<SOLVED> Antivirus Update fails on brand new install of Windows XP SP3

I just installed Windows XP SP 3 on a brand new computer. After the initial setup with drivers etc. I installed the Free Comodo Internet Security, the only problem is that once I try to update the Antivirus I get the following error>

“Failed to update the virus signature database. Please check your internet connection and try again later.”

I tried to do the following>

 1. Uninstalled CIS
 2. Restart the computer
 3. Ran the cleanup script
 4. Did a registry sweep to find leftovers
 5. Restarted the computer
 6. Reinstalled CIS

And the problem still remains that it starts then at 5% it freezes.

I tried to monitor the internet access and it looks like it is not even trying to get online.

Any solutions for this kind of problem?

What version of CIS do have installed?

Miscellaneous / About

Also can you access the internet with IE as CIS uses the settings from IE.

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Thanks.

I downloaded the new version from the Comodo website today 3.11.108364.552

I can browse with both IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari on this new install.

Kevin

I have found the solution myself.

This newly installed computer has IE8, so I tried to add http://*.comodo.com to the trusted sites and that solved the problem. Right now it\s at 30% download where it used to die after 5%. I did a test update prior to adding the trusted site and there was a difference.

Hmmm… This is interesting. It shouldn’t make a difference because CIS isn’t actually using IE for the updates. It only looks at the connection settings to see how you connect to the internet. A trusted zone on your browser shouldn’t impact the update in the slightest.

I have a similar problem. When the updater gets to 16% (always 16%), I get:

“Error 113: Update could not be completed. Seems Internet connection lost halfway during update download. Please check your Internet connection and retry.”

There nothing wrong with my internet connection that I can see. Everything else works well.

My Product Version is 3.0.22.349

I am using XP with SP3.

Hello Ian,

Where did you find that product version ?
Latest CIS version is 3.12.x.560 you can find this on Misc, About.

You are using an older version of Comodo Firewall. There are several sites that still offer this version from 2008.

If you want to update Comodo Firewall the only way to go is to uninstall your old Comodo Firewall and so a clean install of v3.12. You cannot not export your old configuration to the new version. Too many things have changed. Get the latest v3.12 here: https://forums.comodo.com/feedbackcommentsannouncementsnews_cis/comodo_internet_security_312111745560_released-t45362.0.html .

In that case it’s not an Antivirus update that fails but a Program Update, technically this question would be in the wrong post if this is the case…

I had similar problem and I try uninstall clean old version of the comodo 3.8 to 3.11 and 3.12 but both did not work.
It still said " failure to update …"
I am using XP 3 windows and I can browse using IE, firefox and opera.
Did i miss something here? Can anyone help me to solve my problem cause i have been struggling with this comodo for the last two days.
Thank you.

Hello Ten,

Do i understand it correctly that you are running CIS version 3.12.x.560 now and that your AV database won’t update ?

You get failure to update… with a 5% indicator right ?

Can you check to see if on the GUI, Misc, Settings, Connections anything is configured for proxy server usage ?

And if you use a proxy server can you configure it here ?

Hi Ronny,

Yeah i tried reinstall one by one for both 3.11 and 3.12 but it just stuck 5% or 30% then i get that failure to update. Now, I am using 3.12 that right.
I am sorry that i am newbie here so i am not sure what are those (GUI,Misc,Setting,Connection,Proxy server) How do i locate them and what am i suppose to check and configure those.
Just to let u know that i am using my computer for personal use only.
This Comodo also has been working fine until i updated xp3 and updated comodo which took 20 minutes to download. So i am not sure whether it was antivirus database or later version of comodo that i updated.
Since that time the comodo cannot update antivirus anymore.

Okay the 5% is a connection problem, which can be numerous things, like DNS look up failure, traffic blocked by firewall, etc…also i have seen this behavior on infected systems.

Are you installing CIS on a virus free system or could it be infected ?

I am sorry that i am newbie here so i am not sure what are those (GUI,Misc,Setting,Connection,Proxy server) How do i locate them and what am i suppose to check and configure those.
Just double click on the white shield in your systray on the bottom left somewhere near the clock. Now click on the Misc button and select Settings, now select the Connections tab. If you use a proxy please configure it's settings here.

If you first install CIS 3.12 it doesn't contain a real AV database, that has to be downloaded first and is 105MB large this can take a while to download depending on the connection speed with internet. You can find more details about it here

What’s your internet connection speed ?
