How to slim down and tweak (kill) your Windows XP installation

Updated info…

Services: 5 (6 with CFP 3)
Active processes (taskmgr.exe excluded): 12 (that’s with cfp.exe and cmdagent.exe)
Registry size (optimized): 16,604 KB
Size of WINDOWS-folder: 268 MB (system32 is 243 MB)

LA, how did you get such a small registry size?

The only thing I’ve done is to remove everything that RegSeeker and CCleaner finds. Including the red stuff. ;D Also, I suppose my programs don’t write much to the registry. If you have bloated programs like Nero I’m sure they write a lot to the registry. I guess you don’t have .NET Framework, but if you do, it would add several MB to the size.

I’m surprised that my registry is only 9.3 MB after defrag. Yet I wonder if there are many leftovers from the old Windows times. Worth investigating! If I find anything that’s simple to remove and takes a lot of space, I’ll post. :-TU

Hey, you are close to me now. My system32 is still 222 MB. We have the same amount of processes (probably all processes are the same for us), but I have 7 services enabled (with CFP).

LA

I don’t have .NET Framework, and I’ve replaced Nero with Avi2Dvd and ImgBurn.
Here’s my program list:
7-zip - For opening archives

AusLogics Disk Defrag - Replacement for the bloated built-in defragmenter utility

AusLogics Registry Defrag (I don’t know if it’s needed with NT Registry Optimizer?) - For defragmenting the registry

Avi2Dvd - I use it to encode avi-files to DVD

AviSynth 2.5 - Required for Avi2Dvd

CCleaner - Junk file and registry cleaner

FlashGet - Download stuff that gets really slow…

ImgBurn - Burn the ISOs created by Avi2Dvd

Internet Explorer - In case a website wouldn’t work with Firefox

Firefox - Web browser

NT Registry Optimizer - To lower the size of the registry, which also makes the WINDOWS-folder smaller,
since the registry is located in WINDOWS\system32\config

Spybot - Search & Destroy - I use the immunization function

uTorrent - For downloading legal stuff

Xvid - Needed for Avi2Dvd

And ATI-drivers, Realtek Ac’97-drivers and VIA-drivers.

Any of them add a lot of junk to the registry?

EDIT: LA, what about sv and sv-se in system32? Have you deleted them?
I have 1,499 files in the WINDOWS-folder (counting all sub-folders), what about you?

Further:

Not that I’m aware of, are they large? I don’t have them. Sounds like they are Swedish-related? My Swedish works fine here. BTW my XP Home is in English, I think yours is in Swedish? Maybe you’d better keep them, at least be careful.

Counting everything (including Installer and Resources) makes it 1,248 files!

Have you removed the .bak files in system32\config? NTREGOPT creates them. It also creates .bak files in your user profile. I’m sure you know that. Speaking of user profiles, I may be completely wrong, but that may be something that adds megabytes to your registry? Also, have your removed “Default User” and “LocalService”?

Finally, have you removed the system32\wbem folder? All I have in system32 is CatRoot, CatRoot2, config (in which I deleted all of the folder “systemprofile”, although parts of it returns after rebooting), drivers, Macromed, spool.

LA

I’ve installed the portable CCleaner. AusLogics Registry Defrag has been removed, but I’ll keep the Disk Defragment tool.

My user profile is 13.9 MB.

Like 150 KB, but they take space in the system32-folder ;D

Yepp.

Careful? Are you stupid? :o
I wiped them, and everything works like normal…

1,447 for me now.

Yeah, I always delete them after optimizing the registry.

It’s only NTUSER.DAT that affects the registry, as it’s the currentuser-part.

Of course. I don’t have any users named that, so why should they have profiles?

The WBEM-folder was like 30 MB, so I couldn’t resist deleting it.

