I am lost with CIS and the whole OS thing

update

I tried to download again, but same error message.
It seems to never complete file download from internet at every attempt.
It shows 2 hours to complete download, then after 15 minutes, it stops.
Yet the install window appears, and press Instal…, again same error message.

Can CIS be posted out by snail-mail , obviously the internet is not working !

Can you downloading the free version and see if that installer works or gives the same error? Get it from http://download.comodo.com/cis/download/installs/4020/standalone/cispremium_installer.exe .

At first there was hope, the download did not stop well into the 115 + Mbs, then “unknown network error”, I could not even reboot the modem for a few hours.

After a few more hours, rebooted modem, back online and tried again.
This second attempt got me the same as before, Non7z Archive.

I will try a internet cafe, we are having “issues” with the internet in general over the old copper lines and optic fibre where I’m at.
My area is on copper wire phone lines still, and this is the “pass the buck” excuse from ISP support when I rang them last time over a slow internet speed issue, it’s never their fault, it’s my phone lines, or the exchange, add a list of excuses.

What might help is, ( an idea ) if the installer had a “resume function” added, so if the download stops for whatever reason, the next attempt it resumes from where it left off rather than begin the whole download process from scratch.

The other machine I can try to download is a PC with Linux Mint OS,then transfer the file onto USB stick, then to XP pc, but I am new on that OS and could not find where the download folder is or what it’s called. ( It has CIS for Linux, no problem with it.) The downtime is now very much overtime, beyond making any sense now.

I am sorry to hear your internet connection is giving you so much problems. I hope you can successfully download CIS at the internet cafe or other place. The installer does not download the files. The Comodo servers support resuming so you could try a download manager to try to download the installer from your home (assuming you are not on a tight data limit).

(assuming you are not on a tight data limit).
No, there is plenty, 100 Gigs per month plan.

Is why I went back online via ISP, before it was USB Stick Pre-Pay on 4G network, but over priced,
$50.00 for 5 gigs, ridiculous pricing,
yet speed wise and reliability it never failed, as long as it is 4G.

The Comodo servers support resuming so you could try a download manager

I’ll look for one, if there is a recommended DLM by all means let me know.

Thanks

I haven’t used one in ages. Anybody?

Ok, some progress.

First,
I downloaded and installed DAM ( Download Acceleration Manager)
It has the important “Resume” function.

Pasted your link and started the download, everything looked OK.
Then, at precisely the same time, after 30 minutes it all stopped, my internet cut out again !
I do have a background in motor mechanics, I do understand that there is copper and there is copper.
I was thinking maybe the cheap quality copper is being used, on the telephone lines.
But then, why 30 minutes ?
Heat, came to mind.
Where is the heat ?

Modem, obviously, and cheap Modem supplied by the ISP may I add.

So, I placed my lunch box ice pack out of the fridge under the modem, and voila, the speed and everything else increased, the drop outs stopped and the number on the DAM appeared as if it was running on steroids.
This is in parallel similarity when swaping spark plug leads of cheap copper to quality copper spark plug leads even on you lawn mower and most 2-stroke house hold items, and cars back in the old days,
( 1970’s)

The download completed, but it was not a exe file.
DAM shows 100% complete

File Size:215.223 Received:215.223 ( 100%)

I have uploaded a screen print in zip

So we have the drop out sorted, use a lunch box ice pack, placed underneath the Modem.

I’ll try one more time, with ice pack from beginning to end.

Update

The download was completed, and file name had to be changed from .tmp to .exe
Then it all worked, started to install etc etc

Now it has to update virus database, this seems to be taking a while to, but at least something succeeded.
I did ring the ISP to provide some feedback and it does show on their screen many drop-outs.
Told them the Modem they supplied needs an ice-pack to make it work, and I got all the usual reply and some safety precautions with dampness etc etc.

This screenshot shows the elapsed time to download initial virus updates, seem this will take a while to,
more ice packs !

This is going to take time to fully install signatures.

The update commences, then tries to install signatures, and the error it seems, cis “thinks” enough time has passed, and tries to install, yet it errors.
When I click on update again, it clearly shows the update download had not completed.

I have uploaded 2 screen shots, 1st one is the error, and the 2nd screen shot is the resumption of signature update.
Note the computer clock time, this has been now almost 24 hours to solve this glitch.
But getting there.

Need to view both screen shot 12 and 13

Back to square 1

Has been downloading signatures most of the day, then stops, tries to install and errors.
Resume CIS download, starts for a while, then the same, and and on.

Have re-booted, have done lots of things, but it just won’t fully complete signature update after initial install.

Is it the OS, un-supported XP ?

