Eric

Please note, in this and my posts below, I have only referred to bugs I can duplicate on my machine. (Except in the case of the post entitled ‘Summary of bugs I cannot replicate’ of course!). Other CAS users please do add your own bugs!

A. CASproc.exe (V2.6) instances seem to lock up sometimes when receiving email. https://forums.comodo.com/antispam/casprocexe_v26_instances_seem_to_lock_up_sometimes_when_receiving_email-t33361.0.html;msg239549#msg239549

C. Outlook instability after installing CAS 2.6 - bug?. https://forums.comodo.com/antispam/outlook_instability_after_installing_cas_26_bug-t33342.0.html;msg239412#msg239412

D. CAS 2.6 seizes focus unecessarily - bug? https://forums.comodo.com/empty-t33048.0.html

E. Text file import bug. https://forums.comodo.com/empty-t32936.0.html.

F. Emails with blank or own address ‘envelope’ email header fields get through (Bug or wish list?) https://forums.comodo.com/antispam/comodo_antispam_wishlist_rev_1-t121.0.html;msg234922#msg234922

G. Challenge email (ASA) seems to be editable but is not. This link examines - need to read whole thread. https://forums.comodo.com/antispam/personalise_the_asa-t23944.0.html

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
5-8. Please seee individual bug reports

Thanks for these Mouse. I’ll point the Devs in the direction of this topic.

On installation CAS downloads all emails stored on email server - those previously downloaded into account as well as those which have not previously been downloaded. This can result in a large number of challenge emails being sent before the users has finalised whitelists, and can make the system use CAS use most processor cycles. Also when you disable any email account in CAS the same happens

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer , Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: Set you email account to store read message for, say, 30 days. (ADvanced tab in ‘more settings’ of email accounts in Outlook). a) Several days later install CAS and enable it and all email accounts. Press send/receive. b) Do a) then disable any account and press send/receive.
  6. Work around is to install CAS with monitoring disabled and all accounts disabled, press send receive, (reboot ?), then enable accounts
  7. Memory dumps: N/A
  8. Any additional information NA

If you enable delivery receipts in Outlook (& sometimes when you don’t) CAS can cause a blizzard of ‘mail delivery failures’ on first installation, by sending challenge messages to email newletters you have subscribed to.

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: Enable delivery receipts, set Outlook to store downloaded messages on server (see previous bug report), install CAS with inadequate whitelists, enable CAS and email account, press send/receive. CAS will send challenge emails to subscription services, most of which do not accept incoming emails, but will treat responses as standard received emails & quarantine them separately. CAS should recognise these as invalid challenge responses and delete them. Variant is when you allow a subsciption domain before the delivery failure response to the challenge email is received is received. CAS will allow the report through to the email client. It should delete it.
  6. How you tried to solve: Disable CAS when you install it, and do not re-enable until you have built comprehensive white lists. Alternatively use mail processing rule facilities to process mails that have things like ‘delivery failure’ in the subject AND ‘antispam’ in the body into a separate folder.
  7. Memory dumps: N/A
  8. Any additional information: CAS version = 2.6

CAS taskbar icon does not appear on reboot, though CAS32 is running. NB this is a standard XP bug, but i believe software can be tuned to avoid it.

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; ; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: Reboot computer running XP and CAS, depending on other software installed CAS icon particularlly likely not to occur, though CAS32.exe loads
  6. How you tried to solve: Log-off then log-on as same user, for more permanent fix Google XP disapearing taskbar icon bugs or similar. (Too many bugs and fixes to enumerate here). Alternatively create quick launch toolbar shortcut to CAS32.exe.
  7. Memory dumps: N/A
  8. Any additional information: CAS version = 2.6.

Whenever CAS detects a mail as spam, from that point forward, I get the pop up telling me that my smtp info is incorrect. I reinstall CAS and the same thing happens as soon as a mail is classified as spam.

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit Media Center Edition
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, Malwarebytes (on demand), Super AntiSpyware (on demand), AVG Link Scanner
  3. Email client: Outlook Express 6
  4. Email provider: GMX from gmx.com accessed by Outlook Express through pop3
  5. How you produced the problem: Simply using CAS
  6. How you tried to solve: Uninstall and reinstall of CAS
  7. Memory dumps: N/A
  8. Any additional information: CAS version = 2.6.

Block sender, block domain & report spam quarantine processes are often irritatinglly slow. Block sender and block domain are slow if you choose the ‘report as spam’ option wihich pops up. This suggests that its the spam reporting that is slowing things down. Should spam reporting be asynchronous (ie ‘fire and forget’ not ‘fire and wait for response’)?

