need help configuring network on virtual box [locked]

hi it’s me again ;D
as you all might know, i have a new shiny sony vaio laptop with vista 64 OS.
and i have compatibility problem running a 16bit shared application from other computer.

so i decided to install XP SP2 on virtual box and tried to run the application in the virtual machine.

and i’m stuck… 88)

i can’t get this virtual machine to connect to other computer (let alone the internet).
any suggestion before i make a ceremony & sacrifice a goat to the devil?

thx before

ganda

Open VB and select the VM you have created. Click settings then choose Network. make sure the Attached to: is set to NAT. Then try running the VM.

One other thing, you’ll need to make sure your firewall rules are preventing NetBIOS out on to the Internet.

I just thought of something else. VB should prompt you to create a new network in CIS. If it doesn’t you’ll need to create a new zone. If I remember VB uses 192,168.56.1 192.168.56.255

err sorry i didn’t explain it clearly.
first of all, sorry if i sound stupid, i have no clue whatsoever about anything networking, ;D

i think this has nothing to do with CIS, with my luck i managed to connect to internet & other computer on the “real machine” (vista 64),i’ve even disabled CIS firewall to make sure it’s not firewall problem.

usually this is how i connect my comp to other:

  1. the comp with shared application (comp1) = 192.168.0.1
  2. i set my LAN address = 192.168.0.6
  3. a little bit clickie job (map network drive etc)
  4. victory dance

confirmed the attached to = NAT, it’s already set that way.
the firewall’s disabled

here i attach the screenshot of the diagnostic. i’ve tried the automatically get new IP address, still won’t work :-\

in the VM, the LAN icon says it’s connected, but i can’t ping 192.168.0.1 88)

in the VM if you open a command prompt and type ipconfig /all what do you get for an IP address?

Think about it this way. In essence, you’re creating a separate PC on your LAN, albeit in a VM. For it to be able to access resources, it needs access. Using NAT, it’s effectively using the host to give it the access it needs. Therefore, it will need to have some rules in the host firewall to get out…

btw, did you install the VBoxGuestAdditions?

this one?(attached)

err nope 88) should i?

err nope Roll Eyes should i?

It will make life easier when using the VM.

Ok, let’s take a step back.

It looks like you assigned an IP address manually?
Do you have a router, if so, what address range are you using?
What are you firewall settings?

err, yeah. i tried to do what i usually do to set the LAN, and i set the IP address to 192.168.0.6

hmm, i don’t know ><
the computers (and my laptop) are connected using HUB, and so i can connect to internet using any computer, i plug the DSL modem to the HUB as well, that’s all i know. the modem configuration was set by the ISP guy, i don’t know anything about it >
<

you mean CIS rules? cos i turned off the VM XP firewall & vista firewall as soon after i download CIS (and i didn’t touch the original windows firewall setting)

Ok. In you host, open the CIS firewall settings and put it on Custom Policy Mode, also shift the alerts up to the top. you can change it back later. Also make sure you have allowed CIS to automatically detect new networks.

Go back to the VM and let it obtain an IP address automatically.

Then tell me what happens…

Use VMware.

VMware is better for you.

Well, we’re all entitled to our opinions, I personally think VMWare is bloated… That’s my opinion, Oh and by the way VBox does much better 3D acceleration, but again, that’s my opinion

done (hmm, didn’t know the automatically detect private network was unticked 88))
now i’m at home (lunch time) so i can’t tell…BUT

at home, i connect to internet using the same kind of connection, a DSL modem, but it connects directly to my laptop, no HUB).

after i tried your suggestion, now i can connect to internet via the VM. looks promising :-TU
thx!

i’ll get back & report here once i’m at the office. :-*

actually the guy who made the software, (the other software called nesprint) also recommend me to use VMware. but VMware’s not free 88)

ow !ot!
since i’m still at home & can’t do much about it, i have question:

Is there an easy way to cut/copy-paste a file from VM directly to host? :-La

update:
still doesn’t work. :-
i cleared CIS log & then ping the comp1 (comp with the shared application) and here’s the log

If you install the VBoxGuestAdditions, we can do that. Give me an hour or so, I have to cook dinner. For now look at being able to mount a virtual CD…

there’s this mount cd option. is that it? what do i do with it?

no need to rush,i need to work anyway (i’m borrowing other’s computer ^_^).
you cook? 88) i always think you being a tough guy with S&W gun 88)
i’m gonna find that Vboxguestadditions.thx a lot! :-*

Let me explain little bit about Vitual box.
Actually, VMware’s NAT provide us vitual IP address.
But Virtual box only provide us vitual IP for local system.
You can’t connect from other system.
So you need to do following jobs.

VitualBox.

1.go to option.
2.go to Network.
3.Host configuration.
4.check the IP address(should be IPv3:192.168.xxx.xxx, subnet mask
255.255.255.0)
5.DHCP server(check use a server)
server address 192.168.xxx.100
server mask 255.255.255.0
Lower 192.168.xxx.101
Upper 192.168.xxx.254

6.now go to vitual windows XP option.
7.go to network choose ‘Host-only Adapter’,
'VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter.(if you only initialize
Host interface, you can’t use internet. So
make host interface to adapter1, adapter 2 to NAT.
Becuase you don’t use a router, you use a hub.
(if you use a router you don’t have to use virtual host.
Because your router give you virtual IPs.
Selcect vitual OS(XP)>connection type to 'Bridged Adapter>name to your
NIC>now it takes virtual ip from your router)

creasy

hey,thx for the advice creasy, so you’re not a cooking person, are you? 88)

ehm,just wanna make sure
this, i do to where? the virtual OS or the host?

and this one? virtual or host?

6.now go to vitual windows XP option. 7.go to network choose 'Host-only Adapter', 'VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter.(if you only initialize Host interface, you can't use internet. So make host interface to adapter1, adapter 2 to NAT. Becuase you don't use a router, you use a hub. (if you use a router you don't have to use virtual host. Because your router give you virtual IPs. Selcect vitual OS(XP)>connection type to 'Bridged Adapter>name to your NIC>now it takes virtual ip from your router)

i’ll do it first thing tomorrow morning, now i need to work.
thx! :-*

Well, that’s all very interesting but totally unnecessary. I just installed XP in a VM , set it to NAT (which is default) and it works.

I can connect to the Internet and I can share between the host and the client. I can also access shares on a different PC.

Don’t mess about with different adapters unless you have a need to do different things on different networks.
