Update error........

I manually update daily Boclean by right clicking it and “check for update”. Never ever had issues. Until right now. It says this:

Error!!! Not connected. Check connection or firewall settings.

Obvioulsy I am connected online and everything. Is it a temp Comodo issue right now or is it a problem with my pc?

Please can someone help?

i have seen that update “error” before… it must be a temporary problem of some sort… if the updater was working for you up until now, i wouldn’t worry about it… just try updating again later…

i am assuming that you haven’t changed anything with your computer before the problem started… i read a thread recently that said that running symantec’s cleanup utility can cause update problems, in “windows vista”… but, it can easily be fixed by restoring a regkey…

Yeah. Nothing has been changed as of late at all. Im on XP home edition.

i just wanted to say that i am not seeing problems with the BOC updates so i would think that you shouldn’t be seeing them, either, if you are still seeing them… if you are still having problems with the BOC updates, i would double-check your firewall-rules to see if the BOC updater is blocked from connecting out… incidentally, the BOC updater uses the “FTP” protocol which means that, unlike many updaters, it doesn’t use “port 80” for the updates, so it should be allowed to use “any” ports for the updates, in your firewall-rules…

i don’t use the comodo firewall, but, from what i read about it, it looks like, with the comodo firewall, you have to “allow” TCP traffic in both directions, both “in” and “out”… so, that might be an issue if you are using the comodo firewall… don’t let my mentioning this confuse you…

(:WAV) hi, i have no prob updating BOC. if you’re running CFP as well, try looking on CFP “security” tab ==> application monitor. make sure the “BOC4UPD.exe” is allowed. hope it helps. and i think there are many posts here about BOC update error, maybe you can find the solution there.

Ganda

Also remember that BOC uses IE’s internet connection settings. Some users have reported problems wherein IE was set to “work offline.” Deselecting that status in IE resolved the issue.

LM

well, if IE’s settings play a part, you could also go to IE’s “advanced” settings (IE/tools/options/advanced) and check/enable “use passive FTP”… maybe that will help…

I think it was infact a update issue with Comodo. If updated fine this morning.

Okay, thanks for the update. I’ll close the topic. If you need it reopened, just PM a Moderator (please include a link) and we’ll be glad to do so.

KoRn,

Per your PM, I’ve unlocked the thread. You may post about your continuing issue.

Tnx,

LM

Thanks LM for reopening it for me. Onto my problem now. Last week I had disabled netbios over tcp/ip. All this time it was on the default setting. Which someone advised me to disable asap. As its something I dont need and its a security risk having it on. Fast forward to a few days after. I started having this Boclean update issue. Along with windows update issue. It would not let me do the updates. It gave me some kind of error. After closing Comodo firewall. Boclean updated fine and so did windows update. Turn back on my firewall. And the errors came back. So here is the weird part.

I was crusing the net yesterday. And a pop up came up from the firewall. A services.exe or something. I accepted and everything is updating fine again for now. In my firewall log. I had alot of red x warnings that said services could not connect to port 80. And some others. Now that I let service through once again. Those are gone now. So I dont know what caused all this hoopla. If you could please leave this thread open for a couple more days to make sure everything will still be ok. Would appreciate it. I will report back. Do I need to configure my firewall a certain way for this does not happen again?

Ok guys. Here is my log from Comodo firewall. Im having the update issue again and with windows update again. Keep in mind. This only started happening when I disabled netbios over tcp/ip. As I was told its uneeded and a security risk. How do I go about fixing this making cpf happy again?

Check in CFP’s Application Monitor for a “block” entry on svchost.exe. This is the Windows process that is responsible for Win Updates, DHCP lease, system time updates, and a host of other things as well. It is quite critical that this be allowed internet access to (at minimum) destination ports 53,80,443,121.

korn, you will just have to figure out how to adjust the firewall’s settings so that it doesn’t block some FILES from “running”… at least you know to keep an eye on what the firewall is doing…

incidentally, i have seen where people have had the same type of problem with the “zone alarm” firewall, and i imagine that people have also had the same type of problem with the kaspersky firewall and with the “outpost” firewall…

these firwalls are powerful, but they can be restrictive, too…

LM,

I went and took a peak at what your talking about. No signs of svchost.exe at all. I have seen it there before though. I think this has to do with me disabling netbios over tcp/ip?

korn, i have been disabling “netbios over TCP”, in “network connections” settings, for a few years, and it has never caused me any trouble with updating BOC, so i don’t think that would be causing you any problems with updating BOC…

Disabling netbios (which is a good thing) won’t disable svchost.exe, nor would it cause you to have those Block entries in CFP’s logs. redwolfe’s correct, too, in that netbios should not have an impact on BOC updating. For that matter, neither should svchost.exe being blocked; the log entries may not be related to the BOC problem, but it’s worth looking at.

If you do not have any AppMon entries for svchost.exe (as per the Blocked log entries), then you must have answered a popup with Block/Deny but not “Remember.” This will mean that the block is for session only (ie, temporary). Reboot your computer and that problem should resolve.
