I am new to the SSL certificate game. I obtained a free Positivessl certificate with the purchase of a domain name at namecheap.
I decided to use it before i pony up the cash for a higher-end certificate to see what this was all about.
To my dismay, I found that I started experiencing a delay in the site load time as soon as the certificate was integrated. To be more specific, when I go to the site I see everything almost istantly, but I cannot click on anything, scroll the page etc. for at least a few seconds.
I don’t think this is the certificate directly causing the problem. I think this is the hardware of the server you’re on.It seems like you’re on shared hosting.
Each SSL transaction does require a significant amount of processing power. This is why you should only use it whenever you need it (login pages, submitting Credit Card Numbers, etc.) , not necessarily across a whole site. (Unless you really really want to).
Thanks for the reply. It may be the hardware, but I would be somewhat surprised because this is hosted on a VPS and the hosting company (Servint) does not oversell or anything like that.
However, I am going to put the SSL on only the checkout page and see if that speeds things up.
