Steam games online - Regular lag / freezing / pauses / stuttering

I have inadvertently posted a similar message in the feedback forum, apologies…

When playing steam games with comodo installed, I get regular lockups for a second or two. I am pretty sure now that it is Comodo that is causing it - I have played without it running (exited in taskbar, killed cmdagent.exe in task manager) and don’t get the problem.

Don’t know why or how this is happening - any advice would be appreciated, would like to fix rather than uninstall comodo.

cheers!

Hmmm, may have fixed it - I ticked “skip advanced security checks” under applicaion monitor for all instances of hl.exe, hl2.exe and steam.exe - not sure why that would work, actually…?

Too early to tell if that worked, but will keep testing…

Nope, turning off advanced security checks doesn’t fix it …

???

I notice there’s a few days between posts, BadZen… was it working and then quit, or is this the first chance you’ve gotten to test and post back?

At any rate, would you please do the following:

Go to Activity/Logs. Right-click and select “clear all logs.”

Run steam. As soon as you experience the lags, go back to Activity/Logs.

Right-click and select “Export to HTML.” Save the file, and reopen it. Highlight the entries around the time of the lags, and Copy. Then Paste those into your next post here. You can mask your personal/external IP address with “x” for privacy. That will show us if CFP is blocking something…

I also had problems with POS-Steam.
When you start Steam it makes a ridiculous number of connections
and Comodo interpreted the reply-packets as a port-scan/flood
thus blocking the 'attacker" . I checked the “allow all activities for this application”
and the “allow invisible connections” for all the HL/Steam exes and that works for me .

Ah yes, work is the curse of the drinking classes, after all…
I will attend to your suggestions and get back to you

Here’s the log - nothing seems to have registered in-game with lockups (eg locked up at 2130), but this is all I got…may be on steam startup???

Try creating this rule in Network Monitor.

Go to Rule ID 5 (the bottom Block & Log rule), right-click and select Add/Add Before. It will be built as follows:

Action: Allow
Protocol: ICMP
Direction: In
Source: Any
Destination: Any (or your IP)
Details: ICMP Port Unreachable

OK. A reboot would be good to clear the memory and set the new rule.

See if that works. This sort of scenario is common with p2p applications as well, where there are a large number of connections.

I’ll give it a go! Thanks

Should I use allow “host unreachable” as well? Getting that in the logs now when I start steam…

In your position, I would. I’d keep adding and checking the logs until it worked. Or just cut to the chase and allow all ICMP. There seems to be a general consensus amongst security experts that this is not a risk, and that any suggestion of such risk is hype.

Personally, I’d do it one at a time, even tho that may take more time. That way (even if later I decide to allow all of it) I know which ones specifically are required. But I like to know stuff like that…

LM

Thanks again - been away for the week…

I’ll have a go at it.
Cheers!
