Hi Guys,
Very strange failure happened with Defense+
Out of the blue Comodo’s icon disappeared from Sys Tray.
I’ve seen that couple of times in the past. It is very rare event. CPF is still active and just firing up GUI worked without any bad implications.
This time I did the same … All looked and worked fine.
It was time for restart anyway, because PC was on like for 3 days.
I restarted and got Wallpaper (no icons), Taskbar with Start button and Quick Launch icons…. no SysTray icons and hanging (spinning) mouse pointer – System was very busy.
5 minutes was enough for me. I pressed Reset Picture after resetting was the same.
PC was powered Off. After hot reboot I got all my Desktop Icons back, but there were no responses.
I clicked a few – nothing. It was time for thinking and I left PC alone.
10min or a bit more later all my clicks came alive. I had 5 windows opened instantly all together and Defense+ went bananas with alerts like Explorer.exe IExplorer.exe
Firefox window was opened already - no questions asked.
I don’t use IE at all so I never clicked that one… And so on… All was allowed and when the madness settled down, sure I looked into my Proactive Settings
I found that all Firewall settings are in place but the Defense+ Security Policies list is just empty – literally (!) except those few rules created when I just answered few min ago.
Well, I worked like that, answering all Alerts for an hour or two. Then I tested restart few times. All was fine (no 10 min delays).
Currently I re-Imported all settings saved like 2 - weeks ago, which sure bought those wiped out defaults back like “Comodo Internet Security”; “Windows Updater”; “Windows System Application” plus hundred of my Custom settings
Basically it seems like it’s working fine now.
My question is - did anybody encounter anything like that? I haven’t seen anything like that yet since early firewall v2.
Another question to developers:
Is there any information I can gather in such situation in case that will happen again?
My regards
I can’t confirm and keeping my fingers crossed. Also making a back up of my config now. I started clean with 3.9 RC yesterday.
Hi EricJH,
Thank you for reply.
Exporting periodically is sure helpful thing to do.
Definitely that was some strange and rare (I hope) bug happened.
Bad thing is that because of non responsiveness of PC not much you can do at that moment (10 min “moment”
) in order to investigate.
Another bad thing that less patient user may start taking measures, which could be damaging.
Anyway, nothing can be done now rather than continue working with recovered Defense+ settings keeping an eye on it.
Actually few thing I may ask you, since you are trying 3.9 already.
What is really annoying in current version regarding Policies Lists :
- inability to Search / Sort etc.;
- It takes ages to display the lists especially Defense+. That is unacceptably slow
Are there any improvements in this particular area in 3.9?
My regards
Some people have complained of slow update when a new rule is created and save. If this is because all CIS settings are saved when a new rule is added and it crashed while doing this then all settings could be lost (it deletes the rule set then saves it all). This is speculation but it would be safer and quicker if just the new rule was saved.

Hi tcarrbrion,
Thank you for reply.
This area (managing policies lists) definitely requires improvements.
There are many items in Wish List regarding that. At the same time I never experiences failures.
In the past, before CIS, there were several cases when you need restart or two before Imported settings were applies but it seems that is fixed.
This time there were no manipulations with Policies. I just had few windows opened: Comodo’s forum Word and Photoshop. Since I have Task bar set to auto-hide I may’ve not even noticed Comodo’s icon disappearance. Coincidentally I switched Applications, Taskbar became visible and all of a sudden I noticed that icon, which was there vanished before my eyes. Other described stuff followed.
Basically I asked EricJH whether there are improvements (speeding up) in displaying policies only because new CIS beta was mentioned.
It looks like that could be a problematic area.
Actually I recalled one case where you can “hide” CIS icon (no wiping out the content though that time).
When the list is being prepared for displaying (takes sooo long!) the buttons at the right are not displayed yet, the slider is non responsive but you can still resize /close window. That’s when CIS icon can disappear.
Then, when buttons are eventually displayed you still cannot use the slider yet in order to scroll but you can hit Purge and that will work. You cannot edit in such situation because you have to wait when whole list is ready in order to highlight the item. I haven’t try Adding, yet… but anyway, the Lists management has to be improved.

It has not changed. I just deleted a rule in D+ to see and it took approx 10s.
Hi EricJH,
Since you mentioned some figures here is what I calculated
I have 315 items in Defense+ (it would be nice to have Total displayed somewhere, as a matter of fact
)
It takes > 1 min (!) to “push” them all into the list until the slider can be easily used. That is not good enough. Dual Core 2.8GHz; 2GB ram, fast disk, 512MB Video dedicated, what else?..
My regards
It was in the range of 10-15s with my previous set of rules. I did a clean install of CIS 3.9 RC1 this weekend so my rules set may be smaller for now.
Since I am on older hardware, check my sig, I am wondering if there aren’t any contributing factors on your system.
