It’s a mega-thread on wilders about it and developers are talking there too.
I very recently started looking into such programs and today gave AX64 Time Machine a try… was disappointed when I realized I needed a second hard-drive in order to use it, and I don’t have a second hard-drive. (I guess I could partition my SSD but I’m not so hot on that idea.)
So yeah I went back to Shadow Defender, I just don’t like some things, like having to reboot to exit Shadow Mode and a few other things.
I’m looking forward to Comodo Time Machine (If it’s still in development) however since it seems to have been pushed up for so long I don’t expect it to be released any time soon or even this or next year.
So I’m still trying to find a similar program.
What I would like is to be able to enter such a mode like Shadow Mode and then commit all files without having to restart or turn off Shadow Mode, guess that’s not possible (at least not without paying yearly for a software or having to pay for updates)
Yes, because it’s an imaging/snapshot hybrid program. If you’re not backing up your machine, you are playing with fire and not Shadow Defender nor CTM is going to save you. Personally, I prefer my snapshots to be on another drive. External USB drives are very cheap nowadays. More room to save more snapshots.
Very true, I didn’t realize that imaging was such a big part of the program, I thought it was something you could choose if you wanted to use it or if you wanted to you could choose to only use snapshot, but it seems they were both combined which I guess is a great idea, just not for my system at the moment.
When dealing with important things that I can’t lose etc; I encrypt them and back them up to several cloud storage services, and to my thumb-drive; however I don’t backup my whole computer, mostly because of the fact that I rather re-install the whole thing and get a fresh start if something goes wrong.
Well I’ve had two external USB 3.0 hard-drives… both have died. The latest drive claims some CRC error thing which I haven’t been able to fix, can’t even format the drive. The first drive had its connector broken somehow, it was pulled out of the external hard-drive case when I was going to pull the cable out… So I’m not too hot on external USB hard-drives anymore, besides they’re so loud. I was thinking about getting a NAS, until I realized the prices.
I want a silent external hard-drive that is also cheap, fast and can hold around ~3.0TB… I’m out of luck 88)
I have a Western Digital MyBook 3TB and it is extremely quiet. You can’t even hear the spin up and doesn’t vibrate the desk. Besides, I have my external HDs behind my monitor so I don’t hear any (and don’t see them). I have gone through dozens of external HDs and I don’t know what’s wrong with your setup, but none has failed. I have a 3yr old Phantom 2TB that I use as a mirror and it’s still working strong. I have much older drives that were still working at the time of retirement (they were retired because I upgraded to bigger HDs). I have a D-Link DNS-323 NAS with two 5yrs old 1TB drives (now that you remind me, I could upgrade those too) and they show no signs of failure.
So I have a completely different experience that you regarding external HDs. Do we cancel each other out statistically speaking?
The two drives were a newer WD MyBook Essential 3TB and an older WD MyBook Essential on 1TB, they were running pretty well but then suddenly a few months ago pretty much everything decided to die on me; the 3TB external was the first to go, then my thumb-drive, then my processor, motherboard and PSU; and now my 1TB older external. I don’t know, I always have the worst of luck. Oh and from my experience they were not silent at all, I have an SSD for my system drive and I’ve got a pretty silent computer (fans go around 300 to 400 RPM when just surfing and such, which means I can not hear it at all) so the only thing I could hear was that darn hard-drive (formerly hard-drives)
Just come across a new and free kid to the block - Toolwiz Time Freeze - having a few teething issues with it as don’t seem to be able to turn it off when i want to, going to try on a fresh install of the image we want to protect and see if that works (had just uninstalled Reboot Restore RX). Also no documentation availabnle anywhere as far as I can see. Could be promising though and other users seem keen

Anyone tried it and have any comments?
Time Freeze is not really new. Tried it a few times, but it’s a sandbox app that you have to actively enable whenever you need it and then make a decision at the end (keep the changes or discard the changes). This is not a snapshot software. If you’re going to consider Toolwiz, look at their Time Machine app instead.
By the way their site has been under constant attack lately (so they say on their Facebook page) so the site isn’t working well.
Hi Marc
I think this version has only been around since April - and it’s the first time it’s cropped up in my many seaches for a solution!
You can set it up to start automatically when Windows starts every time in the settings options, so it is enabled automatically and then use it like Steadystate. We’re looking at this as, although snapshotting would be preferable, it is looking like an option that would cost us £1000 - £2000 currently whereas this is free. As a charity, free is preferable!
The key question for us will be whether it slows down our ancient laptops we’re planning to upgrade to Windows 7 too much - they will take Windows 7 with a RAM upgrade, but not currently sure if they will balk at running virtualisation as well. Performance hit didn’t seem too bad when I tested TTF on the current XP set-up, but I understand from our IT dept that doesn’t mean the hit couldn’t be worse when added to Win7.
Toolwiz Time Machine would be perfect if it works but I think they’ve pulled it as it’s not on their site - I understand the version that was around is a beta, so maybe it was just too buggy.
Had been planning to use Reboot Restore RX until I discovered there was no way to stop users from uninstalling it at boot-up other than relying on them not knowing the option was there. How they can say they offer it as a free option to replace SteadyState for libraries, schools etc when it doesn’t have password protection, I don’t know!
stay on topic guys, this topic is for CTM not others like it. I will lock this topic if needed.
Sorry Wasgij6 - it just didn’t seem like there’s much to say about CTM any more other than we still want it and it’s still not here! Alternatives seem like the only way to go for me :-[
i understand, i was really excited too back when they first announced it was being developed again. I dont really have much hope left that CTM is going to return.
You can discuss alternatives just create a new topic instead of flooding this one with offtopic posts.
This would be the proper place for a new topic.

Thanks
It’s not just if, it’s also when. For me, I can’t wait any longer, as I have a project that needs to go live in September and I need a set-up sorted for then. When CTM returns I’ll be here waiting, but in the meantime, I’ll have to look elsewhere…
:-\
It would be nice if non-CTM posts will be transferred to some new thread and let the discussion of other apps will continue there and only CTM related posts will appear here.
Seems like CTM is discontinued. Too bad it is glitchy.
For quite a couple of softwares they mentioned coming soon/expected months & its been very long time & nothing. The worst part is they dont give any info or reply in the forum, too bad on Comodo part.
Affected products are CTM, Cloud AV, Valkyrie, DACS, etc…
Razvan promised a much faster version of CTM in my meeting with him this week.
How about stability? Will it be able to save the snapshots to a secondary hard-drive? If the hard-drive protected fails, will CTM be able to restore a snapshot stored on a secondary drive onto a new replacement hard-drive? (Similar to AX64?) Also wondering how it will work with SSDs when it comes to TRIM. I’m guessing it’s hush hush about that?
Thanks for confirming that this project is not dead! :-TU
Faster, Stable…
