Antivir Personal edition Classic is a reasonably good anti-virus considering it is free. However it does not have a very high detection rate for worms and backdoor trojans and lacks the ability to scan incoming and outbound e-mail for infected file attachments and also lacks the ability to quarantine infected files.
The latest beta of CAVS (2.0) gives great protection and includes email scanning and the ability to quarantine files. Virus detection is also much improved over the 1.1 version and should now be on a par with many mainstream anti-virus packages. Detection rate is improved daily. The inclusion of HIPS gives an added layer of protection that is not matched by any other free antivirus software.
It must be remembered that CAVS 2 is still a beta and will be much improved before final release; whilst alternative programs such as Antivir, Avast and AVG are better at this stage for many inexperienced users CAVS will take free antivirus software to a new, higher, level when it is released as a final version. Watch this space…
