Unable to connect through TrustConnect IP

Support has had a ticket on this for about a week without a response. Maybe somebody here can help.

Scenario: TrustConnect “connects” properly to the CTC server and it is issued an IP address on the CTC server’s subnet. The system tray icon shows “green.”

However, no traffic is passed via that IP. The “TAP-Win32 Adapter V9” shows up on the PC’s network adapter list but it does not present an IP address, just a red X. I’ve tried it both WiFi-only and wired-only with identical results.

The salient portion of the CTC log is:

Sun Nov 07 10:22:45 2010 [ComodoVPNS-1] Peer Connection Initiated with 75.127.65.162:443
Sun Nov 07 10:22:47 2010 TAP-WIN32 device [Local Area Connection 4] opened: \.\Global{2B01BA02-065E-477F-AB7F-DE02D424D991}.tap
Sun Nov 07 10:22:47 2010 NOTE: could not get adapter index for {2B01BA02-065E-477F-AB7F-DE02D424D991}
Sun Nov 07 10:22:47 2010 Notified TAP-Win32 driver to set a DHCP IP/netmask of 172.20.0.5/255.255.255.0 on interface {2B01BA02-065E-477F-AB7F-DE02D424D991} [DHCP-serv: 172.20.0.0, lease-time: 31536000]
Sun Nov 07 10:23:22 2010 Warning: route gateway is not reachable on any active network adapters: 172.20.0.1
The route addition failed: Either the interface index is wrong or the gateway does not lie on the same network as the interface. Check the IP Address Table for the machine.

The fatal error seems to be at the point “could not get adapter index for {…”

This is a vanilla HP/Compaq notebook PC running WinXP/SP3. The local DHCP client service is running (a check recommended from the OpenVPN site).

An additional data point. While the TAP-Win32 adapter does not have an IP assigned, it does see non-IP traffic on the 172.20.0.0 subnet. When I sniff it with WireShark I can see the occasional ARP request from the 172.20.0.1 server. So, it’s there, and alive, just not addressable or routable.

Thoughts?

Would you please provide the output of commands ipconfig /all and route PRINT before and after connection? And make shure that you launch TrustConnect with administrator’s rights.

Can do. All done with an admin-enabled account (like most everybody else on WinXP  )

I’ll be offline for a couple of days, on travel (which is why I was trying to get CTC up and running…)

However, there is no TAP-Win32 adapter in your system’s network interfaces list. Possible, you hadn’t installed it at the TrustConnect installation. Please, remove the TrustConnect from your system and re-install it. Look at the attached screenshot. When you get this warning, you should click “Continue anyway” to install TAP-adapter, otherwise TrustConnect won’t operate properly.

Yes, I did the “continue anyway” to each of the dialog boxes during the installation. Just to be sure, I uninstalled CTC, rebooted, ran the Comodo System Cleaner, robooted, and re-installed CTC.

Under Start | Settings | Control Panel | Network Settings I can see a “TAP-Win32 Adapter V9” with the label “Local Area Connection 5” (the previous label was “Local Area Connection 4”, as expected).

However, as you note, it does not appear in the output from “ipconfig /all,” either before or after initiating a connection to the CTC server. Curious, eh?

May be, the TAP-adapter was disabled? In this case it won’t appear in the output from “ipconfig /all” and “route PRINT”. Please, check it in context menu (mouse right-click) and make shure that for this adapter in “Properties”->“Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties” option “Obtain an IP address automatically” is set.

Yes, it is set for “obtain an IP address automatically.” I have also tried to manually set the CTC-assigned 172.20.0.x IP address without any effect (still won’t take traffic or show up on ipconfig or route) but it is returned to automatic when I finish fiddling with it.

It also seems to be enabled (see attached jpg), at least insofar as the available option is to dis-able it.

Additional info: When I use the right-click context menu to disable the Win32-TAP adapter while CTC is connected, the CTC connection is dropped immediately and the CTC error dialog-box is displayed. Iit seems that, at some level at least, there is some connection between the TAP adapter and CTC.

This is what is in the log when the TAP adapter is disabled while CTC is connected:
Fri Nov 12 18:34:52 2010 read from TUN/TAP : The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request. (code=995)

Found the problem.

CTC uses some networking components from TamoSoft. I’ve had a licensed copy of TamoSoft’s CommView installed for years and apparently that installation interfered in some way with the initialization of the CTC connection.

After uninstalling CommView and CTC, rebooting, and then re-installing CTC I now get connections properly routed through the CTC IP.
