I feel they don’t care because this issue has gone on for 4 months now without a fix. From google hits it would seem enough people have this issue that it would be top priority. A fix is needed. Negative comments go much furture that good ones, since most happy people do not post. From recent post is looks like regular member are the ones working on a fix, not Comodo.
Hey, I don’t read or speak German! How do I know what to get, and where to get it? I can see that stuff’s free for home users, but what else? I dunno! ;D
I think that’s slightly unfair… they are most obviously working very hard. There’s lots of activity for both CAVS & CPF. But, you are entitled to your opinion. However, your best approach to resolve your specific problem is through Comodo Support directly. If you’ve already raised a support ticket, pursue it.
LM: No, not again.
I am not hear to bash Comodo. I mean after all I do run the firewall and am very happy with it. My point is that no fix has been found for this issue in 4 months. I would think that would be a fair enough amount of time to fix any issue. I had raised a support ticket. I got many suggestion both in the forum and by PM, even from the CEO. Heck I was even offered phone support. By the time the phone support was offered I could not even get online at all. By being offered phone support it must have been very important, at that time, to resolve this issue. I had to do a do restore from the disk.
Yea I know it was beta and things can go very wrong. One thing anyone would expect would at least be able to uninstall it.
Interesting about the backward keys, I saw quite a few of those but left them alone because I didn’t know what they were and couldn’t find what they related to.
Is the Startdreck program in english?
I noticed that part of the web site has english text.
Not sure how it will help, but optomistic person that I am gladly add to a r s enal (why can’t I post the word a r s e n a l ? ) of tools to fix stuff.
Still hangin in there just haven’t had any brainstorms lately.
Dr Pete
Sorry, please use this StartDreck link. It’s a sub-page of the one I posted. The first bit is in English & the program is in English as well… assuming you don’t download the Deutsch version, of course.
You can’t spell that word because the first four letters spell “bottom” in UK English. You’ve been censored! ;D
Edit: I love what they say about StartDreck on that page: It shows you a ‘F*** Owful Long List of Windows AutoStart methods’ ;-)" and it certain does that. ;D
And yet, the censor didn’t catch “assassinate” in my earlier post (which I fully expected it to). I guess that just shows us that the censor was built on UK English…
I agree. And if it were paid software, I’d really be cheesed. I’ve had similaruninstall issues w/Norton, McAfee, and other softwares, for which no solutions were provided. The only option was to manually clean everything out, do a complete Restore, or reformat the HD (or all three). In this case, Beta 1.x was uninstalled; there’s just something left from the installer package that’s causing this ongoing annoying popup.
I personally feel that Comodo’s done their part to compensate for the glitchiness of the installer package. Thru the forum, they provided a “manual” uninstaller and “manual” registry restoration, via a small command-line executable that eliminated the main aspect of the program. They also provided, thru the forum, command-line instructions for the user to truly manually uninstall the program and restore the registry key backup created at installation. Thru email w/me (and thus I presume, with others) they provided specific regedit instructions, to delete specific keys.
I don’t (in my mind) expect them to try to resolve an issue that arose from the MS Installer’s operation (whether on install or uninstall), inasfar as it relates to MS Installer. They changed installers, and provided work-arounds. That’s more than I’ve gotten elsewhere.
I don’t work w/computers or software professionally in any way, other than as a user, and it does not bother me in that regard to try to work thru a problem like this. It’s an interesting (sometimes frustrating) challenge. However, I see where it could look bad, and there’s probably room for improvement on Comodo’s part. It’s a known issue, but it’s also kind of a odd issue, in that it relates to the installer package (which is kinda outside their AoC).

