mouse giving problem

i have a dell laptop, xp sp3 genuine. i have attached an external mouse. the problem is sometimes mouse doesn’t works. i cannot move it. when i check the device manager HUMAN INTERFACE USB is missing. and there is an entry in usb host controllers as unknown device. when i check the properties of unknown device and click on driver details it says no driver installed. if i remove the mouse and attach it again the message unknown device device has malfunctioned and windows cannot recognize it pops up. if i shutdown the system and restart it after 15-20 mins the mouse sometimes works for 5 mins and sometimes works more than a month and then the problem arises again. when the mouse works everything in the device manager is also fine. human interface usb also shows up and properties-driver details also shows up. can you guyz throw some light on this problem and provide a solution. by the way touchpad is working fine.

???

Do you get any alerts for the mouse software under View Defense + Alert? That may indicate a problem with CIS?

Do you see alerts in the Windows logs regarding the mouse. Logs can be found under Control Panel → Administrative Tools → Event Viewer.

when i click on mouse in control panel it says unable to connect to synaptics pointing device driver and when i click ok mouse properties windows open. is this the prob?? secondly if i want to reinstall the driver what should i do?? i mean in device manager there are two things about the mouse. one is human interface devices (usb human interface device) and mice and other pointing devices (hid compliant mouse and synaptics ps/2 port pointing device). which ones driver should i uninstall and reinstall. this is an laptop with winxp sp3. the mouse giving problem is an external optical mouse. touchpad is working fine. security software configurations are fine. i mean no alerts and no mouse logs.

What happens when you use the mouse in another system? When the same thing happens it is most likely a hardware issue.

i dont have another system. can you please tell me which driver should i uninstall and reinstall.

Any computer will do; I guess you are not the only person in your neighbourhood or social circle with a computer…;;
It is important to test it on another system to see if it is a hardware problem or a software problem. Please hook it up for a couple of hours on another person’s system.

can you please tell me which driver should i uninstall and reinstall.

Go to Control Panel → Administrative Tools → Computer Management → Device manger → look up and select the mouse → click right and choose uninstall or update.

When the mouse is a brand mouse go to the web site of the manufacturer and see if there is a more recent driver.

I would like to stress to try the mouse in the context of a different system as a hardware problem may be at hand.
