Comodo without Antivirus seems to have low mem and and normal virtual mem (VM) use.
With the Antivirus, I’ve noticed Comodo has a peak mem use of over 220MB during scans/updates and a VM size of 120-300MB during normal use. Also the right click scan doubles this as it runs in a separate process. The recommended specs are a PC with 128MB RAM.
Idle and normal system use is much lower - mem 10-20MB and VM still 120-300MB.
Is this normal? Seems a little high to me. Or does it scale to how much mem is installed on a machine?
The above figures were on a 2GB computer. I’d like to know as I’m thinking of installing it on some 1GB and 512MB netbook machines, but don’t want it slowing to a crawl during scans and updates as users will complain. Is the 128MB recommended really adequate?
In the past I’ve successfully used Avast v5 on low mem machines and it seems to use much less system resources in worse case scenarios (up to about 70MB mem and 30MB VM during scans and updates). It also seems to use much lower CPU during scans.
Do you think on low mem and spec machines, Comodo plus Avast would be a better config than Comodo plus CAV?
I tested this on an old laptop with 384MB RAM. It runs ok, but really slows the system down on updates or scans.
Reason is CIS does not use less memory on lower end systems - still 220-300MB PEAK during scans and updates (60MB average) and 120-300MB Virtual mem (only recently it has it shot up to 300MB VM). It tripled the commit size on the laptop! Now that is some impressive resource usage, I had to increase the minimum size of the swap file to stop windows resizing.
It does run really slow when using these kind of resources on lower end machines, so the recommended specifications of 128MB RAM minimum is really pushing it. I guess it still runs fine during normal use however when not updating or scanning as the physical mem use drops to 10-20MB (although VM size remains really high).
Higher end machines should be able to absorb this, but I guess on the Atom netbooks I should use Comodo Firewall/Defense+ and Avast/other third party Antivirus until this is changed.
I run Comodo on an ancient IBM Thinkpad wth 512Mb of RAM with no issues. I have a large pagefile/swapfile which I have set as one contiguous 2Gb portion using pagedefrag from sysinternals.
Do not have your pagefile/swap as a dynamic resizing portion or you will have severe slowdowns.
I see that a bug report has been posted on this issue. But, I can’t find a verified bug report. Unless a bug report is posted in the correct format then it will not be verified and this is what the developers look at.
