Reissue SSL/ create CSR - special characters in name allowed

When creating a new CSR to reissue a SSL certificate and filling in the field “Company Name” it is asking for the legally registered name but doesn’t allow me to use special characters which the legally registered business name includes (it includes full stops and an exclamation mark). What do I do? Can I leave them out?
