Unless I’m misunderstanding some crucial networking fact, (networks aren’t one of my strong-points) I don’t see how this is possible. :-\
I just don’t see how setting a single machine to utilize SecureDNS can possibly change the settings of any other machine on the network. Their DNS settings are going to stay the same, regardless of what I set mine to. Yes, I’ve set up filtering for the networks IP’s, but since all other machines are using different DNS settings, these filters are completely irrelevant to them.
If what you are saying is true, then I could force all the users of my ISP to use SecureDNS by registering the entire IP range in use by my ISP…
Yes,
After I thought some more on this.
Was about to edit my post.
It should play out as you describe.
I can’t test this now. No LAN set up.
The router and other machines requests should still go where they did.
And I am supposed to be fairly strong with networking. duh ???
Unless I apply the dns settings on the router level, the dns service will only work on my computer, right?
Oh wait, I remember using OpenDNS external ip updater on my computer and the service, then, affects (covers) all devices connected to the router (nvm, I also have the dns settings applied to the router).
However, if I set this dns settings to the IPv4 properties of my computer, it will override the dns settings of the router (unless the router is set to intercept port 53 and redirect all dns services to opendns.)
Am I right with my assumptions?
I’m excited to try this dns soon!
This is the first think I’ve said to the IT guy. On the network logs of the machines although, the traffic was being passed (filtered) through OpenDNS because I’ve registered the whole network (the IP range) there. I could never use DNS filter again. Look, OpenDNS and Comodo register the IP to get the filter options. If I register my notebook with the network ISP, the IP is being filtered. When I use it at home, another network should be registered, with another IP. At home I don’t mess anything, but at work…
If I’m doing anything wrong, please, correct me.
Nothing is being bocked in my computer. Settings are not relevant…
For instance, blocking proxy, the obvious http://www.torproject.org/ passed through 88)
I’m believing you… I’m using Comodo Secure DNS. Let’s see the IT guy on Monday
Although, it’s not blocking anything, like I’ve posted before (and others also).
Yes. These IP’s need to be registered for the results to be filtered. However, you need to be using their DNS severs for this filtering to occur. If you register your IP address, but do not change your DNS settings, the filters will do nothing because none of your traffic is being resolved by the DNS service.
In other words, unless the rest of the network is also using these DNS servers, the filters could not possibly apply to the other machines because they aren’t using the same DNS resolvers.
I don’t see any sign yet of filtering.
I believe they are still working on the DNS itself for worldwide speed and reliability, before they start filtering.
Hello all and thank you for your interest! To clarify a few points.
Javascript is required for the website to operate properly when configuring the filters and networks.
If you setup a filter for use it will affect all users that source from the same network you use, however the other users of the network would be required to use the same DNS service to see the result of the content filters.
This morning we’ve had a hardware failure that resulted in the only active DNS server to go offline. This would result in failed DNS queries. Please note that when this is live for all that there will be multiple and redundant servers involved that will prevent any downtime ongoing.
Right now we’re really wanting to see what you, the users, think of the content filters, if they are incorrect, too strong or too loose, so please continue to send us your feedback and corrections at http://dev.recursive.dns.com/app/exceptions/
I think they are much too loose. With all of the filters enabled, I really need to work hard to find a single site that gets blocked. I would expect by enabling all categories that my internet activities would be severely limited.
