Windows Update Failed to install updates

Hello,

I’m having problems with Comodo’s firewall. I can’t install Windows updates with your firewall after a few time, I always need to reinstall it to fix the problem, this is really annoying. And I can’t update your software, file is missing. I hope you would have an answer to this issue, because I remind you that the aim of computing is to win time, not the inverse.

Thanks in advance

Laurent

Ps: Please excuse me if I made English errors, I am French.

Welcome Phoenix. Your English is fine to me.

Can you tell us more about your system? What OS are you using? Do you have other security program installed? Do you have security program running in the background with CIS? Are you using the Firewall only of the Firewall with AV?

What configuration are you running? What changes did you make to the default settings?

Can you download the updates?

And I can't update your software, file is missing. I hope you would have an answer to this issue, because I remind you that the aim of computing is to win time, not the inverse.

Thanks in advance

Ps: Please excuse me if I made English errors, I am French.

Try this solution from my colleague Dennis2 when the program update is not working. Or do a clean installation of the latest version; get the installer from here.

hi,

Thanks for the fast answer, I am on W7 :
Avira anti-viruses
Comodo firewall (only)
Spybot
Adware

The cfpupdat.exe program allows me to update the firewall, i will try to install Windows Update, I am getting a bit tired, each time after a certain time, updates are impossible, and I must uninstall / reinstall the program, it’s pretty boring. I hope this time if it’s working, I would not have this error.

A priori, it’s working, but maybe in two weeks or more, I would have the same problem, (so problem is not really solved)

Anyway, thank you for your help

Actually, I’m not sure it’s working, my two updates of Windows updates can’t be installed, but I’m not sure this is due to Comodo, I have got a 643 (.NET Framework) error and a 74F (office).

Can you show us the D+ logs of around the time those two last updates failed?

Sometime you will have to be present with an update to click OK. When you are not around to click OK the update will fail.

Also let the Windows Update Readiness Tool run to make sure Windows is properly configured to successfully receive its updates. Running this tool make take up to 20-30 minutes. Just let it run until it is finished.

Here is the log :

I was around, no OK box to clik. I think I might forget to install previous update for .NET framework and I don’t use Excel 2007, I have the 2010 one.
I have not the time to do the Windows Update Readiness tool for now, I will try on Monday.

Thanks

Thanks for the log but it is not the D+ log. I cannot analyse this log by Windows.

See if the system update readiness tool brings you further. After running this tool also let System File Checker run. That way we are pretty sure Windows is functioning properly.

Keep us posted.

Enclosed is the log.

I have installed the Windows Update Readiness Tool but I don’t know how to use it. No problems during the installation. I think errors can come from previous installation of .NET i have not done and some bugs from Office 2007 which I no longer use.

(troll mode on) Windows and its application are plenty of bugs, I am hurry to buy a Mac (troll mode off), yes it’s a closed OS, but you don’t have always problems where you lose a considerable time.

The result of the Windows Update Readiness Tool is stored in the %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log. This inforrmation can be found at the Correction d’erreurs de Windows Update via DISM ou l’outil d’analyse de l’installation conforme des mises à jour du système - Windows Server | Microsoft Learn page I gave in the above (the link in this post links to the French translation of the page).

Check the log to see if it could fix all the reported problems. That’s probably at the bottom. If the CheckSUr.log is not that long you can attach it here and I will if I can analyse it.

What did Windows report after you did the system file check? Did it say it found errors? If it did find errors could it fix them or not?

I asked for the D+ logs of around the time of running Windows Update to see if CIS blocked some stuff.

When you are having a hard time analyzing the logs it is best to seek guidance at Redirecting . I am not very experienced reading the CBS and Checksur logs. The people there know a lot about problems with update and how to analyse it.

Hi,
Thanks for the fast answer,
In the CheckSUr.log we can see :

Summary:
Seconds executed: 755
No errors detected

About the system file check, as I have written in my previous message :

The Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and was able
repair. Details are provided in the CBS.log
windir \ Logs \ CBS \ CBS.log. For example C: \ Windows \ Logs \ CBS \ CBS.log

So, yes there were errors, but Windows fixed them.

I don’t use D+.

If Windows .NET update is not installing for you, then I know from personal anguish experience you must remove .NET completely and reinstall from scratch .NET.

Find .NET uninstaller utility from Microsoft. Also find Windows Installer Cleanup utiity. Run .NET uninstaller cleanup utility. Then run Windows Installr Cleanup utility. Be careful what you uninstall. If you uninstall the wrong thing, you have to reinstall the app. With the Win Installer Cleanup tool remove all traces of .NET you can see.

Then you must install .NET v1.0 You could just download the stand-alone installer from Microsoft, or via add/remove Windows components. It will install off of the CD. After that you can install the .NET updates.

If you’re using Visual Studio and have MS SQL installed ALSO, it gets more complicated.

Sorry. :frowning:

Hi, I have tried to repair .NET, not uninstall, and i retried to install updates. It works fine, even for office.
Just another thing unexplicable in Windows

On Windows XP is won’t install the Dutch language pack for DOTNET 2 if I recall correctly. It never got fixed.

I am also having problems with windows updates and CIS, on several machines.
The computers are all Windows 7 Professional (one 32-bit, and two 64-bit) and the problem first showed itself with service pack 1. At that time on my main machine I was running Comodo firewall and AVG anti-virus, and SP1 failed on several occasions until I uninstalled both programs and then it went on ok.

I then installed CIS (current version 5.5.195786.1383 with signature 9510) and ran with that. All was ok for two weeks until KB2555917, KB2532531 and KB2507938 came out. I was unable to install these Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems no matter what I tried:-

In a normal boot updates failed,
In safe mode updates failed,
Trusted all the files/applications updates failed,
Turned off Comodo updates failed
Uninstalled Comodo updates succeeded.

I also had run the System Update Readiness tool which detected no errors.
Whether the updates were downloaded manually or automatically made no difference, as the install went as far as 15% each time on shutdown, then 20% on boot/reboot before failing and removing changes. I spent several happy hours going in circles trying all the options

All failures gave Error details: Code 80070020.

I have only updated the one machine so far with these updates, as having to uninstall and re-install CIS each time is a bit of a pain.

Hope sometime can suggest something.

Try running AVG removal tool to be absolutely sure it is completely uninstalled. Do the same thing for all security programs you had installed in the past. You can find a list of clean up tools here: ESET Knowledgebase .

Does that help or not? When it does not help can you show a screenshot of D+ logs (View Defense + Events)?

Thanks for the reply.
AVG removal tool downloaded and run when AVG uninstalled, with reboot before trying anything else, no other security programs had been installed. Checked D+ logs on all machines, no reference to failure events, but updates succeeded as soon as Comodo removed.
During updates everything seemed ok until pc reboots to ‘configure windows’, either as a shutdown or as a requested/forced reboot. During the shutdown phase configuration went as far as 15%, then restart when configuration went to 20% before ‘configuration failed, removing changes’ followed by further reboot to windows and notification of failed updates. Is it possible that Comodo is still active during either of these phases - not enough to know it is turned off and log events, but active enough to block the updates? This would explain for me why the updates fail with Comodo installed but there is no log of it.

I have no clue as to what is causing this and why CIS is obviously involved.

I found this Microsoft KB article that may help: Troubleshoot problems updating Windows - Microsoft Support .
