RAM when updating

Every time the AV database is updated it takes about 180 - 250MB of RAM and also slows down everything. This often happens shortly after starting the PC, so it’s when I’m opening various programmes.

Is this supposed to happen? Seems a bit excessive, especially for a small download.

Also, if there is no download at all the notifications stay there for a long time (not keen on having balloons on but I do like to see what’s happening).

My RAM Meter also jumps about 200 MB during Comodo Virus Database updates shortly after I turn my Modem on.
