V-Engine + Sandboxie = more than 1 V icon on the tray bar:

Hi. It’s my first time here, and I am so tickled pink with Comodo that I didn’t want to bring the following 3 items up in this forum, but:

  1. To submit a ticket I had to fill in an Order Number or Domain Name, neither of which I am aware of having. ???

  2. It looks like the VerificationEngine doing its thing in Sandboxie engenders multiple little VE icon’s, which can then be found in various places. Two appeared on my tray bar, and three in my tray bar list; two as Active, one as Inactive. After each reboot, only one of the two on the tray bar would be left, but the three on the list were still present.
I noticed that browsing un-sandboxed did not create this multiplication of the little guys, only doing it sandboxed, so it obviously is related to the intimate entanglement of VE with Sandboxie on my laptop. But then again, what can one expect with two of such potential and fruitful partners in the beginning of their passionate relationship…:-*
Reason all the more to intervene, preferably by cooperation of both Grant Parents of these marvelous Protectors of our electronic brains, to teach their respective Offspring a thing or two about each other, particularly practicing planned parenthood; one child only please.
The other Offspring of Comodo works wonderfully together with the virtual space of Sandboxie (also a freebie) whose sandbox keeps all surfing and email action strictly separate from one’s hard disk. 8)

  3. Is there a way to delete obsolete icons from the tray bar list? I was able to free all VE picto’s from their confinement there with the aid of my last back-up, but there are still orphans on that list who’s parents passed over a long time ago, and I dread to back up that far into the past… :o

That’s odd. All you should have to do is to register at http://support.comodo.com (your forum credentials don’t count) and then you should just be able to lodge a ticket. can you grab a screenshot of where you’re having this problem and I’ll forward it to support.

VE operates as a windowless full screen application overlaying the explorer shell. I would think the multiple instances of VE are caused by Sandboxie replicating and segregating the shell to run apps in its protected environment.

To eliminate this would require extensive rewriting of one or the other.

Good question - I’ve never looked into this. Have you tried googling “remove past system tray icons”? A killerinfo search produced this

This would seem to fit the bill, but only edit your registry is you’re comfortable doing so.

Hi panic.
Ok, I just found out that I only have to fill in an Order Number or Domain Name when I choose “Other…” in the “Select Product” bar. So if I would have chosen “PC Security Software” -which my question was about- I could have just submitted the ticket without having to fill in those data.

About the V-Engine and Sandboxie: So it seems a choice between using one or the other. But luckily it is not really; Since I only go to my e-Bank and Pay Pal on ocasions, all I have to do those times is click on the V-Engine Setup icon on my memory stick > have it installed in a few seconds > click on the tray icon of Sandboxie > click “Temporarily Disable Forced Programs” > and -now un-sandboxed- go do my business. After that I de-install the V-Engine untill a next ocasion. Fast and easy, getting the best of both marvelous programs.

Last issue; removing obsolete icons from tray bar list. Thank you for looking up that info for me. I am not only new on this forum, but also on the pc, so I feel like a passenger on a 747 invited to sit in the cockpit -on the pilot’s chair- asking the Captain how to fly this thing…

Hi again panic,
I kept knocking at heaven’s door and -after dark blue screens appeared during reboots for 2 seconds, saying something about Windows restoring the system from a “serious error”, and imitating the deep bass sound from “Jaws”, I was finally let in; all the old obsolete icons are gone! :BNC

What confused me was the small -I translate from Dutch- “Make new task” window with “regedit” in its bar that appeared after I clicked on “New task” in the Taskmaster. I finally gave up doing anything with it and -ignoring it- just rebooted, and voilá…
Besides posting a link to this blog on the (Dutch) HijackThis forum -where I highly recomended both Comodo and Sandboxie- I’ll send your link to Andy Rathbone -the author of the Windows for Dummies books. I had asked him about this, but he mailed me that as far as he knew there was no easy way to do it (he didn’t tell me about a difficult way either though, but -in fairness- he did once discover and tell me that to change the spaces between the sentences in WordPad you press Ctrl+1, 2, or 5, for single, double, or 1.5 spaces.)
Thanks again!

P.S.

Maybe I made an error, or I misunderstand it, but after following the method of deleting obsolete icons as given by the above link, I got increasingly more error warnings, forced closings, and crashes. Finally I did a system restore (should have used a back up; now I have to re-install some things) and tried again, this time using a slightly different method that I found on the same site. The only difference is that the above link -almost at the end- gives “go to the applications tab”, while the one I tried this time says “click on File.”

I got rid of the icons again, and so far no problems. But I’ll give it some time to see if it stays that way before I post it anywhere else or tell anyone about it. Anyway, here is “the other method” (Use at your own risk.): How To clear the Past Items or Icons list in the TaskBar

Four days have past now since I wrote the above, and it seems to work fine. First I got a small window appearing on my screen every time after reboot -asking me if I wanted Windows to search for a cd or software with Lnk.- and following it I read that some AV’s don’t allow those changes without protest (good thing probably). Not understanding the techno on how to adjust that, I simply re-installed CAV and BOClean, and they accepted the previously changed settings of my machine, so that solved it.
