Free usefull programs

Hi guys. I created this topic for sharing among the comodo family the existance of other free usefull programs. These programs can be anything worth mentioning but remember that must be free.

Just one simple rule: “No shareware/adware or paid applications will be accepted. Only free programs, not necessary opensource, which not violate copyright laws.”

If you happen to know any please post it here, providing a small description and a link to the site.

The “Collection” is located here: https://forums.comodo.com/index.php/topic,1731.0.html

Miranda IM – Cross-platform client to connect to MSN/AIM/ICQ/IRC/YIM/Jabber, etc.

GAIM – Same purpose as Miranda IM but different.

BitWise IM – Free IM program with free 128bit Blowfish encryption and direct connection (Your messages and files move from PC to PC without going through any server, while being encryped). Very safe and great!

Spyware Terminator + ClamWin Antivirus – They work together as HIPS and spyware/virus cleaner.

Camouflage – Program to compress files. The fun part is: It can, for example, make a .JPG image file with hidden content inside it, that can only be un-compressed with this same software.

I have hundreds of other cool programs, I’ll post more later.

Thanks BullHorn.

Keep them coming. ;D

No-IP – Program to forward your IP through a DNS name of your choice. For example: BHTS.No-IP.Info

ATH.CX – Same as No-IP but looks like: BHTS.ath.cx

foobar2000 – A music-player software. You can forget about Winamp or Windows Media Player, foobar2000 is all you need.

Audacity – Program to edit audio files. You cna cut, delete, add, mix, whatever you wish to an audio file.

Free Download Manager – Pretty much like Flashget, Getright and Download Accelerator Plus, except it’s free, comes without any kind of adware and has an option to download sites fully and easily.

I’ll post more later.

Some Microsoft Utilities

Microsoft Virtual pc 2004
Virtual PC is a powerful software virtualization solution that allows you to run multiple PC-based operating systems simultaneously on one workstation, providing a safety net to maintain compatibility with legacy applications while you migrate to a new operating system.

Shared Computer Toolkit
Similar with Goback, DeepFreeze, Firstdefence and RestoreIt.
Unauthorized changes to a hard disk can make shared computers less reliable. Windows Disk Protection helps to prevent users, viruses, spyware, or other programs from making permanent changes to the hard disk by clearing changes each time the computer restarts.
Because certain changes, such as critical updates and antivirus signatures, need to be permanently saved, Windows Disk Protection allows you to schedule such changes to occur automatically at whatever time you choose.
(It is not Compatible with XP Media Center Edition 2005)

PowerToys for XP
A collection of tools that provide fun and functionality to your computer running Windows XP.

others will come later ;D

Here is some programs that I use:

7-Zip and ZipGenius

Two top of the line Zip Utilities. For people who love to have a nicer interface, I suggest that you go for ZipGenius.

Process Explorer
A nifty program to check what is going on on your computer. It analyses current running processes and offer you a way to terminate them. Recommended for diagnostics.

Firefox
A great alternative Internet browser to Internet Explorer. I believe no further explanation is required.

winmd5sum
A utility that calculates the MD5 sum of a file. MD5 sum of a file is like a thumbprint of the file. If you don’t know what a MD5 sum is, you won’t need this program anyway. However, if you are curious, just start a thread and I will reply.

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack
This is the ONLY program that you will need to watch movies in your PC. Seriously, it support so many files that I have only heard of 10% of the files that it support.

Yours truly,
DoomScythe

Paul no need to apologize. This is the place to post them.
I just created the collection topic for helping to categorize the programs. (:WIN)

Anything & everything from SysInternals (Process Explorer is one that has already been mentioned).

But, you’ll need to hurry… Microsoft recently acquired SysInternals & they may not keep the site up much longer.

Irfanview- A nice lightweight viewer

IZarc- Zip/unzip tool

MediaJoin-Combines audio or video files. Download from Snapfiles.com
Error 404 - Not found

Thunderbird- A great free email client from Mozilla

Just a quick mention…This is great Pandlouk, instead of looking for my .exe files , or searching for a program, I just come here and find my favorites as well as try others, this may branch into Comodo download site, lol.

Cheers,

Paul

Paul I like this idea. (:CLP)
It sure can help to find our favorite programs links ;D

I can recommend a nice free virtualizating program: SVS or Software Vitualization Solution.
If you want to test new software and want to get rid of the any hassle if the program is not to your liking or it is incompatible with your system.

You install the software you like to try in a virtual environment.
You have to “activate” the program, once it is installed, via an icon in the window of SVS. It triggers the virtual enviroment to start with the program.
As long as the program is not activated it is like it wasnt installed in the first place. When activated the files appear in your file system. Nothing is written to the registry itself, it is written in the virtual environment but windows thinks it is installed.
If you dont like the software you try? Just delet the icon in SVS window and all traces of that program is gone.

You can export the program to another computer that has SVS installed.
Here are som free exported programs: http://www.svsdownloads.com/
All you have to do is to import the .vsa file into SVS and activate it.

They dont recommend it for malware testing. It propably will work against most of the malware, but Altiris (the developers) have not built this program (or tested) for that purpouse.
I use it alot to test software (I do test alot of software  ) and I never have to worry that it wont uninstall properly, ie leaving traces in registry, leaving files behind or that they simply doesnt uninstall because of a porly written uninstaller.

I have updated the collection. A big thanks to BullHorn,DoomScythe,comicfan2000,panic,kail,KingKull and sukarof for contributing them. (:LOV)

ps. if you have any ideas on how to categorize them just add it here

As for SVS I think the “utilities” section is fine

I have another gem that I use that you can put in utilities section:

Locate32 fast file search.
From the authors web site:
"This program saves names of all files in your hard drives to file database. After that you can locate files. Very fast. This program works like updatedb and locate in Unix systems. Win32 based locating program also included. Program works with Windows 98/ME/NT4/2000/XP (and with Windows 95 if Internet Explorer 3 is installed). "

A bit like Agent Ransack, but since it works with a database of the files it is much faster. The downside is that it takes 2.5 minutes to update the database (329Gb of files in my machine) you can schedule the update of the database although it doesnt take much resources while updating.

Once the database is updated file search is lightning fast.

Free Launch Bar, I just adore this little freebee. For me it replaces the start button. It’s so good that I actually forgot about it, although I use it extensively. Here’s the description from the web site…

Free Launch Bar is a Free replacement for the standard Quick Launch bar. All functions presented in Quick Launch are also in Free Launch Bar. However, the Free Launch Bar is fully compatible with Quick Launch because it uses the same folder for shortcuts. But there is one huge difference. Free Launch Bar allows you to combine your shortcuts into groups. This feature looks like popup menus. This vastly improves the management of your shortcuts and save working space on your desktop. By using Free Launch Bar, you speed up the launching of your applications like never before.
