windows updates [Resolved]

LM
Just to recap.I have one rule.
Application:svchost exe.
Parent:learn
Action:allow
Protocol:tcp/udp
Direction:in/out
Destination IP:any
Destination Port:any
Miscellaneous:blank

How does that sound?
Philip

hey, was the discussion we had b4, regarding that you’ve had issue w/ auto updates, but could do it manually?

And in that scenario I suggested a 2nd svchost.exe rule as a “catch-all”; more permissive than the other, just in case it didn’t want to work with some other changes we had made?

Am I starting to get back on track?

In general I would say yes, that rule is fine for svchost, and should allow autoupdates to be done.

LM

Your’e on track LM
Just one point.
In my last post i indicated the new rule.
When i next started my computer that rule had changed automatically.
It is now.
Application:c:\windows\system32\svchost.exe
Parent:specify
c:\windows\system32\services.exe
Action:allow
Protocol:tcp/udp
Direction:in/out
Destination IP:any
Destination Port:any
Miscelllaneous:blank
I was just suprised that the rule had altered maybe this is the way CFP works

Philip

That’s normal. In fact, it’s the whole point of setting the Parent to “Learn.” The next time the application runs, it will then “specify” the newly-learned parent, and will no longer learn any others. If you don’t want it to specify a parent ever and instead accept whatever the parent is in that scenario, you may try setting that to “Skip” instead.

Great, I’m glad to hear that worked. Did the Parent for svchost change with the updates?

LM

No changes
I had to grant one remembered permission to svchost.exe

It’s going to be interesting to see what V.3 makes of it when it is out of Beta.
Thanks again
Philip

No problem, Philip~
