Man - you are right!!! I installed CTM on “C” and now it works as it should …
… you may want to add an according hint in the installer dialogue to avoid others running into the same trap as i did?
Thank you again,
JePe

I would suggest to the developers, in order to prevent future confusions to other users, to show only the “space information in CTM maintenace” before and after compacting. The space information in CTM in protection settings before and after current snapshot can be shown separately. This is to prevent future confusions by other users. Thx.
Good idea
Thank you very much
no problem. this is for the promising future of CTM software. hurray
after I checked “synchronize these files or folders when restoring system to another snapshots” and click the 3-dots button, I selected and saved various folders under
Is it a bug ?

Issue - After completing install of Time Machine RC and rebooting, I get an “Error 8801 - Insufficient space to install protect system” anad then CTM uninstalls itself once Windows starts.
Solution - Disconnect or disable all USB storage devices (including card readers in printers 88))
This is a known issue, please unplug or disable all printers, card readers and removable devices then install ctm again. After installation completes, you may reenable those devices.

1.c: how can you add this item to the list
regards,
Wouldn’t it be better if the installer said something along the lines of “Hey, you’ve still got an X, Y or Z attached. You’ll need to disconnect or disable them to continue.”
Particularly since this is a known issue and keeps biting people on the bum. ![]()
Yeah, everytime i see this error on “not enough space”, i skipped. these bugs are really small bugs . ultimately, rollback is still functioning well. i have tried with it a couple of times. We are waiting for the next better version of CTM . when will it be ?
Seems that no one has tried this synchronizing feature.
I had but not with >5 entries in the sync list. I had three folder to sync, but the re-syncing was horrendously slow.
I now have the variable data (that used to be synced) on a separate physical non-CTM protected disk.
How was the speed on your syncing operations?

oh i didnt restore yet since i post on sync.
Syncing a folder is (being as kind as I can be) dog sloooooooooooooooow!! The restore with sync process is, in a nutshell, 1) restore the selected snapshot, 2)then, in the background, mount the last snapshot, 3) extract the folders to be synced and 4) then overlay them over the restored snapshot. The end result is the selected snapshot is overlaid with the synced data.
It was so slow, my best option was to install a second physical drive and move the data I wanted protected to there, where it is handled by backup jobs, rather than CTM.
IMHO, CTM is best suited in a corpoprate type environment, where changes to the boot volume are prohibited under normal circumstances. In this type of environment, CTM is brilliant. In any other environment where there is constantly variable data on the boot volume, like almost every home or SME PC I know, syncing in CTM is too laborious a process for a normal user to endure and too time consuming to win fans in the business world.
Mind you, the concept of separating the OS/apps and the user generated data onto two physical disks is a sound idea that is applicable to everyday users.

What are the benefits of separating data from OS/apps onto 2 physical disk ? currently I am using a laptop. so i assume there’s not enough space for a second physical disk.
If your data is on the second disk then a hard failure of the boot drive does not mean a total loss of all data not yet archived. Replace the boot volume and reimage and you’re off and running. Also, rampant data growth will not impact OS performance by leaving the boot volume low on space.

I never said my plan was flawless.
Look at how Apple’s Time Machine works - everything goes onto a second disk. On Macbooks, the second disk is a USB portable drive.

Thank you Ewen . Currently i have an external hard disk connected to my laptop. often, i do imaging on my laptop and backup into external HDD. b4 i do imaging, i will uninstall CTM and move some new essential data (can be 100GB) to the external HDD. after that, i will re-install CTM and then copy back (to prevent CTM from using too much space) the essential data to my laptop. in this case, i will have 2 sets of data both at internal and external.
Any suggestions/comments are welcome.
