I had this app installed once, probably a couple of years ago. Recommended it to those on a Windows 7 Forum, especially to those who don’t backup. According on whom is doing the counting, 60 to 90% of Home users had no (as in zero) backup plan in place whatsoever.
Furthermore (this pertains to the topic), too many new computer buyers either aren’t reading their owner’s manual and/or disregarding inbuilt OEM popups (reminders) to create recovery media. This is important for two reasons. First, the recovery partition (normally hidden) can get corrupted, in particular if the original drive has been cloned to another or SSD. Then it’s useless.
Secondly, when it comes time for the HDD to be replaced (it will), Windows 7 can be iffy about being cloned onto a new drive. It may run fine, it may not. I’ve had it to go both ways. It’s best to have that recovery DVD set & not need it, than not have it & become SOL. No backup, no recovery media & sometimes downloading a Windows 7 ISO & creating a install DVD just doesn’t work with the COA on the computer.
This is where CTM fills a gap. Better than System Restore. Only catch, make sure that your HDD is defragged before using it, if not, until removal of the app, it can’t be defragged properly. Naturally, this doesn’t apply to those with SSD’s, but those who has to run the GC thingy should run it beforehand.
I say better than System Restore, because System Restore cannot be relied on to bail one out of a jam. Especially those who dual boots between two OS’s, like myself. Somehow during the switching back & forth, as well as major updates such as service packs, all System Restore points are wiped clean.
In any case, CTM snapshots weren’t affected be any of the above. Yes, if a SP is released & the user is satisfied, create a new snapshot & trash the rest. Very few wants to revert to the prior SP.
Being that I religiously backup with EaseUS Todo Workstation every week, I don’t need this offering, however many does. What is going on with the app? It’s been awhile, most of those I recommended it to says it was buggy (this is where preparation is key). I am hoping that it works with Windows 8.
I join those whom wants to keep the Comodo Time Machine rolling & hope that it’s not getting kicked to the curb. Huge potential in such an app for all Windows users.
