virus signature database is not updating

Hi,

I recently installed Comodo, ran it and on the side it said: “the virus signature database is NOT up-to-date”. I click the update button and a window appeared stating that it is updating the database. At about 3% in however it informed me that the update has failed. I am pretty sure that it is Comodo related as I can update malware bytes and clamwin fine, I have noticed that malware bytes usually gets knocked out by virus’.

Here is some information regarding the system Comodo is installed on. If you require any more information please let me know.

OS version: Windows 7
CIS version: 5.3.181415.1237
current AV DB version database: 1

Does you browser have proxy settings?
No

Can you use CIS, More, Check for updates without trouble?
Yes, it seems to update fine.

Can you verify CIS logs and check Tasks log to see what the error id is that’ recorded on AV updates?
0x80072efd

Do you know if you system has ever been infected?
It has never been infected.

If you run Hitmanpro does it complain about proxy settings on your system?
Yes, it says internet explorer is using a proxy

Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking at my post

What does Hitman Pro report about proxy settings?

I assume you are not using a proxy server to connect to the web. Is that correct?

Can you see if there is a proxy set on your system? Go to Control Panel → Internet Options → Connections → Local Area Network (LAN) settings.

That is correct, I am not using a proxy server to connect to the internet.

Hitman Pro reports that Internet Explorer is using a proxy, however I did correct it using hitman, later scans have not reported the proxy problem again.

After following your instructions, I can confirm that there is no proxy set on the system.

And still you cannot update the av database?

After all of that I am still unable to update…

May be left overs of previously installed security programs are in the way. Try using removal tools for those programs. Here is a list of removal tools for common av programs: ESET Knowledgebase .

Otherwise do a Google search with terms “removal tool” and * name of product or vendor*.

When removing possible left overs of previously installed programs does not bring a solution can you post a Hijack This log?

Thanks EricJH, I shall use the removal tools and I shall post my HT log on Monday…

Hi, I’ve been having the exact same problem as the thread author here, and have been following the same steps to the end of the thread. I ran Hitman Pro, which found multiple traces of proxy servers running, and removed them all but mine still won’t update. I also completely uninstalled all previous AV’s. I ran a HijackThis! scan, here’s the logfile.

I just did, and the update still isn’t working. :frowning:

Did you try the suggestions to run removal tools for all the security programs you had installed in the past? Please do. That is an important step; sometimes installer leave behind drivers or services and can give all sort of unexpected behaviours.

Try this,

Open regedit and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\

Check the entry “Proxy Enable”. (it will either be set to 0 or 1, it should be set to 0)

Check to see if the entry “Proxy Server” exists, if it does, delete it.

Restart the computer and then reopen regedit and look to see if those entires come back.

I tried the suggestion of L holden, but apparently it does come back even after the reboot.

Fix these entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: uTorrentBar Toolbar - {bf7380fa-e3b4-4db2-af3e-9d8783a45bfc} - C:\Program Files (x86)\uTorrentBar\tbuTor.dll

After that, open Command Prompt and type this command:
netsh winsock reset catalog

I followed your suggestion to the letter deadman, but unfortunately the update problem still exists. Can you enlighten me what was the intended action of your suggestion?

May be left overs of previously installed security programs are in the way. Try using removal tools for those programs. Here is a list of removal tools for common av programs: ESET Knowledgebase .

Otherwise do a Google search with terms “removal tool” and * name of product or vendor*.

That’s actually the first thing I tried. Thing is, I don’t have any other AV that I installed.

Where can i download the latest full AV database? bring a solution?

That’s exactly what was there.
The Proxy Enable was set to 1, the Proxy Server was there, so I reset the Proxy Enable to 0 and deleted the Proxy Server key. When I restarted the computer, the Proxy Enable value went back to 1 and the Proxy Server key came back. There was another one there called “Proxy Override (Type: REG_SZ, Data: )”, but I left it alone since you didn’t mention it.
