DXTory Fails to start and CIS does not tell you what's wrong [V6][M246]

A. THE BUG/ISSUE (Varies from issue to issue)
[ol]- Summary - Every attempt at running DXTory ExKode | Home fails. It Displays trial confirmation dialogue and after accepting, it quits without a message.

  • If not obvious, what U expected to happen: Display Main program window.
  • If a software compatibility problem have U tried the conflict FAQ?: Disabling antivirus, behaviour blocker and firewall does nothing.
  • Any software except CIS/OS involved? If so - name, & exact version: Dxtory ver2.0.120 (2012/10/06)
  • Any other information, eg your guess at the cause, how U tried to fix it etc: de-installing COMODO Internet Security 6.0.264710.2708 resolves problem (same thing happened with previous version as well).
  • Always attach - Diagnostics file, Watch Activity process list, (dump if freeze/crash). If complex - CIS logs & config, screenshots, video, zipped program (not m’ware)
    [/ol]

B. YOUR SETUP (Likely the same for each issue, so you can copy forward)

COMODO Internet Security 2013 v 6.0.260739.2674) Internet Security mode.

  • Have U made any other changes to the default config? (egs here.): Unchecked "filter loopback traffic in firewall settings. No other settings seem relevant (like disabling sounds)

Could you try the approach outlined: here., and report back.

You’ll need to adapt it to v6, and if you need help with that I can temporarily more you there.

Best wishes

Adding it’s folder to “detect shellcode injections exceptions” Resolves issue. Thanks.

Thanks for the update. Could you please look in your logs to see if there was anything to warn you of this. If not it’s still a valid issue. CIS should have told you what it was blocking.

I have in logs entry from defense+ informing me that: “The publisher of Dxtory.exe has NOT digitally signed their application. Hence the origin of this application should not be trusted. Digital Signing helps with verifying the authenticity of applications. If you are unsure, we strongly recommend you press the “Run Isolated” button.” I answered that dialogue “allow” I did not run application isolated.

I can’t find anything that could explain program malfunction.

OK I’m going to log the fact it did not tell you what the restriction was as a bug. It’s an old one

Thank you very much for your report in standard format, with all information supplied. The care you have taken is much appreciated by Comodo, and will increase the likelihood that this bug can be fixed.

Developers may or may or may not communicate with you in the forum or by PM/IM, depending on time availability and need. Because you have supplied complete information they may be able to replicate and fix the bug without doing so.

Many thanks again

My friend finally upgraded to CIS 6.0 and when he installed Dxtory, it was all fine and when it asks you for you licences file, when you find it and it registers, every time you open Dxtory it just crashes. (Was not happening on 5.10, and I when I tried same thing happens, program crashes.)
We both clicked ‘Allow program’ and Run Unlimited.
Even with Comodo fully closed + Terminated it still does not work. If you uninstall Comodo 6.0 it works again.

You may find that exempting Dxtory directory from the CIS behavior-blocker will solve this. Please report back if it does.

This issue appears to me to be the same as one already on file. Accordingly, I will merge them, if that’s OK. You can locate the merged report by following the link in the email notification.

If you don’t agree please PM any active mod with your reasons and, if appropriate, they will unmerge the issue.

Many thanks

I was experimenting a bit more and found out that, un-checking “detect shellcode injections” option instead of adding exception for DXTory folder. Does not work.

It looks like this setting does not actually disables that feature. Is there any safe application that does shellcode injection thing and Comodo shows message about it so I can see if that setting does something?

Just wanted to check if this is fixed for you in 2801

Best wishes

I just removed my exception and tried again, aaand it seems to be working! 8)

Thanks Comodo!

That’s great news, please post accordingly if it comes back, in this topic.

There is no improvement on my side, tested with DXtory version 1.20 (one I found problem on) and 1.22 (latest version).

Changes in configuration since last test: OS reinstalled due to unrelated issues, No more Avast, switched to Comodo anti-virus.

With exception in place DXTory still works properly.

Attaching new diagnostic report in case it’s useful.

Actually I did not use avast in original test as well, now that I think about it, so disregard that.

Okay strangely after a computer restart, Dxtory is doing the same problem again.

It still seems adding it to the exceptions is the only way to properly fix it.

Thanks for the feedback. Do you get a meaningful alert? Buffer Overflow or something?

Just updated to 6.1.276867.2813, there is no improvement.
