Downloaded Comodo Firewall + Defense yesterday so I guess it’s v3 - I’m running on Windows XP. The network defense facility is showing 109 intrusion attempts. I’m not sure what this means - have I loaded the software properly? Should I do anything further? I did search the forums but didn’t come up with anything similar. I’m also running AVG8 free antivirus.

You can try to take a look at the logfiles and see whats happening there.
On the GUI go to Firewall and click on “View Firewall events” this should open the logviewer.
You can check out your version on the Misc, About page.
Can you tell us what got blocked in the firewall logging, so we can try to help out.