In WINDOWS I have these folders:
Debug
Fonts
inf
Prefetch (only prefetches the boot)
Resources (I’ve deleted the standard one, as I use royale noir)
system32
Temp
WinSxS

And the following files:
ativpsrm.bin
explorer.exe
regedit.exe

In system32 I have four folders:
CatRoot
CatRoot2
config
drivers

And 917 files :stuck_out_tongue:

13.9 MB? Takes a lot of time to load. >:-D Mine is 6.0 MB.

Look great. :-TU But what about Installer? Can you really uninstall programs now?

As much as I’ve warned about the inf folder, I deleted it a couple of days ago - although I keep a backup on another partition, where I have all documentation, installers etc. for restoring Windows.

Interesting, that means I should be able to delete bootstat.dat and save 2 KB! :BNC

What about Macromed? If I remove it, Flash needs to be reinstalled and the folder gets recreated.

I suppose you mean in system32 only (then it’s 874 files for me), not the subfolders (then it’s 1064 files here).

LA

I suspected bootstat.dat to be recreated after a reboot since that’s what I can see on the date/time. Strange, I now deleted bootstat.dat and rebooted. It hasn’t returned.

So the Windows folder looks neat now! I’m keeping help files in case I want help in any program. Maybe CFP? 88)

About one second

I don’t need to uninstall anything. And if I should, I can do it manually.

I’ll leave my inf-folder.

I don’t have flash player. I don’t need flash player.

Yeah, I meant system32 only.

I deleted some fonts, so now I have 15 fonts with a total size of 2.22 MB!
The WINDOWS-folder is now 257 MB!

257 MB with or without themes? I’m still on 247 MB without themes and installers. I won’t delete installers, some of them may be needed when updating programs.

Congrats on your slimmed Fonts folder, mine is bloated in comparasion. 61 fonts / 10.5 MB… still I’ve already removed some fonts. But I prefer keeping a palette of different fonts.

LA

I have win 98 on a old pc… I can give it to you if you want to kill it… I do not think it is hard to kill win 98 based pc (:WIN)

see:

With themes. With ‘the Windows-folder’ I mean all files and sub-folders. Themes are only 3.29 MB, so it wouldn’t make such a big difference.

No thanks, I don’t want it. And I know they’re easy to kill. They BSoD for everything you do.

Then mine is 248 now (still without installers), as I also removed some fonts. However, be careful (why am I even writing that… 88)) when removing fonts. I found out that removing some font will cause the - sign in lists of OOo Writer documents not to be exported in PDF. Very annoying. Don’t remember which font it was, at least I have it now. :a0

For example:

  • Rag
  • LA
  • triple x

would look like

Rag
LA
triplex

when exporting to PDF. The same goes for bullet lists I think. Ah, never mind. You don’t even use OOo, right?

No thanks, I’m happy with XP.

LA

I can’t use any printer on this computer, so why would I need OOo? Also, I recently posted a list of all installed programs :stuck_out_tongue:

You can export to PDF without printing. OOo, for school work? 88)

Yeah, that’s why I realized that you don’t have Office, although I find it hard to beleive that anyone doesn’t have a writer (except for gamers). :-La

LA

Well you can probably forget about triple x 88)

:stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t use PDF.

I still have Notepad :BNC

But I have printer and OOo on a bloated XP machine :stuck_out_tongue:

New stats:

WINDOWS folder (without themes and installers)
Size on disk - 231 MB
Number of files (incl. files in subfolders) - 1169

system32 folder
Size on disk - 211 MB
Number of files (incl. files in subfolders) - 1044

This is thanks to deleting some stuff in WinSxS, and even more important, the folders system32\CatRoot and system32\CatRoot2.

LA

Wow, that’s nice.
WINDOWS is 244 MB with 1,335 files and system32 is 225 MB with 1,011 files.

Can’t believe that my XP is still completely stable, and supports all programs/functionality I need.

As for system32, I suppose you mean in the folder itself, not the subfolders. Else you would have a 12 MB larger system32 than me, but with less number of files. Which is not impossible, but maybe not probable.

LA

Just another tip.

Partition your hard drive from 1 to 2 partitions. Install windows on 1, and the other software on 2. This way windows will stay fast ;D (have been using this for 4 months now and it’s :-TU)
