Safe to submit pw through ht authentication though no green indication shown?

I use the SSL cert service from my webb host (one.com). My site is setup with login (ht authentication) Things work fine in general but at the time the server asks for login credientals – the green padlock hasn’t yet shown up. Same goes for Firefox and Chrome. So, when I submit my credientals I’m unsure whether the connection is encrypted or not. Is it? No?
