One simple rule that served me well is:
NEVER, ever enter any private data if you clicked on a link!

If you typed the URL yourself, and of course you know that domain is safe then go ahead.
If you typed the URL and put it in your favorites list, then you are ok.

A variation on Melih’s rule of thumb is to never click on a link in an email that leads you to a site that is asking for your information like login or personal information.
