protection while ports are open

I’m wondering if having ports open to allow Internet access to certain applications, significantly reduces the protection? Obviously the protection is minimized, I think, but how minimized? Opening a specific port only allows that application, nothing else, correct? I didn’t find an answer when I searched ports, so please if there is another keyword I should search, please let me know.

If a port is opened because of an application monitor rule, then it is only opened for THAT application.
