First AV Database update

I just installed 3.10.102194.530 of CIS.

Let me first of all say that we do NOT all have a broadband internet connection.

I am very disappointed in Comodo. After installing the last two CIS upates, I have had to let my computer run for approximately 4 hours on my dial up connection to update the virus database. I gave up last night because it was 2 am and I needed sleep!

This seems to only be a recent problem with the last couple CIS versions. Has something changed that requires a MUCH larger virus database download?

The biggest thing I cannot understand here is that version 3.8.65951.477 was only ~34 MB to download and required a small database download. Now version 3.10.102194.530 is up to ~78 MB and then wants to download another ~80 MB for the virus database.

This is small cheese if you have a broadband connection. But, on dial-up - we are talking HOURS of download time here.

I will point out that this is only the FIRST AV database update I am talking about. Subsequent ones are rather quick and painless.

If Comodo insists on maintaining the need for a HUGE initial virus database download, I WILL change IS programs.

I wouldn’t take the time to send this message, but I am very curious what has changed and WHY.

Thanks for any help in advance,
Chad

the DB will actually start to decrease in size in the coming weeks, keep on eye on the C:\Program Files\COMODO\COMODO Internet Security\scanners\bases.cav file and watch, it should start going down.

Also note that since CIS 3.8, the signature database (count) has grown immensely, hence the larger size.

Congratulations on your speed. It took me over 15 hours to update the DB after install.

Hi,
The new release of CIS is great but has a (very) big bug : the install package contains the version 1157 (!) of the viruses database. So, if you make a new install of this software, you need to download over 400 .CAV files - near 50 Mb of extra data :o - to update your product. That’s unacceptable and could discourage many new potential users.

Until this is resolved I am sad to admit I am switching to a different internet security product.

I tried again one more time and after downloading over 100 MB [at 5.5 KB/sec!!!] it still said the AV database had never been updated.

So, while I hate to give in, I do NOT have the time to spend sitting waiting for this product to udpate itself over a dial-up connection.

I think I already know the answer, but is there any way I can download just the database that needs updated [on a different computer] and then put it in the necessary location on my home computer?

Or…
Could I just zip up the entire Comodo folder on my laptop [which has XP and the latest comodo] and just unzip that to my desktop and be “up to date” without waiting for this hugea** virus database update.

C ya,
Chad

Although its best product, updating comodo antivirus on dial up internet connection is too much time consuming i agree with that, and right at this moment there is no way that you can get an offline update installer like avast, avira, kaspersky, etc. give.
There is still a way to update your database in the way in which you are asking,
Let me show you how i do it,

What you need to do is to replace c:\program files\comodo\comodo internet security\scanners\bases.cav with the updated versions in other PCs.

You may need to rename exisint bases.cav before doing this. If you cant, just disable D+, terminate cmdagent.exe and retry.

Hi,
Anyone knows approximately when will offline updates be available?
Thanks

I don’t recall every seeing a firm commitment to making them available.

Thanks for the reply.
This would have been a good feature to add though.

This feature is already in Antivirus wishlist, so it might be implimented soon.

Thanks, Deven. I copied the file to a temp directory fromthe previous version which was up to date on defs, the copied it back after the install. I had tocheck for updates so it would recognize that it was there, but now I’m good to go.
