Microsoft.NET problems in installation - went through with it anyway

When I installed Comodo firewall on my recently upgraded laptop (to Windows 7), there was an alert message in the installation popping up about Microsoft.Net Client 4 profile. I don’t remember what it said exactly, just that it had something to do with changes and uninstalling. There wasn’t an option to cancel it - I clicked X and the alert message that came next was about a file in C:/ that could not be read, and would I verify that the file existed. I clicked OK to get rid of it to open Windows Explorer, and clicked several more alert messages that appeared. The installation continued, to my surprise, with one last alert message that said I wasn’t going to be able to return to previous settings once I clicked OK.

Sorry for being a dunce, but any idea what had just happened? I had used Comodo in XP before, and I’ve never had this problem.

Curious. It’s a shame you don’t have a little more information :frowning: CIS is not dependant on .NET 4 and will install and run either with or without.

Maybe you could check the Windows event logs. Open the start menu and type eventvwr.msc Take a look at the system and application logs, see if there are any warnings or errors related to either CIS or .NET 4

Yup, there were:

I’m not completely familiar with the error codes, perhaps one of the Moderators can provide a little more information. However, looking at the information, it suggests something might have gone awry with the .NET4 installation and this in turn, caused problems when you tried to install CIS.

The config.msi file is a transient file, which usually contains backups of files that are being installed or updated during a program installation, although it’s unclear why the file wasn’t found, I’d guess it has something to do with the failed installation of .NET4.

What’s the current status of the installation? It’s probably worth running a diagnostic check on CIS, assuming it’s installed. Go to the ‘More’ tab and select Diagnostics.

It’s installed, along with Microsoft.NET. No problems, according to diagnostics.

It would seem everything is ok, but I’d keep an eye on things. Diagnostics should report any anomalies. Sorry I can’t tell you more about the errors or suggest a reason for what happened.

Oh, no problem. Will keep an eye out for problems. Would it be better if I leave it as is, though, or if I reinstall it?

If it were me, I’d reinstall both .NET4 and CIS, making sure I’d removed all remnants of the previous installations. But if it seems to be working ok…

Okay, that’s good to hear. But in case something happens in the future…is .NET4 a freeware? I don’t have the installer… :frowning:

The log you show is that an installation of DotNet 4is suspended. The MSI installer is sensitive to those kind of things.

To reinstall DotNet 4 use the Windows Update or get it from Filehippo for example: Download Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8.1 for Windows - Filehippo.com . After you ran the installer found at Filehippo go to the Windows Update and get all the subsequent updates of DotNet 4.

Let us know how things go.

Thanks.

Do I uninstall Comodo before I reinstall .Net?

If CIS did install despite that message then I see no reason to uninstall it.

To be sure the installation went well run Diagnostic from the CIS user interface. It can be found under More.

No problem according to Diagnostics. Thanks.

Is there a 32-bit version?

The .NET 4 framework is both x86 and x64. CIS can be found Firewall Download | Best Firewall Security software for Windows just select whichever options are applicable.

I reinstalled .NET (uninstalled .NET extended before .NET, restarted the PC, reinstalled .NET, disconnected myself from my wireless connection during installation then reconnected when the message saying the installation has been finished appeared, in case that’s going to be important), went to Windows Update and downloaded the .NET update that’s already been listed, along with Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (should I download that, by the way? I have an antivirus already). Went to Comodo diagnostics and didn’t get any error reports.

Is there anything I should check?

I don’t think there’s a great deal you can do in addition. just keep an eye on things. Run diags for the next few days and check the firewall/D+ logs. Also keep an eye on the Windows event logs.

I believe you’ll be fine, but it never hurts to check occasionally.

Sure, thanks.

Uh, I’m not sure where the firewall and Defense plus logs are…

The firewall logs are in View Firewall Events and the D+ logs are in View Defense + Events.

The installation of CIS seemed to have worked and the DotNet installation is fixed now.

I think you will be fine. Just check Diagnostics the upcoming days but I doubt it will report a problem.

I checked around the Windows logs and found these (I uninstalled .NET, then reinstalled it twice, which may account for the number of error logs related to it; I put in some other logs I thought might be related, whether directly or indirectly, just in case):
