Portable Dragon

Greetings all!

Is there any chance to have portable version of the Browser similar to what Google Chrome Google Chrome Portable (web browser) | PortableApps.com
and Fox editions are providing

Sorry, Portable.com site gone to maintenance at this very moment so no link 4 the portable Fox editions provided … but you know what I mean.

This way we can test pre-Alpha/Alpha/Beta… whatever … otherwise - no way

Thanks in advance

A portable version is already there, look at the pinned topics, but it’s still at 0.9.0.16.

Any chance for an updated release? I love portable apps

Thanks, krensauce :-TU
I’ll have a look.
Cheers!

The megaupload has the newest one, Comodo Dragon Beta1 ver 0.9.0.22 -
The multiupload.com one has the older version

ahhh nice!
i have problems with it right now (file is temporarily unavailable) so I downloaded the other one and saw it was the old version lol.
Thanks for it, I’ll try later.

EDIT:
downloaded and works nicely. Thanks again to both comodo and jay2007tech for the portable version.

I noticed that the Cache and personal data are still stored into the “Documents & Settings” folder. A portable application should save all its data in its own folder, I wonder if there’s a way to achieve that. I’m still happy that I do not have to install it, but calling it Portable when in fact it isnt, may mislead some less expert user.

Thanks for sharing and pointing that out, krensauce

I didn’t have time yet to download for testing… now I’ll better wait.

Cheers!

If you can figure that out or make a better portable version, please do and share it with us.
Mine has the newest version and “experiance” has the older one. If that helps

Hi jay2007tech,

krensauce made a good and correct point.

His post regarding the portability was polite and moreover, as I can see it, he expressed his gratefulness for having the ability to run the application without the installation.
There were neither a real criticism nor any sort of anger towards the creator of the Portable Dragon Browser regarding the matter

on the contrary the suggested change is very helpfull, since when and if that fixed - the final version could be used as portable the same way as we can use Fox/Chrome/ etc.

I am not sure why there is kinda sarcasm in offering him to write better version? (please correct me and my apology if I got the tone of your message wrongly)

Portable App. should not touch neither registry nor write/save their settings anywhere else except its own directory/files resided in that directory. Portable App. must be completely self-contained.

Can you please share with us whether the newest version that you have doesn’t expose mentioned behaviour?

My regards

It’s exactly as SiberLynx said. I appreciate your efforts and the fact I’m using your version right now shows it, I only noticed a different behaviour than what i was expecting and reported it.

I agree :-TU

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic. I didn't even know that until I saw SiberLynx post. Poor choice of wording I guess :o

There are all kinds of knowledgeable people here. I was wondering someone can improve it. I would love to have a better portable version. Like there are 2 folders and an execute file. I love for someone to cram it into 1 packed .exe file like the portable ccleaner.

Sorry if you thought I was being rude

Thanks for replying, jay2007tech

Everything is cool & fine then ! :-TU

that’s why I did apologize ahead  suspecting that I can be mistaken

Cheers!

yeah all cool, I thought I was the one which has chosen the wrong words lol.
Anyway I did a quick look into it and it seems you’ll have to recompile the sources for it to be really portable.
The problem is that I don’t think Comodo released them nor they will do it (unless the license would have forced them to) unless there’s a true need.
They can probably add a quick option to let you select if it has to save all personal data in its own folder or in the usual one, that would fix all problems.

I can make it portable using VMware Thinapp… :stuck_out_tongue:

Naah! That’s not how you make porridge. Cheers!

I have created a simple NSIS launcher for Comodo Dragon that seems to work well.
Just copy the program folder contents into the “Data\Application” folder.

If you already have a user profile copy it into the “Data\ApplicationData folder”.
but It easiest to just move the local app data “Comodo” folder into the portable’s “data” folder and rename it to “ApplicationData”

FlashPlayer plugins go inside the Plugins folder within the Application folder.

So long as you dont have Comodo Dragon as your default Browser there should be no registry entries made.

However any registry entries for Dragon on the system will be restored when the portable closes
as will any Comodo Dragon profiles already in the local appdata folder.

The launcher will not redirect any registry entries from extensions you may have enabled only the base program and the flashplayer plugins.

Edit: The Portable’s download link Removed

Edit:
Alternate version, portable wont start if dragon is already running
Launcher also tries to keep the data folders’ size to a minimum.

Download the Portable Dragon Kit
A “Do-It-Yourself-Kit”.Just edit the script and rebuild.
Includes script and compiler to build the launcher the way the user wants

Or Xenocode Virtual App Studio if you’re not minted and can’t afford that.

Oh, I’m not “minted.” :stuck_out_tongue: I just happen to know some nice “friends” in Sweden… :o

The NSIS Launcher basically works but there is a bug. If you exit the program then start it again before it has a time to clean up the files in C:\Users\Name\AppData\Local\Comodo the user data is corrupted.

Yeah thats not a bug its just common sense to give the launcher time to do its thing 88).
AppData folder for all chrome browsers can grow very large very fast,
Even on an efficient system it may be a slow process.

Perhaps you can request John T. Haller to make you a proper launcher with all the safety codes in place to prevent such misshaps, the one I created is a minimalist approach using basic code
I am not a programmer just a hobbyist ;D

I personally always start Dragon in incognito mode and
keep my appdata folder slimmed down to just these files:

first run
localstate
bookmarks
webdata
preferances

(makes the portable open & close much faster and the whole portable stays at 33mb )