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: Block or report email in quaratine database. Possibly occurs only when you have large whitelists like me - but you need large whitelists to use CAS properly. My whitelist has about 400 entries
  6. How you tried to solve: Checked processor load - this was low so was not the problem.
  7. Memory dumps: N/A
  8. Any additional information: CAS version = 2.6

If you enable the option ‘pop up the quarantine database when new entries are added’ option, the popped up display of the quarantine database often has no new entries.

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: Set pop up QDB option in advanced/miscellaneou tab, look at QDB display for account 1, close CAS main window, receive spam email in account 2, qDB will ‘pop up’ with blank screen. This is because QDB defaults to last displayed account when it pops up not ‘all accounts’ as it should.
  6. How you tried to solve: N/A
  7. Memory dumps: N/A
  8. Any additional information: CAS version = 2.6

The authentication database in CAS imports only one email address per Outlook contact. In outlook you can store multiple email addresses per contact.

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: create a contact list with one contact on it in Outlook, record multiple email addresses for this contact, use authentication database import facility to import the contact, only one whitelist entry will result.
  6. How you tried to solve: To resolve this you need to use Outlook own facililities to export the contact list to a text file, rememberng to include the email1-3 fiellds, and de-dupe and edit the resulting text file into a CAS B/W list. A lot of work!
  7. Memory dumps: N/A
  8. Any additional information: CAS version = 2.6

Deleted quarantine database entries do not disappear from view until you force a refresh - eg by changing the account you are viewing and then reverting to the original

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: See above
  6. How you tried to solve: N/A

If your email provider requires an SSL connection CAS will import the settings from your email client. Should you subsequently change the settings in CAS or Outlook, CAS may exhbit unstable behavoir. This may include Outlook repeatedly crashing, Outlook refusing to receive any emails, and hanging Casproc.exe (see other bug report above). The problem may not occur until the first email is sent from or received into the SSL account.

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: Have tried below to identify sequences that cause the errors. I believe they maybe related to the SSL port and encryption settings, and perhaps the (undocumented) ‘automatically update’ option, and the fact that CAS ‘corrects’ imported SSL settings. (SSL port assignments appear to be required in both client and CAS, but encryption must be limited to CAS. However once corruption has occurred, resetting these settings does not appear to always resolve).
First sequencewhich causes errors: starting from stable SSL account monitored by CAS, tick for SSL POP3 encryption in Outlook to match CAS settings, then press ‘send receive’ which fails first time then causes Outlook to crash second time. Unticking encryption in Outlook does not resolve unless you remember to reset port assigment to 995, as Outloook automatically sets port to 110 when you untick encryption. Ticking automatically update settings then pressing ‘send/receive’ results in an dramatic Outlook run-time error (appended).
Second sequence which causes errors: start from stable settings, in Outlook and CAS change SMTP port setting from 465 to 25, which is acceptable to Gmail, ensuring you leave SSL encryption setting unaltered (Outlook may try to change). Send message to SSL account, press send receive several times to ensure that CAS receives and processes. Outlook crashes.
Third sequence which causes errors: keep SMTP port assignment at 465 in Outlook & tick for SSL SMTP encryption, but make the SMTP port 25 in CAS. (Optionally send email from SSL account). Causes immediate Outlook run-time error and query at next send receive from CAS saying there is a problem with the server certificate while establishing a secure POP3 connection, and do you want to accept the certificate anyway? If you refuse Outlook enters a crash cycle, if set to automatically send receive on loading.
Fourth sequence. which causes errors. Same as third but make port assignment 465 in CAS you get a send receive dialog message from Outlook that SSL is unsupported, cancel try send receive again and Outlook crashes.
Other sequences. Have not yet managed to reliably reproduce the account settings that cause hanging CASproc, or failure of all accounts (inc. non-SSL) to receive mail - though I have observed this on my system when running with incorrect SSL account settings. If is posssible that these happens in one of the above sequence if, in addition, a spam mail is received. Will add details here if can reproduce.
  6. How you tried to solve: Disabling CAS monitoring of the acccount works while the account is disabled, the problem recurrs as soon as the SSL account is re-enabled. Manually resetting to the correct settings or removing & re-importing settings usually corrects but not always. Sometimes even unistalling and re-installing may not work. A registry clean may be required. The question arises why doe removing and re-importing accounts & re-installing not always resolve the problem? a) I have found that AS does not remove ‘removed’ accounts from the registry, and does not always remove them on uninstall b) the fact that Outlook changes port settings itself may lead to incorrect port settings when you re-import, if you do not check Outlook first c) if (see equence 3 above) you choose to accept a corrupt certificate, maybe this survives a re-install.
  7. Memory dumps: N/A
  8. Any additional information: CAS version = 2.6

(SUPERCEDED BY BUG POST ON SUSPEND/RESUME)

When using an account that requires SSL encryption, if an SSL session is interrupted by the PC going into standby mode an error message result - non-SSL sessions appear to survive this.

