Hail All…
Completely new to Comodo…using it since Thanksgiving… Love it … BUT!!..
I looked all over these forums for the answer to this one… i.e. Where does cfpupdat.exe save it’s updates to.?
I’m sitting here looking at 67.1 mb of downloaded update in so far …
I understand from my researches that this is a major AV engine fix and we’re looking at 96 mb total… but when I allowed this download to start, there was NO indication of what I was letting myself in for… Now, I have to let it continue and HOPE that the connection doesn’t drop before the download is complete… !!!
Next time, something like this could be a deal breaker…
I have already been through a 100 mb + update of signatures a week or so ago… That one failed on the 1st try and then I squawked and got a link to download the signatures separately.
I now understand that there are two parts to the updating function… regular daily signature updates and then updates to the program itself, like today’s…
Incremental signature updates of “1kb to 140 kb” aside, having links available to download and save these major ( 50mb+) files separately via a pause-able download manager is absolutely essential to anyone still stuck with dial-up access…
We shouldn’t have to dig for them or ask in the forums either… Said links should ALWAYS be the first post in the Config section here…
The idea is to have backups filed away so that when one has to reinstall software, (XP, need I say more?) one doesn’t have to spent days downloading these updates again and again.
So, who can help?

I stand corrected on one point… I see that the link to the BASE.CAV updates is in the FAQ’s under AV Help
Took a while to find it… :-[
And I suppose that the link on the public site for the CIS program itself would be to the monster I’m still downloading now… (86.9mb at this point) … but the rest of my query stands… I don’t want to have to download this thing twice just to be able to access it again at a future date…
The link provided in the FAQ supports resuming. So, it can be done in separate steps when needed.
Hey Eric… Thanks for replying so quick… but you didn’t address the question I asked…
What follows are my observations… my question is restated at the end…
I lived through the 102.9 mb download ordeal (AGAIN!), my “About” section now reads …
Product Version: 3.13.125662.579
Virus Signature Database version: 3422 (woooot!!)
and I have learned a valuable lesson … I shall never fall for the “would you like to update now” message again…
Fellow dialup newbies, here’s my hard won knowledge…
My research on these forums strongly suggests that the updating functions of Comodo Internet Security need some fundamental improvement work… like stating the file size that will be downloaded?? … and providing the “administrator option” to save said file at a location of our choosing?? and taming the way the updating process completely hogs CPU cycles to the exclusion of all other functions while it is running??.. Well, judging by the amount of complaints on these issues I’ve seen, I’m sure the programmer team is well aware of these issues and I hear ver. 4 is on the way, but in the mean time, what do we do??
Work around, of course… Here’s what I suggest…
-
If the program itself wants to update, as opposed to just the virus signatures, go to the public area of Comodo’s site and set up thy downloader to get the latest version of the program… The download there is currently 36 mb for the 32 bit ver. … that way you can save a backup where you want for future reference.
-
If the signatures want to update, check these forums to see if there is a giant signature update in the pipeline… BEFORE you click on that “update virus database” trigger… If there is a major database reset in the offing… and my researches suggest that this is an all-too-frequent event … go to the AV FAQ’s section of these forums and set up thy downloader to get the latest version of the Base.cav file from there … you’ll still have to download a massive file, but at least you’ll know where it is saving to and will be able to access it should you need to re-install down the line…
AND you wiill still get to suffer through the CPU hogging “incremental” signature update too… I got two additional ones after the big boy actually… But downloading the main monster via the link will help save you what I’m trying to sort out now…
Which is…
Eric… Am I correct in saying that this huge file I just downloaded automatically replaces the Bases.cav file in the Comodo scanners directory??? ???
Thanks
