Can't scan or update, after installing offline installer

CIS version: Comodo Internet Security 2020 v12.2.2.7036
Windows version: Windows 10 Pro 1909
Internet Explorer connection settings are set to autodetect, and there is no proxy

Tried to install with the normal installer, and got a message “Failed to initialize the installer. Please check your internet connection and/or Internet Explorer connection settings. Error: 12175. Content decoding has failed” so i downloaded the offline installer.

The install itself went smoothly, but the quick scan failed, and any attempts to update the program, or virus definitions result in what’s shown in the attached screenshot. ???

Since installing this disables Windows defender, I’m left completely vulnerable, so uninstall is required. This is a fairly new install of Windows 10, maybe 3 weeks old at most.

Edit: Laptop (different PC on same network) already has a version of CIS installed 12.0.0.6818. If I choose to run it’s update, or scan, they work perfectly fine, and if I download the online installer for
the 12.2.2 version, it also has the same error message as above, so this definitely seems like a problem with the newest version, and not my system/network

Edit 2: emailed autoruns.arn-jasoncollege24.zip and attached other logs to this post. One log was never generated, so not included.

using the latest cis… i have this problem…and this problem…

Error: 0x80072f8f - Content decoding has failed

ok, i fixed… i change the url of comodo in the proxy setting, was with https, and not working… without (http), working

Every once in a while I make spot checks on CIS to make sure it is updated, this is usually a transparent process. But last night, June 2, 2020 I noticed that CIS had not updated in 24 hours despite my computer having been on for over 14 hours.

When I tried to update it manually through Tasks> Update I received the following error:

Task: Check for program updates
Status: Content decoding has failed

“View Log” showed the following: Error: 0x80072f8f - Content decoding has failed

I thought perhaps that one or some of CIS’ files had gone corrupt, this has happened before and was resolved with a reinstall. However, updates had been working the day before and when I started my laptops, both of which have a different O/S and hardware and which I had not started for over a week I had the same problem.

A search in the forum for “Content decoding has failed” returned a post by another user who said that all he had to do was modify the host from:

https://download.comodo.com

to

http://download.comodo.com

Settings> Updates> Proxy and Host Settings> Servers

And he was right, that did work…

But a couple of things worry me, I’ve been using CIS for around 15 years, that setting is something I would have never changed, it was set by CIS upon install and there it stayed undisturbed, so why would I suddenly have to change it?

I find it a bit disconcerting that:

  1. Comodo would chose to use an insecure connection over a secure one from one day to the next.
  2. Comodo would chose to do so without notification and letting users find out by chance.

I also have to wonder how many users out there are not getting their signatures updated without noticing, If i hadn’t checked I would have never known.

A SSL certificate issue on the download servers is causing the issue hence needing to switch to non-https download server.

Some kind of a warning, of announcement in say… “General Announcements” would have been nice. Just saying.

at first i was think about the clock of my pc, beacause that affect the certificate, but with the clock in time… same thing happend… so, change the url… but i hope soon fix that…is not secure for sure using a http.

I have run into this as well, beginning last evening.
However, there appears to be more to this issue…

Last evening, I did a complete uninstall of the CIS Firewall (cmd_fw_installer), version 12.2.2.7036 using your uninstall tool, ciscleanuptool_x64.

Attempts to reinstall the software gives:

Failed To Initialize the installer. Please check your internet connection and/or Internet Explorer connection settings. Error: 12175. Content decoding has failed.

I have attempted to re-download the file from the servers listed in page 1 of the following forum post HERE:

The URL I used is:

http://download.comodo.com/cis/download/installs/2000/partners/cmd_fw_installer.exe

which points to:

https://cdn.download.comodo.com/cis/download/installs/2000/partners/cmd_fw_installer.exe

Not surprisingly, Firefox gives a certificate error, which is rectified by changing the URL to:

http://cdn.download.comodo.com/cis/download/installs/2000/partners/cmd_fw_installer.exe

But Alas, it is the same version I already have. Attempts to Install still gives:

Failed To Initialize the installer. Please check your internet connection and/or Internet Explorer connection settings. Error: 12175. Content decoding has failed.

I have attempted restoring my system to two previous points in time, with the same results.
I have attempted installing the previous version, v12.1.0.6914, with the same result.

Running

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc/scannow

did not resolve the issue.

Norton, Malwarebytes, and ADW Cleaner found no issues with my system, nor am I experiencing any other issues of any kind. I have zero connectivity issues of any kind other than this. I have not yet upgraded to Windows 10 Version 2004. I am still running Windows 10 Version 1909. Specifically, Windows 10.0.18363 (Build 18363).

I await your response.

Respectfully,

I have the exact same issue!!! Cannot reinstall CIS Pro. Please help!!!

I’ve had that “content decoding” thing happen with LOTS of file submissions whenever an unknown file gets blocked. The devs spent all that time working on upgrading everything to HTTPS only to mess it up somehow.

I guess this mess-up isn’t too egregious. It didn’t effect the performance of windows and it didn’t really affect the protection level either. Since it’s a whitelisting application.

Got the error trying to update the Firewall software. (12.2.2.7036).

Task: Check for program updates
Status: Content decoding has failed

“View Log” showed the following: Error: 0x80072f8f - Content decoding has failed.

Uninstalled Firewall Using ciscleanuptool_x64.

Reinstall unsuccessful, giving the following error:

Failed To Initialize the installer. Please check your internet connection and/or Internet Explorer connection settings. Error: 12175. Content decoding has failed.

Now what?

Same happened to me. Sent in a ticket. Not sure how long it will take them to respond :frowning:

I have this problem also.

search through the forum didn’t found same topic hence I open new post.
Admin please help move to relevant topic if I had overlooked.

problem :
update (both database & program) either via the update before scan option or manual click on the update button or the program schedule auto update, the update failed with the message “update decoding failed”. last update was 4 days ago.

device status:
this is a newly installed system, just re-installed last week.

OS : Windows 10 Ver 1909 build 18363.863 30th April 2020
Installation type : Clean Install, Acer OEM.

Comodo status :
Product Ver : 12.2.2.7036
Database Ver : 32489
Installer : CIS offline installer (official from this forum)

Print screen attached.

I am experiencing the same issue. This problem started yesterday (6/2). Performing an update in CIS results in failures with an error status of “0x80072f8f - Content decoding has failed”. To test further, I then created a virtual machine with a fresh installation of Windows. However, the CIS installer will not run and displays the same error message. Here is my operating system and CIS product information:

Windows 10 Professional version 2004

COMODO Internet Security Premium
Product Version: 12.2.2.7036
Database Version: 32497

I got this too.
Latest version. Only AV, FW, & Containment enabled.

just checked , It’s been success updated today as at (now) 4rd Jun 2020, 17:16 (GMT+8)

Never Quoted myself before.

Anywho, I am now able to re-install and update the software.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this issue.

I concur. Update is all normal again.

I just tried downloading comodo firewall from the bookmark I use whenever I need to download it again.

this link here http://download.comodo.com/cis/download/installs/7030/standalone/cmd_fw_installer.exe

firefox gives me a security warning about it saying it’s an SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN

proceeding anyway will download the setup file that I always get and then I get the same error message from the post I quoted here
