How to slim down and tweak (kill) your Windows XP installation

Interesting tip, but exactly which are the benefits? E.g. installing/uninstalling programs, which may slow Windows down due to a bloated registry, won’t be different as they still have to write their stuff to the Windows registry. Also, they still have to put their stuff in the Application Data folders…

Speaking of the registry, I uninstalled Java which decreased the registry size from 9.3 MB to 8.9 MB!

With system32 I mean all files and sub-folders.

It depends on what files you delete. I could delete like 100 small files and maybe only decrease the size of WINDOWS by a few megabytes.
Any ways, my display drivers takes like 30+ MB, so that’s probably why mine’s larger, but with less files.

OK.

So what shall we do with this thread? I mean, it’s not really a useful guide “how to slim down XP”, since all info is spread out at 39 pages… can’t believe that this topic is #5 on the forums stats (number of replies). I guess we can let the topic live on, or slowly die out (:'() depending on the interest. At least I have no more tips to share. I’m not really interested in slimming down XP any further, enough is enough. It’s da*n small now, really stable and secure (at least with my personal setups and actions).

With the screen shots on the earlier pages I share what is necessary for my system to work. It’s not applicable to everyone, maybe you have programs I don’t have, maybe you have hardware I don’t have, etc.

It’s possible (no promises ;)) that I make a little summary of my down-slimming. Hopefully it’s interesting for some of you forum users, and guests.

It would intresting for me for sure

We’re not done yet. We’re yet to wipe WINDOWS so it gets under 200 MB!

Hm, I’m done, for now. 227 MB isn’t bad. But I won’t stop you from killing your XP.

Since the Bold Fortune guide describes very well what may be deleted, from a perspective of functionality, I won’t go through all that. What I do think is motivated to go through, is rather the whole process from bloat to slim: analyze your system, your needs, determine which stuff to delete, services to shut down etc. Furthermore, I can only write such a guide based on my own system and preferences. It’s not suitable for everyone. I’ll try to make clear which prerequisites the guide will be based on. :-TU

LA

I’m down at 233 MB now for whole the WINDOWS-folder. I could easily get under 200 MB if I uninstalled my graphic drivers, as they’re almost 40 MB.
We all have different needs, so that’s what limiting us from removing some items from WINDOWS.

I’ve made the guide, take a look at the first post in this thread. O0

Please, if you have any suggestions or comments, post them in this thread.

Nice walktrough ;D Really great guide L.A. :-TU I learned a few things, so thanks (bow) ;D

I’ll take a look at it later, too much to read :stuck_out_tongue:

As much as I may be hated, I couldn’t resist typing this: "Eww!

I recently discovered a tip with regards to uTorrent and shrinking the user profile a little: each time you have torrents in your download list, by default, a copy is stored in the C:\Documents and Settings<username>\Application Data\uTorrent. If you use skins like I do, it adds to the user profile size overall. A solution is to move all the files in this folder to the one the uTorrent executable is located (e.g. C:\Program Files\uTorrent). uTorrent scans its own folder first anyway for settings.dat. This is per the uTorrent manual and willl make it 100% portable ;D

Mine is now around 6.40 MB.

I also started deleting more useless fonts…down to 27 now. I referred to this guide.

So where have you been, Soya?

Soya, you couldn’t resist posting in this thread again, could you? ;D

Fonts are worth looking into, I still have 43 fonts.

At least my user profile is stable around 6.0 MB. :-TU

For your information, anything you add on the desktop will count towards the user profile…
Add a few films, and you’ll soon have a user file of many gigabytes.

I’ve now read through whole your guide, and it looks good :■■■■

In your face suckers ! ;D My Vista ISO size now is 398 MB  (It’s not a final size yet, I also lose the ability to use Windows Update, but I’ll better intergrate those updates with vLite, plus I think I’m smart :-[ (eXPerienced) enough to avoid those “remote attacker could take control over your PC” situations. Besides with that much of the components removed (Internet Explorer too) there’s nothing much to take control over ;D

Edit: The final size of the ISO is 420 MB with July 2008 security hotfixes and internet driver intergrated
Edit 2: The install went fine - Windows Folder - 1.15 GB  I know - it’s horribly bloated compared to nLited XP’s, but for Vista, it’s KEWL 8) (Sorry Ganda)

I’ve removed some more dll-files in system32, so now I’m down at 230 MB!
I don’t know if it’s because I recently installed Windows, or if it’s just a placebo effect, but it feels like my XP is faster than ever! :BNC

+1 on the placebo effect.

Now it’s 223 MB… I guess I should stop for now… :BNC

Thanks (:SHY)

Now your Windows folder is smaller than mine for the first time, I’m still at 227 MB (230 with themes). (:CLP)

Commodus: Thanks for trying hard, now I realize for the first time that Vista won’t come close to XP. Guess I’ll stay on XP forever, yet I prefer to have the “latest stuff”.

Well cangrats on all the accomplishments guys… lol
