any of those COMs actually important to me on a Media Center PC? 88)
Disable them and see if you can survive without them. Trying is the way to success (and possible a few BSOD and/or reinstalls).
yeah I disabled one of em (still @ 6 SVchosts even after stopping the service :P) and Yeah I agree with ya Rag about the try it and learn from it. hands on experience is great :-TU I am still sorta worried about actually messing up my windows too much only because I have yet to nlite an OS and I hate the 4-8 hours of wasted time installing the OS and stuff again. Anyways back On topic I have just got rid of all my Microsoft update uninstaller and freed up I think about 210 MB total.
One svchost.exe is often responsible for multiple services.
It’s the best way. No one else can answer if your PC will work or not without a component, as we all have different set-ups of software.
Wow, that’s nice. Keep going!
Don’t you mean the opposite?
Go Goose!

Words like “Media” and “Center” and “Security Center” remind me of this evil.
You should consider getting regular XP Home/Pro. I forgot what your version has extra over the standard ones. Refresh my mind here, then we’ll go from there.
Well, Media Center is newer XP so it’s supposedly “safer” and better for watching videos live TV etc,etc I do none of that besides and occasional DVD in WMP11 so really the way I use XP MCE is just like XP Home/Pro I use absolutely nothing regarding the “media center” addition. So yes perhaps trying to find XP Pro would be good but as Microsoft is ran by vista lovers they killed off XP from the stores like local comp. shops don’t carry it anymore either >:(
That makes eaiser. In that case, have a sample of mine and you’ll get an idea of some of the services that can be disabled and/or deleted.

Problems being solved for years now.
Cheers at the archaic nLite section out there.

You might want to re-enable the standard buttons & address bar by right-clicking the menu bar and toggle it on.

How to remove ram usage on explorer.exe:
http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.php?s=d8a5d48e3f8c59a030eab5a36dc6c05c&showtopic=1972
The others I already tried and they worked. I haven’t this one, but it looks interesting :-TU ;D
Update: It backfired >:(. In 2 areas (:AGY): 1) mem usage jumped up a bit and 2) a lot of the icons defaulted to one of the basic Windows ones. A reboot wasn’t necessary - just needed to restart explorer.exe in Task Manager.
I was looking a little in this thread:
http://www.bold-fortune.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3641
They’ve come far in terms of Windows folder sizes. I won’t go that far, I don’t have the desire. Another thing: one post claims that ntuser.dat probably won’t get smaller than 1.2 MB. Mine is 768 KB. ;D
LA
Mine’s 216 KB, but that’s besides the point :o (the one belonging to NetworkService account/profile)
3584 KB is mine :-TD. What did you eat out of the registry to make it that small? NTRegOpt every day?
I was also looking deeper into other tweaks that didn’t technically involve deleting things, but speeding up the processor (like this), which is more interesting because of direct performance from BF forum. Not sure if I feel the miracle, but it doesn’t hurt according to the myths section of this site. Furthermore, I defragged with JK last night (fully defragged this time, in the sense that I waited until the end of Zone 3: Optimizing Files) and then again in Safe Mode. The result: I think the Windows logo that goes across the screen at boot time only went through 3 times :o. That’s fast. I haven’t seen it that fast since the first few boots right after a reformat.
Exactly what i was thinking, mine is 3584 KB to What can be done to shrink it?
I’ve no idea why my file is that small, neither do I know what it really means. Is it related to the registry? My registry is very small: software is 5.8 MB, system is 2.56 MB.
Windows logo across the screen? I don’t know anything about that since I enabled NOGUIBOOT.
LA
My NTUSER.DAT is 512 kB. 104 kB for NetworkService. But my registry is only around 7.5 MB.
WINDOWS-folder is at 221 MB with 1,293 files and 58 folders. Nothing excluded.
This thread is becoming almost as large as one third of Ganda’s big a$$ed thread ;D
software + system?
LA
Maybe because you two have Service Pack 3. I read that Bold Fortune was pleasantly shocked to notice that the overall disk usage has dropped compared to Service Pack 2.
I won’t speculate until we’ve clarified what actually affects the ntuser.dat file size… :THNK