Kail, Dr Pete, (others…) check out the discussion at this link, as it relates to this issue…
Most specifically, see Bill’s last post about the missing components being the root of the problem.
Thoughts?
I say you should d/l and go for it Little Mac …Let us know how hard it crashes (:LGH)
Not sure if I can hurt my system any longer, my last restore wasn’t quite so clean and although the machine is working my brand new 300GB hard drive is waiting in the wings for the clean install.
I think I am just amazed at how many times I have gotten BSOD and been able to recover.
Dr Pete
Yeah, one thing I know is that Restore doesn’t really work the way we think it should. My impression, based on my experience, is that it only overwrites current program or system files/reg entries/etc present at the time of Restore w/the identically-named items which existed at the time the Restore Point was created. In addition, it kinda gets rid of other system changes which occurred in between, but not really. A case in point, I installed ServiWin, then Restored w/all this stuff, and although the menu item was gone for ServiWin (shortcut, etc), and the main executable, the rest of the stuff was still there (you’d think it would be gone, but it wasn’t).
My impression may not be correct; it’s only what it is… However, it makes sense to me; at any rate, Restore has its limits. The better method would be creating full image backups on a separate drive, and doing a complete replacement of the entire HD - that is a true restoration!
LM
PS: I’m waiting on another response from the other forum. I did some stuff he didn’t tell me to do, and I think it kinda cheesed him… I just hafta keep pluggin’ at it, ya know…
ok, i am reading the forum postings and I see there is no solution yet. Since I downloaded the trail version, my system has been rendered virtually useless. I can boot up, but really cannot navigate anywhere, sometimes i can get control panel up, but i see from the posted messages that even if i could get to the uninstall, that will not work. Here’s my question, I get the Comodo popup that says my trial license expires on a certain day and time; what happens after the trial expires - will it render itself disabled? Probably NOT, but I have to ask. Please answer this question. ALSO, I am desparate to know if it is possible to take my PC to a computer backup and recovery shop to get all my important programs and documents backed up to a zip drive or even transferred to a new computer. Is that possible? COMODO Support Team - PLEASE answer - Jason, Paulo, Meliah - anyone?
I finally got rid of the Comodo AV and the annoying MSI message - thanks to the one of the previous posts that suggested searching for reverse GUID’s in the registry.
Adieu Comodo !!!
After the trial period, the only thing that will happen is that you will see a nag screen, asking you to register. The softwares functionality remains as it was before the trial period expired.
Have you tried booting in safe mode with network support, downloading the uninstaller and runningit while in safe mode?
Hope this helps,
Ewen
Drat! I wish that had worked for me!
Life is not meant to be easy for us for some reason :THNK
And to add to the “tools section” here is another good free whats running and starting on your machine program.
I just haven’t had the time to play with it any longer, will keep checking and maybe in the next few days when I get some more time I will revive the “fix quest” (:WIN)
Look forward to seeing you then…
The Windows BBS guy requested that I provide the Enumerating Active Setup Stub Path section of my Hijack This log, so I did. I’m waiting on a response from him.
Kail, I checked the two files you listed over in the other thread earlier today; the GUIDs were not in there (one had been previously, but I removed it - it didn’t stop this issue). I did find the CAVS 1.1 setup package, which I also removed - it didn’t stop the issue, either! ;(

Perhaps your MSI files are hidden somewhere else on your system. Scan your entire system looking for setup.exe (any case) & *.msi. Investigate anything not mentioned previously or suspect.
Actually, I don’t if you have or not… because I can’t find it… anyway, you’re getting an MSI message flash on the screen, when starting programs. Right? If so, then MSI’s default action would be to create a corresponding event log entry to match the briefly displayed message. What does your MSI event entry say (if you have it)?
Kail,
Here’s the event log entry regarding the MSI popup.
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001
Date: 11/10/2006
Time: 8:34:34 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: WCPLAPTOP
Description:
Detection of product ‘{6617B209-C45E-4ED7-86A6-5055D17BFBEE}’, feature ‘DefaultFeature’ failed during request for component ‘{E79E3ED7-50A7-49F7-8C11-EF43F5650180}’
In reading thru what the Windows Installer Cleanup utility is supposed to do, it seemed like perhaps the popup is being triggered by an “In Progress” install, but the registry entries that msizap.exe would search for do not contain either of these GUIDs, and some of the entries are not there, which would be the case if MSI had deleted them on completion of the install (as it’s supposed to do).
BTW, thread I refer to here

So, just to confirm. You have no registry references with the above 2 IDs & no directories with those names?
