Avira [Discussion]

Well, as for me, I will get CIS once it gets out. Why? Well there's two parts to that answer. One is I have faith in Comodo and they have provided us with an awesome firewall in CFP 3.0. I think CAVS 3 will rise to the same level of quality that CFP 3.0 has. Second, I want to help even in a small way, if I can find bugs I'll report them.

When you think about it, there is no such thing as the perfect anti-virus or perfect security software. I used AVG 7.5 before and while it was good it has failed to detect some nasties for me in the past. Same with Avira Free, it doesn't detect everything out there. The detection rate of various anti-virus software is only valid for the test sample used. How many more viruses are out there in the wild going undetected? So why not go with the proven ones (anti-virus)? It's all a matter of choice. I think COMODO has proven that they are dedicated to making quality software and I will be supporting them by using CAVS3 even in its initial stages.

Your supporting CAV cause your a modder but CAV will never be able to beat Avira,KAV,NOD32 or Avast. - Never ? Wayzat ? ;D I do believe, that COMODO will reach there level and quite quickly. Better ? Dunno. But the resourse usage looks very promising.

Also how is Avast bloated? Its FREE and you have the option not to install certain items. - True. Avast takes 60-70 mb if you install everything. COMODO’s firewall takes more than 50 MB (of course you can delete what’s inside the Repair folder and have it cut off to 30, but still, it’s only a firewall part. I wonder how much CIS will take ? 88)

Anyway, Avast and COMODO are the only two, that provide users with uncrippled AV’s that have included spyware protection, webshield and stuff that only paid versions of other products have

ehmm coughaviracough 88)

errr i read Xan’s post that CIS actually uses RAM less than CFP3 88) !ot!
not sure about resource use, but my comp is a little bit faster when i was using avira than avast.

Avira Free doesn’t include spyware protection :frowning:

About the resourse usage of CIS - Josh posted a screenshot here - https://forums.comodo.com/feedbackcommentsannouncementsnews_about_cavs/comodo_internet_security_screen_shots_cis_info-t26805.30.html (Reply 35)

Avira Free and Avira Premium are different. I am using Avira Premium. It runs 6 processes actually. 4 more then KAV or NOD32. But yet its lighter then both. I used it in the past and was always happy but the umbrella issue was getting to me. I recently switched back. All 6 processes only use 16,000 - 20,000 K. My boot up is extremely quick. A good 10-15 secs quicker then with NOD32 or KAV.

yeah, that’s why i switch to avast :-
i know using separate AV & AS would be better, but i’m not wasting my time updating & scanning my comp with 2 anti malwares 88) and beside that will beat the purpose of using avira in the first place, having realtime AV & AS would take more resource. :-\

Your right there ganda  Avira Premium would be fine though, But yeah… If you used a seperate AS you would loose the purpose. Ganda, why are you using avast! when you could use CIS?? :o :o

$$$$$$ come on now. $20 is not alot of money for one of the best av’s out there. I spend $40 every 3 days on gas alone. KAV and NOD32 are both more expensive and do not have the same detection rates.

well, cos i’m cheap (:TNG)

It’s not 20 $, it’s 20 euros  (5 of them goes to Auerbach foundation)

While you’re quite correct that CFP3 is an awesome product NOW it took some time and annoying bugs to get where it is today.I’m confident that CIS will attain a similar status but there’ll be a few bumps in the road beforehand.Personally in the early stages I’ll run CIS on a VM in order to provide feedback since I admire the goals Comodo are aiming for,but I’d be reluctant to use it on my “real” system until it’s more mature. I agree. For the cost Avira Premium represents great value for money. There are far inferior products on the market cough N…retailing for significantly more ££

Regarding the closed Avira umbrella: When I read about it in their forums that doesn’t automatically mean that you are unprotected. The umbrella stays also closed if (TCP) connection to the engine backend cannot be established. So if you configured your firewall to block that connection the umbrella will stay closed.

I use Antivir Free for years and love it for its high detection rate and being lightweight on ressources.

You’re quite right there, sometimes the AV would be fully protecting the system even with the brolly closed. It was more of an annoyance really since you needed to keep checking this was the case and it wasn’t disabled.

Listen people. Read my previous replies in this thread. Avira is not being blocked by Comodo weaker. I think I know that by now after years. The umbrella doesn’t open about every 5-6th boot up. I already said this. Its not all the time. There are several threads about it in the Avira forums. ITS AN AVIRA bug. I have uninstalled Comodo and Sandboxie. Shut off any other auto starts. STILL HAPPENS. This was previous version 8 builds. The latest build (8.1.0.367) seems to have fixed the issue. It happened once to me since my recent install of Avira. I dumped NOD32 and went back to Avira which I have used in about 6 months or so. The umbrella tray icon says proection is stopped but the main GUI says its on. People with Comodo and Sandboxie have this problem. People with other various security set ups have this problem. If you want I can link about 12 -15 threads with the same problem.

I was just agreeing about the closed umbrella not necessarily meaning that the Avira Guard wasn’t fully functioning,it was a bug in Avira that’s been addressed now.

I know you know but this was pointed at others. Thanks. :BNC :■■■■

And I just wanted to put that information into that thread because many people don’t know that - it wasn’t meant specifically for you Vet.
