White listing Games

Steam also has over 10000 games, so when we talk here about whitelistning some games, look at Steam first…
and then report back with follow games that should be whitelisted. ;D :-La

Note that Steam releases have Steam-specific executables–a manual whitelisting for the Steam release of a game won’t match its retail release and vice versa even if both have the same version number. The same goes for other digital distribution services. Several of the the big publishers have started signing their games these days, so that’s another possibility of course.

I’m looking forward to more of my favourite games being recognised by CIS.

Thank god also CIS v5 has a game mode.

Comodo do not protect against type of overflow. if somes peoples know what i mean :
it creates so much packets sent into the games, and the games crash instantly … comodo or not … u have the loses  and sandboxing lets kill the game more fasters = lower lag.

Which has yet to be proven as sufficient.

There are other issues that need to be resolved as well that have existed since the release of v3.14. Prior to 3.14, I was able to add Blizzard Entertainment to the trusted vendors list and the two main files of World of Warcraft, launcher.exe and wow.exe, to my trusted files. Starting with 3.14 and continuing to this day, I can’t do this. Trying to add Blizzard to trusted vendors by reading the executable does not work and claims that the files are not valid signed executables. The strange thing is that if I copy the files from the World of Warcraft folder to My Documents, then I can use them to add Blizzard to Trusted Vendors. It’s like CIS has blacklisted the entire World of Warcraft folder or something. Another issue since 3.14 is that the two files, launcher.exe and wow.exe ,will show up as being invalid when you click on purge in both the firewall and D+ rules tabs. If you delete the rules and let CIS make new ones, they will once again show as invalid when you click on purge.

World of Warcraft is unique in that you can copy it’s entire folder to a backup destination and then use that backup to install the game and have it work flawlessly. All you have to do is copy the folder to Program Files (or anyplace else actually) and then manually create a shortcut to the launcher. You don’t have to use the installation disks at all. Many people have taken advantage of this when they have to reformat their machines or even to install their copy to another machine without having to go through the lengthy process of using the installation discs and then going through the process of receiving and applying the updates. I know of no other game where this is possible.

Being safer than a browser is little comfort. Besides, browsers and emails are NOT given unfettered unlimited privileges. A game mode no doubt calls for security compromises, but sandboxie and virtualization can be designed to eliminate some of the risk. Whitelisting is an extreme measure for games, precisely because of the patching and file writes you describe. If a game contains any exploit it would be extremely dangerous.

That no one has issued a security patch is not evidence one is not needed. Nor is absence of reports of infection via games. If people had been infected by game behavior, exactly how would they know that was the source of infection?

i hope they will whitelist steam, and any game we reported (autoamtically throu the unknown file warning) in the next days/weeks so we can play and dosent need to bother with “ok” pressing and so one.

Please allow game devs

OK. But whitelisting potentially dangerous apps for convenience destroys the credibility of software. If a user wants to add a game as trusted that is his decision. Asking Comodo to make a blanket approval to a vendor or even to a particular game puts Comodo on the line as certifying safety of the app. VERY few apps deserve this. NONE deserve it unless they meet the standards other apps meet for reliability. Convenience cannot be the sole criterion.

A game mode is defensible, but then Comodo should issue a warning each time game mode is invoked. That’s honesty and integrity. Security is NOT about being user friendly. If default deny is the theory (a good one) then allowing on user request creates a lowest common denominator standard. That defeats the purpose.

Maybe Comodo should try a partnership with raptr…

Raptr, like Xfire, is a program which tracks your gaming activity and stores this information online. It detects when you start a game, and which game it is.