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: self evident
  6. How you tried to solve: Minor problem which may not need resolution, but could be resolved by CAS requesting denying OS standby requests until connection is complete
  7. Memory dumps: N/A
  8. Any additional information: CAS version = 2.6

After approving a quarantined email, 2 send/receives are required before receipt.

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - POP3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: Click a quarantined email in CAS, press approve domain button. Press send receive in Outlook - no email. Press again, and it arrives.
  6. How you tried to solve: N/A
  7. Memory dumps: N/A
  8. Any additional information: CAS version = 2.6

If your computer goes into suspend mode, on resume, you may get a series of error messages from SSL-based email accounts. Also synchronisation emails may be downloaded into your email account (from non-SSL email accounts), also duplicates of quarantined emails may be downloaded into your client (from non-SSL email accounts), also CAS32 may crash, also a send/receive executed immediately on resume may stall part way through and if Outlook is then closed Outlook may be left running without a user interface.

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop.
  3. Email client: Outlook 2003 (Addins: Mailbuddy - disabled, ODIR dedupe, copernic summariser - disabled, Exchange Extensions - disabled, Redemption Helper (part of CAS?))
  4. Email provider: Zen - POP3, SMTP; Gmail - Pop3, SMTP
  5. How you produced the problem: Set computer into power saving mode, enabling suspend resume. Optionally set CAS to synchronise quite frequently. Wait for computer to suspend, on resume you will sometimes get appended error messages & incorrectly downloaded emails and probelms with Outlook. (I think this may be dependent on whether automated Outlook send/receive occurs before network connection is re-established on resume, and perhaps before CAS is fully running. Or maybe due to programs that have high activity immediately after resume like Copernic Desktop Search).
  6. How you tried to solve: N/A
  7. Memory dumps: Tried to append but windows had deleted dump file
  8. Any additional information: CAS version = 2.6. Have recently discovered that the duplicate and quaranteened emails downloaded are those stored on the server. Presumably CAS kicks in too slowly after resume, so Outlook downloads directly (ie not via CAS) the emails stored on the server, and so does not realise they have already been downloaded by CAS.

CAS adds your own email address automatically to the whitelist and will not allow you to ‘block’ your own address. But wierdly CAS will allow you to remove your email address from the whitelist. If you do remove your own email addresss from the whitelist CAS will not let you re-add it via the GUI. But it will let you add it to the whitelist by sending a message to yourself or by importing it. Some of this may be intentional - for example the ability to remove your address from the whitelist allows you to simulate CAS authentication letter processing - but overall it seems too inconsistent to be intentional. Perhaps just need to relax the constraint on adding your own email address to whitelists via the GUI.

  1. Your Operating System: XP SP3 32bit
  2. Other Security and Utility Software Installed: CIS, CVE, CIV, CLP, Filezilla, Walllwatcher, Sony Ericsson PC software, Actual Window Manager, Routerstats, Revo, Process Explorer, Copernic Desktop

Summary of bugs reported by others in main forum since issue of CAS 2.6 (Jan 2009) that I cannot replicate either because a) I do not have the appropriate software. b) I do have relevant software, but bug does not occur. 1. Advanced screen for email account settings not documented in help file. Especially unclear what ‘automatically update account settings’ means.

  2. The installation program should ensure people understand that CAS does not work like other anti-spam tools, and explain how it does work. THis will ensure that people install it who will benefit from it, and prevent confused support requests. The key issues are a) that CAS is a default deny or rather challenge-based spam filter b) that CAS seeks to ensure that you need never see unauthorised mail and it is never downloaded into your client - it isn’t sent to a spam mail box in your client.

  3. The installation program should advise people not to switch on the ‘challenge/response’ policy until they have checked that the people they most frequently communicate with are white listed.

  4. Not sure but I think the ‘only allow digitally signed emails’ policy is actually a ‘only allow digitally signed emails and emails from whitelisted senders, don’t send challenge emails’ policy. If so best to describe it as such.

If you have been using synchronisation, then turn it off, you get constant reminders that it is turned off. One I could understand but persistant reminders seems wrong.
