Dont really need to update it yearly cause every year a new version comes out. By the time NIS 2009 is expired then NIS 2010 will be out. Al the info you need is at the Symantec site.
Yes, but they usually allow discounted upgrades if I rememeber right. the site doesn’t give very much info, that is why I asked.
The Staples ad shows a $20 rebate if you are upgrading
Right now anyone with a valid license for NAV 2005-2009 and NIS 2005-2009 can upgrade for free.
No doubt that the AV component is less than perfect, But I wonder why the tester would post these comments?
;
Firewall vulnerable to "leak test" techniques and exploits.
More impact on performance than expected.
And then in the same post,
If you need free security, get the firewall alone and add avast! or AVG for free virus/spyware protection. Why would they reccomend the firewall if it's vulnerable to leaktests and exploits ??? ??? They said the impact on performance was more than they expected.
They Also reccomend AVG\Avast! and in an above post.
What’s with adding AVG to the mix?!
We all know the performance levels of avg\avast! are far slower than CIS in terms of resource usage.

Which leaktests are we vulnerable to? (thats news to me (:NRD) )
I would bet that we are not! Unless the user has turned off its defense!

Yes exactly… Does anyone have an account for that website?
Well, I assume that the tester made 1 GIANT mistake. He had the leaktools on his desktop and set Defense+ to cleanpc mode. He would have done the malware scanning in the beginning, but he would have unchecked them. This way, Comodo will pass only half of the leaktest or so. But that’s NOT FAIR ! He used Zonealarm on the highest mode !!!
For the antivirus, he’s using rather older sigs, which CAVS lacks…
And the performance, he’s or using a VM or he has a clash with another product
Greetings and don’t pay attention to that article…

They have probably paid a lot of money to win this test. That is the way it usually is. Show me more tests where Norton won, then we can talk.
It’s not really about winning or losing. I think Vettetech would agree… But who knows.

That’s easy! There is at least one, which has been reported a few times. I know I did, for 2 times.
WebCamLogger Test Program (http://www.zemana.com/list/list.asp?ktgr_id=425)
I just checked and D+ still isn’t able to block it. I mean, D+ does alert me and I block the 2 alert it gives, but still can see myself on the screen!
I have D+ set to Safe Mode.
Don’t take this wrong, but perhaps, you (Comodo people) should pay more attention to the Leak Testing/Attacks/ Vulnerability Research board. Just a thought…
We, users, do our best to try to make of CFP the best of all firewalls with HIPS, but you guys don’t seem that very interested. Or don’t you find that result of importance?

This is the result provided by Secunia in what comes to exploits. I agree with them when they say that, if a vendor claims they offer a full internet security, then they should cover this as well. Symantec is the one passing more tests than any other. About Secunia Research | Flexera
av-comparatives gives Norton 2009 99% of detection rate. Others only say good things about it.
Symantec has a long experience in the security field. The only problem is that for a very long time their products were heavy, but they finally woke up! Symantec products never had poor detection rates (not that I know of). The only problem was always the resource usage. That problem is over.
+1
As for the leaktest, that’s the ability for information to “leak” out the computer.
What possible security hazzard could a "ebcam logger"have on your pc? It’s no threat if the info can’t be sent back and forth to the sender\reciever.
Your missing the point Kyle. The web cam test is a spy test. What if malware took control over your web cam and now people are spying on you.
Matt is going to review CIS on Friday…how will it do against real time infections. Who knows. NIS 2009 did ant awesome job according to Matt.

Although the release info don’t mention PoC anywhere Debut Video Capture Software does the same thing even better as it records also audio. This is not the only software like this and there are lot of freeware around.
Besides that WebCamLogger PoC work in a totally different way from keylogger PoCs. In fact it usually asks to select the capture device on first run and it is not able to capture webcam output if another program uses the webcam.
In the same vein I guess also windows sndrec32.exe could be considered a PoC and it is also able to capture audio when other apps are recording the mic output.
Even if I’m inclined to think that adding more trapped events could prove useful I don’t think this is a big omission and by far I consider the audio recording protection more important than the webcam one.
In fact most webcams usually come with a lens cap to possibly prevent such cases but there is no way to disable the webcam mic other than disconnecting the webcam.
The clipboard protection could also prove useful and it looks it will be added in future releases but this doesn’t mean such kind of protection would be enough to address more specific cases.
AKAIK most of these exploits are based on BO and this means that CMF or Comodo Safesurf can prevent them if the built in MS DEP protection did’t do it already since is effective in more general cases.

Waiting for Friday then. I hope we’ll not be hugely disappointed
It wil do excellent if he sets Defense+ up correctly…
@Vette in regards to spy.
Course I know what he means about spying, But the “Malware” can record me hopping out of the shower for all I care, If it can’t phone home then it’s not a threat…
Matt shoudn’t test D+. It woudn’t be fair. He should install only AV
He should test both scenarios. CIS with AV and CIS w/o AV.
