Comodo is going to have to create their own download site, lol. They can make a Zone Alarm download that won’t work

Over in the Cool Stuff thread, Kail gave this website: http://interfacelift.com/ They have a lot of wallpaper/backgrounds, themes, and icons for different OS. In going thru the site, I did not see any fees; it appears to be all for free. InterfaceLIFT says they are, “your source for graphical user interface enhancements for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, and Linux. We specialize in desktop wallpaper, icons, themes, and news with a focus on community.”

In order to use 3rd party themes for Win XP, you will need to replace their locked uxtheme.dll with an unlocked one. A free installer multi-patch (version 5.0) is available here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/UXTheme-MultiPatcher.shtml. This will work for Win XP SP2 and later; there may be issues if you don’t have SP2 yet (requiring an earlier version of the multi-patcher). When you run the multi-patch, you will get a window telling you to wait 1 minute before rebooting. While you wait, Windows will warn you that you need to replace a file with a previous version; you have to ignore/cancel that replacement (or Windows will overwrite the file you just replaced, with their original - thus ruining your whole process).

There are specific instructions on InterfaceLIFT, in their FAQs, about installing/using Themes. The unpacked theme files have to be copied/moved into C:/Windows/Resources/Themes, and the actual name of the theme file has to match the folder that it’s in (example: ResOS.msstyle must be in a folder named “ResOS”). The themes are accessed thru the Appearance tab/windows & buttons, of your desktop Properties, not thru the Themes tab. The FAQs explain all this in detail.

I just went thru all this and had some troubles to work thru, so I wanted to share the fruits of my labor with others who might not have done this b4. This is the free route to changing the appearance of Windows (there’s shareware software as well, that we won’t mention here…).

Paul, I noticed back in August you submitted accuweather desktop… it may have come about since then (heck, I don’t know), but FF has an accuweather extension that you can format for specific details you want to see, how often it updates, where you want it placed in the browser, etc. If you click any of the info it provides, it takes you to that specific webpage (although it opens in the current tab, rather than a new one).

Hi if you mean forecast fox, yup, I have used that extensively!

Hi all - here are a couple fun ones I found at the site where I got my internet tv proggy - Eastbay tech

YouTube Grabber app

Ahhh, but I think there is another I didn’t see I think you might really like…

Youtube Grabber is a free tool that downloads FLV files from youtube.

Simply copy and paste the URL of a video from youtube into the program, press grab OR enter, and the file will be downloaded into the same directory as the program.

Download the Grabber and a FLV Player from here:

I really do hope these can help the forum. enjoy.

Hello the free programs collection has been updated. Keep them coming!

Opera has that widget, to download videos that you can only watch in the browser. Youtube one possibility. Sometimes it doen’t download everything, but maybe a newer version is available.

GeSWall - http://www.gentlesecurity.com/personal.html - “you can safely surf the web, open e-mail attachments, chat, exchange files etc, regardless of the security threats posed by the internet. GeSWall protects you from intrusions and malicious software by isolating vulnerable applications. Isolation applies an access restriction policy that effectively prevents all kinds of attacks, known and unknown.”

■■■ - ■■■ -- ANONYMITY & PRIVACY - “■■■ makes it possible to surf the internet anonymously and unobservably(…) ■■■ uses a single static address which is shared by many ■■■ users. That way neither the visited website, nor an eavesdropper can determine which user visited which website(…) Instead of connecting directly to a webserver, users take a detour, connecting with encryption through several intermediaries, so-called Mixes…”

The Free Software Collection has been updated :). Keep them coming

Just a quick note, regarding Sysinternals The website is still up, but none of the links seemed to work; maybe cuz they’re in the process of transferring over to the MS site. I didn’t try to find 'em on MS, as they’re not supposed to be there until next week.

I downloaded most of them prior ;D ;D ;D but yes I think they are preparing for the move.

Here’s one I just began using…

http://www.tucows.com/get/381108_150188

Outlook express notifier. It seems to work well. I did choose to have it in sys tray, much easier, can open outlook E and get notified, etc…very nice so far. It is free.

Paul

Use Thunderbird instead… ;D

I concur. ;D

Let me make an update here…

On this page https://forums.comodo.com/index.php/topic,1731.0.html there’s a link to Process Explorer (there’s also one to the sysinternals homepage; that’s not the one I mean). If you follow that link to Process Explorer, the other pages & programs seem to be able to load/download. Maybe it’s an issue of caching, I don’t know. At any rate, that will allow you to get some of those utilities if you want 'em.

An oldie but a goodie

www.epsilonsquared.com

InstallWatch monitors and records what happens during a software installation, with the result exported to a txt file

InstallRite packages what happens during a software installation into a single executable that can be run and will replicate what the original installation did. You figure out what it could be used for.

N.B. Neither of these utilities are guaranteed to work for every software install you do.

cheers

Free Programs collection has been updated.

Sysinternals is now at Microsoft Technet. All software seems to have gone with them.

They have also added a new one, Process Monitor. This combines the features of FileMon & RegMon; showing realtime file system, registry, & process/thread activity. It has filtering, session info, simultaneous logging, and more.
