COMODO Internet Security 6.3.301250.2972 Released!

With the bloat comment I wasn’t aiming at the performance but to the fact bells and whistles are being added that I don’t consider as belonging to the core tasks of a browser. Let alone that it would be needed because people already have an av.

The bloat comment was to remind the crowd that detection only brings but so much protection.

Are we talking about browsers in this thread or is it about CIS 6.3.301250.2972 release? :P0l

Nothing like a bit off topic sometimes but let’s get back to business folks…

Updated with no problems, thanks Comodo.

Installed this version after new set up of Windows XP… Must say for the first time v6 worked without a problem… First time…!!!

CIS for Chrome OS? :stuck_out_tongue:

Secure software eliminates the need for security software. A secure OS (not beginning with a W…), a secure (sandboxed) browser with phisihing-protection, like Safe Browsing. All you need. 8)

There is always a first time

And an OS that only runs Chrome browser based apps. No thanks. I’ll stick with the big W.

With UAC enable IE runs in a sandbox as well ever since Vista.

Linux is also written in an unstable language, a variation of C, like Windows. Make Linux bigger and the malware crowd will start flocking around it and attacking it in a big way. The only thing that Linux differs significantly is that it by default user are working as limited user making it harder for malware to set foot ashore. But malware that abuses known vulnerabilities will get in. And nothing like a bit of social engineering cannot accomplish.

Or may be operating systems should be rewritten because sandboxes are nothing but stop plugs anyway for problems caused by architectural choices… 88) :-X

Yes happy to have it…!! ;D

Vista (especially 64-bit) was indeed a big step forward, but that step took five years! And it didn’t matter to most users, since XP remained the most used desktop-OS until it was dethroned by Windows 7, in October 2011. That is one of the biggest security problems with Windows: it takes a horribly long time to get rid of obsolete and insecure versions.

Regarding limited users (which is also a basic form of sandboxing), that is true for Windows (Vista+) too, where admin rights must be granted through UAC; by default all applications run with limited rights.

Linux is already used on a great number of servers and hundreds of millions of mobile devices, so it is indeed a target worth trying to attack.

The ongoing increase in OS-fragmentation (desktop + mobile) will not stop. That makes it harder to make successful large-scale attacks. We are also moving away from dangerous installations à la Windows to more closed and controlled “stores” like Chrome Web Store, Ubuntu Software Center, Google Play Store (Android), Windows Store (Windows 8/8.1/RT), App Store (iOS, OS X). That combined with more secure systems (with sandboxing) will make “local” security software such as AV and HIPS less important (or even impossible to install). Instead I think the focus will be on stopping truly platform independent “attacks”: phishing and other “social engineering”.

“The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done : and there is no new thing under the sun…”
As for OSs being released, Throughout its history, every other release has been nothing but junk. Remember 98, "ME, XP, “Vista”, Windows 7, “Now Windows 8 and 8.1” Etc.

Except that 8 and 8.1 are not junk. They are actually very good. If you don’t like the default UI, you can use something like Classic Shell and always work from the desktop just like Windows 7. The changes made in 8.1 let you boot to the desktop and if used and set up correctly can almost eliminate the need for the additional UI software. The Start button in 8.1 does a lot more than just switch you back to the “Metro” UI if you just right click on it and enabling the desktop toolbar gives you easy access to all your installed applications just like from the traditional Start button in previous Windows versions.

Then why are you on Windows?

Dch48 do not be a fool! Windows 8 and its so-called fix 8.1 is ■■■■! there is way too much proof to even list.

Eric I use Windows 7 and in my opinion is better than XP! And I would rather use something else than anything that Microsoft puts out but, I just do not know of anything else (at this point.

The proof is that once you get past the UI issues and settle on one you like, Win 8 is actually a faster, lighter, more secure, and just plain better OS than Win 7. All of the experts say that. It runs much better on older machines with old hardware than Win 7 does. I have it on my 2005 vintage single core laptop and it runs just as good as XP did. It also is much more secure than XP even now. After XP support dies it will become exponentially better. Windows 8 also boots much faster than XP and even 7.

People complaining about the UI and refusing to even try to work with Windows 8 or 8.1 are not “proof” that it is a bad OS. Those are the only complaints I ever see and it’s getting old fast. Once you actually work with it for a while, you realize how good it really is. Originally, I was one of those critics myself but I decided to actually try it and have come around. It’s compatibility with older hardware and legacy software is truly remarkable.

Yes Windows 7 is an excellent OS in it’s own right and is a lot better than XP but 8, and now 8.1, is lighter and more versatile. The cycle of good, bad, good, bad has been broken.

Arguing over whether an OS is good or bad is useless. This is an opinion question. Now don’t get me wrong, you could create a list of pros and cons, but the problem with opinion is that two people can look at the same list and draw two very different conclusions because of how important certain aspects personally are to them.

That said, this conversation is off-topic and is clogging up this topic. !ot!

Everyone, refrain from any off-topic conversations about the quality of Windows OS, at least in this topic. Stay on topic. :P0l

Windows 7 is so much better! LOL! Just kidding :a0

I just hope that with the next release we will see more bug fixes… I’m aware that they might not post all of them but still… I want to see 200 fixes or version 7 already ;D

+1

Kardo

You still can’t submit files form UI… This is going on for months. :frowning:
