Off course.
Be sure to mention safe mode as well.

ok. i was thinking about replacing avast for avira free as an on demand scanner once CIS comes out b/c avast is more of a resident scanner than on demand. i have one question. it says the free version doesn’t have “AntiSpyware protection from spyware and adware”.
why would they make the free version w/o this? does this mean that there are no antispyware/adware signatures in the database or is this a different type of protection/scanner in the PE and suite. if it doesn’t have any spyware protection, would SAS and MBAM be enough?

The reason they offer no spyware signatures in the free version is commercial, they want to differentiate between the free and paid versions. While SAS and MBAM will likely be enough spyware protection, the free versions of both of these are only on demand scanners and therefore offer no real-time protection. If you want this for free, your best bets would be Spyware Terminator or Threatfire in my opinion. You could also use Comodo BOclean but it is a bit heavy on resources.Keep SAS and MBAM for periodic scanning though as no single product offers 100% detection.
alright. thanks. ![]()
I agree - MBAM & SAS would is outstanding with any AV, Including Avira.
Josh
That’s strange,I ran both of those together without any issues.I decided to do without BOclean because I figured that the Webguard component of Avira does a similar job albeit by different means.I recently switched from Threatfire to A-squared anti-malware v4 (potentially awesome software) which includes the Mamutu behavioural scanner .
ehm
just fyi & wanting to add more postcount. 88)
sometimes avira umbrella won’t open on start up. not just the umbrella, the realtime protection is really not running
on my XP SP2 machine. i need to activate it manually (:NRD)
Vett had the same problem :-\ I thought Avira has fixed that ??? 88)
vette switched to NIS 2009 i think. hmm, i use avira along with CFP3 + SAS & MBAM (on demand)
Confirmed.
A-Squared anti malware on a free 12 month promotion (:WIN) Avira Premium bought but worth every penny.
Hi guys. I’m a bit dissapointed with Avira Free now. :-\ What happened ? Well my GF’s sisters PC was infected so I installed Avira Free and it detected some form of Virut virus which had the cfmon file infected. Avira couldn’t remove the virus, coudn’t quarantine it. It coudn’t ignore it either - kept poping up constantly . So I booted up to safe mode and tried to launch Avira from there. NO GO ! Avira got toast ! I tried to uninstall it then. Coudn’t - the uninstaller showed a message that “The uninstaller was modified, probably due to a virus ! Would you like to quit uninstallation process ?” Next time I booted up to normal mode - BSOD ! And that’s it. Of course I would have removed the virus with some other tool or with a bootable CD, but there weren’t enough time to play with that PC.
So Avira’s self defense didn’t pass this test :-\
That’s what I always said before. Avira’s detection may be great, but it’s cure/deletion is nothing worth.
Have you tried running ashampoo antivirus or antispyware ;D
>:-D?

Most AVs are better at preventing threats rather than removal.Tools such as MBAM and SAS excel at removal.
@Commodus: Do you think that a different AV would have succeeded in that case? Did you test it? Consider that before you start bashing ![]()
Comm says the same thing about every av except KAV.
Hey, I’m not bashing it ;D The opposite. I really like Avira and use it a lot when it comes to cleaning or preventing the malware from infesting in the first place. I always install Avira or Avast on customer PC’s and never heard of any complains. That’s why I’m a bit dissapointed that Avira got killed. I rarely see that ![]()
Respect to Avira Team ! :■■■■
Yeah. I’m the KAV fanboy. Don’t make me laugh. Read my post first.
Personally I’d always recommend installing an AV on a clean system rather than infected, the same for any real-time Anti-Malware/Security progs. All manner of system files might have been compromised that may affect the overall security. There are portable versions of AV scanners, alongside other AM tools, which are best used in a clean up capacity.(Including AVZ Toolkit for Commodus with the Kaspersky engine) ![]()
+1. Looks like people who even earn their living cleaning PCs try and install the AV on the infected machine, they even get surprised when the installation fails. That doesn’t make sense to me. If it works, fine, but what if it doesn’t? Do they admit defeat, even though the system could have been cleaned with a program that doesn’t need to be installed on the disc and OS that are swarming with nasties and rootkits? ???