I like your engineering approach to this. Apparently the modem is causing a lot of issues your connection. Thinking along further towards cooling. Often modems have holes in the bottom plate. How about putting the modem up from the surface using things as stand offs and then put a fan in its vicinity. That being said the ISP should provide a solution as something is definitely up with your modem.

As a workaround you can try the following. Download the latest full database from this page using the download manager or from another location and import as instructed. You will then have a limited number of incremental updates to download with less chances of a failure.

Before doing the above delete the content of the cache folder of the AV updater: c:\ProgramData\Comodo\Cis\wpTemp. It will delete all downloaded .cav files; one or more of them may have gotten corrupted due to problems with the download. The ProgramData folder is hidden by default and you need to make it visible in Control Panel → Folder Options settings.

Thanks Eric,

Thanks for all the support.

How is your modem doing? Can it get cooled enough?

How is your modem doing? Can it get cooled enough?
Since finishing the downloads and installs, seems all back to normal, has not dropped out or disconnected at idle.

However
I typed in search “Netcom Modem overheating”
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1875312

Mixed reviews of that same brand and others.
I think some common sense and not to take too much for granted.
It was not my choice of modem when I signed up with the ISP, but seeing it was included in the package and “free”, why not.

Looking at the structure of the modem, it is flimsy and cheap.
Many electronics these days “retire early” due to a fade in what’s right at the design and manufacture. Even a simple USB adapter that goes into a car’s cig lighter socket, I’ve had 2 so far, simply fizzled after a few weeks of normal use.
I actually did open up the USB adapter to see what happened.
And it seems to be around the same spot [at] or near a black looking transistor and circuit board section, splattered.
Made in ?? $64 if you guess the right answer.

If I had my choice of Modem, it be at the higher range
Some thing like;
https://www.clearos.com/products/clearos-editions/clearos-7-home#protection
But their price is way over the top, over priced.
So a Billion Modem may have to do.
--------,
Ventilation of a Modem/Router and temperature checks may be one of the first boxes to tick when things get slow, and try an ice pack, be sure to enclose the ice pack in dry plastic lunch bag to avoid dampness seeping up the device.

Sometimes things are in the hardware and not in the software.

I don’t think wrapping the ice pack will keep it from producing condensation. The cold surface will then be the surface of the lunch bag. Speaking technically. May be the modem could do with a slightly bigger heatsink and Arctic Silver thermal compound.

Yep, I’m on to it as this guy has done some extreme modifications

http://dandollinger.com/index.php/2011-11-20-20-47-04/3-overheating-router-fix

But, as mentioned it ( Modem) came with the ISP deal, it’s light as a feather so I don’t think there is much inside as far heat sinks are concerned.

The modem is no longer sitting flat, I got out of the kitchen utensils one of those long retangle cheese graters 88), the Modem sits on top of it.
This is the “hole and wind tunnel” method, while the ice pack is back in the fridge getting frozen again.

Seriously, I will persevere, and in good time buy a new Billion Modem,( The ISP has them but also puts on a mark up on price.
Had one before and never gave me any problems.

Ideally I want to play around with Linux Smoothwall, but their support is not for me, too techie to learn from, they don’t seem to want to help newbies, except refer to quoting “RTFM”.
It’s not the manuals, it how it’s written, very difficult to visualize unless one has actually done the practice, but to do the practice, one has to understand the FManual, and around and around it goes, more downtime and my stuff never gets done.

Wow, that is taking it to the extreme but I’m impressed and got a smile on my face when I saw it…

That’s a great low cost solution.

I hear you. That is the type of techies that I DON’T like. The ones that speak in codes. Note; I could have been an engineer and spent two successful years studying Electronics at bachelor level in my prime years. I am by no means challenged but people speaking only in specialist lingo are the pits… :-X

Final Update.

about a week or so ago it all happened again, very slow computing in regards to the internet.
ISP could not figure it out unless I had my physical telephone lines checked on my side.
Then, all of a sudden it happened. Total Power blackout in the suburb and surrounding suburb due to main power line breakdown.
I thought the worst, no electricity, no TV, and no internet.
The power came back on, but the telephones were out.
Rang ISP and they went through the same process, check this and check that.
Fortunately a friend who heard my story is an electrician with telephone line permit.
He came and checked the lines, owe a favor.
My lines when checked were 100% OK

So the ISP got another call and they booked the Telco, they came 5 days later.

So 5 whole days, no internet and no telephone.

The problem was found, I hope once and for all.

Some connections down the street was corroded and moisture had got inside a main telephone terminal, on my line only !

Fixed in 45 minutes and now all back and running, much much faster to I may add.

Re-install CIS, the download, installation etc etc was all done in less than 20 minutes.

The modem boots and connects in 1/3 time less than before, instantly.
My web queries are timed, it used to be 20 seconds per Loop in Excel, it is now back to 8 seconds.

This seems normal.
