I have received, 2 times, ‘This copy of Windows is not genuine’ in the lower right corner of my desktop display after recent updates to CIS, the latest after 110118 update… This IS a genuine Windows operating system…
AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.4ghz processor, 4gb RAM, Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2, 32 bit
There is an extensive scan when the system shuts down and again when the system reboots lasting as much as 3 - 4 hours +…
Please advise me as to what may be happening here…
TIA

Hello;
Could you tell me if there is any other security software installed, as well as Any Events in Defense+ ? (CIS > Defense+ > Defense+ Events)
If so could you post a screen shot of them please?
Thanks
Jake
Jake,
Thank you for your response…
There are no other security software programs installed except for Windows Firewall which is disabled…
There are no ‘defense’ events to report after 110116 which is prior to this occurrence.
Mod edit : Bolding removed.
I am currently having issues reinstalling Comodo on my windows 7 64bit box … while it worked fine on this laptop with windows xp and 32bit … that’s another issue though
I just want to report that ever since i tried the upgrade in the first place i am getting “your windows is not genuine” at random times too …
Av = avast, windows 7 (when i had Comodo installed) …64bit… working on (reading other forum posts) on getting it reinstalled … was simply trying to go from CFW 5.0 to 5.3 … headaches ever since … but I AM NOT BLAMING Comodo … something else is fishy here

From what i understand from other mods; the fix is just simply restart
if still no fix then go ahead and re-activate
Hope this helps
Jake
Jake,
Once again, I thank you and am appreciative for your timely response and the support provided…
The system restart did clear the ‘This copy of Windows is not genuine’ message on the desktop…
Will this be a continuing issue with future updates to CIS ??
Is there a forum or another method of determining the cause of these occurrences, please ( pls ) ??
I also wish to thank Comodo for the system securities and other softwares provided… I’m sure there are many of us who are grateful… Kudos and good on ya, Comodo Staff, good work…

I’ll ask other mods to comment on this situation
Please await their response; I think that you could re-activate
(Start > Right Click Computer > Properties > is there ‘Activate Windows Now’?)
Thanks
Jake
Jake,
Windows is activated at this time…
Tyvm,

Your Welcome
Jake
Just my thoughts it may not be right answer.
I believe Microsoft now checks your licence for windows every 90 days?
This happen once to me ‘This copy of Windows is not genuine’ on reboot it was gone, I presume the day that I installed CIS was that day.
On first reboot after install CIS for some reason may stop this process running so it fails.
This computer is on a only connect when I need so the connection to Mircosoft was not the problem as this was solved on reboot.
Dennis
Dennis,
Thank you for your thoughts on this ‘This copy of Windows is not genuine’ message on the desktop…
‘This copy of Windows is not genuine’ message on the desktop has occurred twice, both times immediately following recent updates to CIS, both of which required a reboot of the system to complete the installation… The subsequent reboot after the reboot required to complete the installation did clear the ‘This copy of Windows is not genuine’ message…
I am waiting for further recurrences of the event to determine if what appears to be a pattern will continue…
At this time, it seems there are no definite conclusions as to why and how this event occurred, or if it will continue to occur…
There is at least one other occurrence of a similar event mentioned above… Are there more mentions of such similar events ??
Is there a fix to stop these events if they are indeed caused by some process of the updates to CIS ??
The lengthy, 3 - 4 hours +, scans upon shut down AND/or start up of this machine ( has occurred on either, and, a couple of times, both ) seem to have ceased by unchecking/disabling the option to ‘scan memory on start up’ wherever it is an option in CIS… Please keep in mind when considering scan time utilized, there are a bit more than 3tb ( yes, 3tb + ) of files on this system…
Please keep me advised of developments with the issue at hand as well as similar issues, if you would…
Thank you again, Dennis and Jake, and Xmetalfanx for your additional information…

Ok, I am having issues with installing 5.3, but I will make another thread for that … I am so sorry that I do not have the URL I found via-Google, but it turns out I was getting that message even with no Comodo installed … for some reason it SEEMS TO BE related to a certain windows update (KB971*****) (I unfornunatly cant even remember the full update #) … a different user on a different forum posted that it seems to be related to "MS anti-piracy … getting a bit too senstive and marking legit copies and keys as “not genuinue” … I removed that update like a number of people on that forums did and like them I have not gotten a single message anymore … I will see if i can find the link and post back later … again … .sorry I dont have the references now

I was getting that message even with no Comodo installed ... for some reason it SEEMS TO BE related to a certain windows update (KB971*****)Do you have windows 7??
yes, Win7 64bit … will look for those URLs later
AMD Athlon 64 x 2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.4ghz processor, 4gb RAM, Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2, 32 bit here…
Xmetalfanx,
The most recent Microsoft update found for this system with a KB971644, the KB971*** prefix, was received/installed in early March 2010… Thanks for bringing this to our attention…
Upon a googlle search, found references to Microsoft update KB971033/Windows 7 with notes of uninstalling and rerunning Windows Activation to regain a legit status with Microsoft… I did not research this in depth, however…
Good luck with your own issues, Xmetalfanx… Thanks for your interests here…
At this point, until further information is revealed, and/or a continuing of similar ‘events’, I will be maintaining a current ‘tentatively ok’ status…
To be sure, the interests and support of all are appreciated…
Many thanks,
M
For All,
FYI, 110211 I installed Windows Vista cumulative updates which included Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool…
Immediately after installation reboot the same symptoms of extraordinarily long scans upon shutdown and/or restarts AND ‘Windows is not genuine’ reappeared… Please recall there is 3+tb of storage on this system for scan lengths…
I did a SYSTEM RESTORE to remove the updates, reinstalled the updates minus the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, rebooted the system… Viola, initially the system seems to be responding normally…
Will advise if there are further effects which turn up…
Many thanks to all that have been involved…
