How to slim down and tweak (kill) your Windows XP installation

Maybe it’s the Comodo Registry Cleaner (:LOV)

NTRegOpt helped a teetsy bit. Can you guys do me a favour and export your HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry hive to like your desktop and tell me what the size is? Mine is 6.80 MB.

Remember, there are at least two NTUser.dat files:
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService
C:\Documents and Settings[i]

Mine is only 1.10 MB (size on disk).

Do you even eat? ;D That’s some diet there.

You wouldn’t happen to remember what it was before SP3, would you?

Whole the registry.

Mine is 608 kB (size on disk).

I do eat, but it seems like Rag doesn’t.

Sorry, I don’t remember.

LA does eat?

Wolpertinger Weissbeer is the only kind of real nutrition

I told him so some years ago, methinks.

Errm.

Maybe this software can be useful in order to discover what do delete and what to keep:

I haven’t tried it though. All my applications seem to work as expected anyway. :-TU

Seems like a good program. Might give try sometime.
Anyway, I removed some bloat from my PC today by cleaning it! Was a lot of dust in in! After cleaning my CPU temperature lowered by around 5°C!

Hi guys & gals.

I am a South African working in Nigeria…so keep your wallets and purses safe! (only kidding)

I stumbled on your forum posts while googling about nLite configurations.

Although i haven’t read all the post, I sure found them interesting, and very often very, very funny. I even called my wife so I could read some of it to her. She has sat with me over the last seven years patiently waiting while I nLited and reinstalled probably over a hundred different versions and incarnations (is that a real word?) of XP SP1 SP2 and SP3.

If this post is still active, reply me, and we can exchange some experiences with nLite.

I have not been after size so much, but rather to have the necessary add-ons and updates install with windoze to reduce the post-install process, and hopefully get better stability and speed.

Regards to all,

Wazzbler.

BTW, can the OP or a mod change the title to “How to slim down and tweak (kill) your Windows XP”? I think this topic is about that.

First of all, let me welcome you to the forum!

Secondly, let me also recommend the nLite thread we have. It’s pretty similar to this one, but obviously more focused on nLite.

Personally I’m not nLiting very often these days, but I’m sure there are interested users to discuss with you. At least I may post something, who knows.

I agree with you Jeremy, I should change the title. I chosed XP from the beginning but I never changed it to “OS”, someone else did that.

What you’re not into nliting anymore ??? When was the last time you reformated ? Yesterday ? 88)

Xan

Yep, it was yesterday, but I have no discs to burn right now. :-[

I’ll probably nLite within 30 days as I don’t want to activate the XP installation I currently use (it’s not nLited, thus it’s only a temporary installation).

you should disable any unneeded services to enhance security. ... Vulnerability: Any service or application is a potential point of attack. ... Countermeasure: Disable all unnecessary services.

Who says so? Microsoft does LOL:

But… ;D

Potential impact: If some services (such as the Security Accounts Manager) are disabled, you will not be able to restart the computer. If other critical services are disabled, the computer may not be able to authenticate with domain controllers. If you want to disable some system services, you should test the changed settings on non-production computers before you change them in a production environment.

Balance. (:AGL)

Anyway the link is an interesting resource, an explanation of each service and consequences of disabling them, :-TU by MS itself not third parties that may or may not know what they’re talking about.

So you need to disable the big service : Windows (:NRD)

“Now, first of all let me point you to the very guide that was the cause of this thread, in the first place: Slimming Down Windows XP by Bold Fortune (many, many thanks to you if you see this! ).”

I just bumped into this thread, LeoniAquila, and wanted to say hi, and tell you that I did see it…and you’re very welcome. I created the guide for you and others to enjoy.

Bold_Fortune

…Because bumping 2+ year old threads about an old OS to claim thanks of a old guide is a nice thing thing to do.
