Best/Recommended nLite Configurations

Toggie, it’s a part of my nature - minimalism. :-X

I figured out which option that caused my setup.exe to be gone. See the attached image. I decided to keep it gone, because I’ll only use this installation from booting. So setup.exe is unnecessary here. I also tweaked my brand new ISO a bit; added Windows Media support (according to above) but not the player itself. IE is untouched. Removed some more stuff too, but I think this ISO will work perfectly.

New size: 249 MB. 8)

Hey Leon, did you use the latest 1.4 or an older ver? I never saw such option in my setup. It’s either I enabled one of those fail-safe (the Compatibility one) options to avoid possible trouble or a different ver. Also, did you integrate any Service Packs?

You enabled Security Center? (:LGH)

Yes, latest 1.4. But that fail-safe thing, I thought it should only warn you, not take away the ability to use those “protected” options?

No integration of anything. The hotfixes did not work the first time, so I leave them. My current installation had sound and graphics drivers integrated. It works without problems, but I decided to leave them for the latest ISO (which is not the same as my current installation, which cannot handle Windows Media).

LOL, that ■■■■■■ security center, I enabled it only because I’m not 100% sure why I got CFP 2.4 + internet problems the last time. But probably it was something I did with the windows firewall, not that I removed SC (which I don’t even remember if I really did). This time (the current installtion and the even newer ISO) I kept both SC and firewall to be sure, but both are disabled by default.

Btw, I burned the new ISO with CDBurnerXP 4.0 (because InfraRecorder freezes my whole system :(), but something went wrong so I had to make a new CD with ImgBurn.

How’s it going with yours? Will you install it soon?

LA

LA, why don’t you use the nLite built in ISO burner?

I have no idea, the thought just hasn’t crossed my mind. I’ve always waited a while (perhaps to ponder whether it was a good setup or not) between the making of the ISO and the burning of it.

LA

You can always create the ISO, save it to disk, then, when you’re ready, rerun nLite and just burn the ISO…

But of course.

I’m disappointed with CDBurnerXP which ruined a CD (~ US $1, but still). It has always been nice. And the wonderful little InfraRecorder, why does it have to freeze? It has also worked before (though it froze also when I had a default XP setup, not nLite tweaked) Some registry cleaner’s fault? Well, end of discussion, because this is off topic.

Anyway, looking forward to try the latest setup.

And guys, imagine when we can integrate SP3 with XP… this day we may get more pleased than ever before, with Microsoft.

nLite for flexibility and Comodo for security, today I can’t see any better option than XP+nLite.

MorphOs would your nlite recommedations also apply to vlite? As I had Vista forced upon me when I
purchased my new laptop I would love to trim it down. Any insight you have is appreciated. Oh you
mentioned getting a prog to store your sys partition in dvd format… suggestions?
On a side note, I did enjoy the ■■■■ for the 2 years I was in Bamburg.

Nope, of course my recommendations will not work on Vista. Vista’s inherent sys architecture is way, if not totally different. If you want to “trim it down”, rather get your hands on a licensed copy of XP? The backup prog I use is old (2004) and not free (the only payware I use, by the way). It is called Simon Partition Backup. It works quite well using CD’s, though it has certain problems with some DVD’s.
Cheers.

MorphOs knows this better than me (actually I know nothing about Vista)

Nope, my friend, you’re perfectly wrong here (Sorry to say so). MorphOS doth naught know dis badder than thou dost. (LOL). In fact, VISTA is foreign language to me…
Pöiheg awroih hert awrhoh igasan öliher iwhwa

Quote LeoniAquila again:

Today I installed the nLite OS I made weeks ago (see previous posts), for the first time. It works very well, with the important exception of WMV support. I completely removed Windows Media Player (also the old 6.4 version), this may have caused WMV files not to be rendered anymore. The won’t work in Media Player Classic.

Well, they SHOULD work, if you haven’t removed the 6.4 compatibility as well :frowning:

http://fileforum.betanews.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative_QT6/1049831315/2

If needed, I can post the (hopefully) working files here, as published at the mentioned site some months ago (“hopefully” working ones, this means).

by the way, if you need the best (i.e. audiophile) mp3 player quality, it’s still XMPlay (obviously the smallest great audio player on earth) that rules…
(because of the B.A.S.S. concept), it is not too comfortable to use, though, but…configurable a lot.

takes time if you want do to so… needs no real install, by the way

Jetaudio does play ALL them files rather fine, too.
Windows Media Player is NOT the first choice concerning Audio Quality, btw…
And surely not, if concerned about security…

And… just to hail something…

I really think InfraRecorder is the only Burning program you’ll ever need.

