak defense - but it also includes zero-hour malware protection, behavioral hacker protection, system anomaly detection and an anti-logger (amonst other things).

Give it a try and see how you get on. (If you wondered, I have no professional connection to the owners of Privatefirewall.)

Hi !

I got the same problem with high CPU-load on CIS 6.3, caused by cmdagent.exe that uses 25% CPU.
I have created a new thread here: https://forums.comodo.com/firewall-help-cis/high-cpu-load-caused-by-cmdagentexe-in-cis-63-t103072.0.html
So anyone having the same problem, please post there.
Together we might be able to find the cause.
I have had “Resource Monitor” running and I have made some interesting observations…