If it does NOT work, it’s not the progs fault, I’m almost sure (in 99,99999 % of the cases).

It’s really a superlite Nero Killer (not to speak of the other contenders… at the moment)

Chris Kindahl is a rare kind of programmer.

Something like a very groovy One Man Band, if you know what I mean…

I totally support his free software. It’s simply great.

Cheers

Oh, forgot to answer to Soyabeaner

Quote: I took me hours to setup everything I wanted using Rebol’s suggestions on NLite. This program is gold. There are settings in there that I’ve never even encountered (even though I was confident I’ve seen all the XP tricks from googling these years). Now we’ll see if it lives up to its reputation. I won’t get to start this new beginning until probably year end. hehe

Now, I really DO hope your HEHE is still on your face?

What are your xperiences by now, friend?

oh …and … of course  have a ■■■■ (a fine one, I recommend)

Still have stuff to finish. Looks like I won’t be able to do this until early next year.

And…if it’s too late then?

Foobar2000 The definitive audio player

seems like this depends on personal opinions

so it shall be

It does and we’d better not go there

MorphOS, then we’d better stick with XP both of us.

I completely removed everything about Windows Media, including 6.4 support. All because I didn’t read earlier posts carefully enough. :-[ Thank you for offering files, but it’s alright, I will reinstall my system quite soon instead. This time with W.M. 6.4 support, so it’ll work out.

Media Player Classic forever, for LA. :-*

I totally agree with you on InfraRecorder, I suppose it’s RegCleaner that has made it impossible for me to run the program. It’s a pity, and surprising, since it has worked great before. I’ve used RegCleaner for a long time, with no InfraRecorder problems. So I have no idea what this is about, it doesn’t make it easier that the problem remained after a reinstallation of Windows XP. Anyway, let’s stick to the nLite stuff.

Thanks,
LA

Tried the new setup. Even though I left WMP 6.4, it was not possible to render WMV files. From nLite’s forum I got the tip of Windows Media Lite, which contains all components of Windows Media. It seems to be specifically designed for those who removes everything about Windows Media Player, but want to keep support for it.

/LA

Well, you’re totally right with “Windows Media Lite” being needed @ Löwenadler, old Weissbeer freak.

And that’s what I exactly posted some days ago in that oh so lenghty post above…
Please read again? I prefer the above link to codecguide and free-codecs.com, though.

fileforum.betanews is one of the best sites around, I guess.

Anyway, have a fine weisse, my friend

Yes thank you, I saw your links, but I wanted to find out why the WM support was gone - despite that I did not remove 6.4. It doesn’t matter really, I like to remove it completely with nLite and the install what’s necessary with WM Lite!

In my latest CD (hasn’t installed it yet) even more is gone, including all WM support which I will fix with WM Lite instead. The CD’s size is just below 200 MB!

–OT–

  1. QT Lite and Real Lite are good things too, I’ve always liked them. On the other hand, the QuickTime system seems to be vulnerable since Apple updates it quite often - and the non-Apple Lite versions always need an extra day or two to get updated… but who cares, if anything sneaks in, CFP 3 would catch it.

  2. InfraRecorder now doesn’t freeze!

  3. I actually haven’t had any Weiss at home since you gave me the tip of mixing with Coke, but I really should try it for Christmas

–End of OT–

Thanks,
LA

Internet Connection Wizard - (I’m the computer mage, so why I need a wizard?)

Internet Explorer - (■■■■■■■)

IIS - (Lallalala)

IP Conferencing - (Zoom, bye bye!)

MSN Explore - (Who use it…?)

Netmeeting - (So old…)

NetShell Cmd Tool - (Never used, so bye bye)

Search Assistant - (I like dogs, but not this one)

Security Center - (More like ResourceEating Center)

Shell Media Handler - (Oki)

NTSD - (Sounds stupid)

Tour - (No thx)

User account pictures - (I can live without them)

Zip folders - (Zap!)

Now to my favorite…
Services

I don’t know if nLite completely removes or only disabled the services…
Here’s what’s worth keeping enabled:

Event Log - (Might be useful sometimes)

Network Connections - (It’s set to manual, so why bothering disabling it)

Plug and Play - (Playing is funny)

RPC - (Your computer will stop working without this)

Windows Audio - (Needed for the sound to work)

Windows Management Instrumentation - (I don’t know what it’s used for, so better leave it alone)

Now I owned Safe Mode hard? :stuck_out_tongue:
Does it work? Yes, it works for what I need to use my computer for.

NOTE: YOU MIGHT WANT TO KEEP DHCP AND DNS ENABLED!

Cheers,
Ragwing

Rag, please post again when you’ve tried it! You’ve gotta do it soon, it’s holidays now.
