CID, cant change from Yahoo *start page* search engine

Hi, i named this similar to the thread here cause that issue sounded similar but looks to have only been an issue with how the search engine options were ordered in the menu bar search box (in Manage Search Engines…) so all they needed was to move something else to top of the list.

My issues that CID makes Yahoo the only search option with the search box on the “Comodo IceDragon Start Page” (aka about:home). This is not how Firefox 24 (or PaleMoon 24) behaves, instead with those, the home/start page search box always replicates whatever search engines currently active in the menu bar search box.

Is there any logical reason Comodo has chosen to lock Yahoo as the only search option from the home/start page? Or why by default an actual Yahoo url is listed as the home page in Options > General > Home_Page. Infact to even show “Comodo IceDragon Start Page” the first time on a clean profile you need to delete that Yahoo url, and still it wants you to search Yahoo

Fwiw, im no fan of Google so could understand someone at Comodo decided Yahoo was the lesser of two evils for a search provider, but why lock people into using just Yahoo when they wanto search from the home/start page? Its just better off not being there if thats all itll allow

Would any of the developers be happy to share the secret of unlocking the normal behavour for this search box on the home/start page? Or was this actually how Firefox 22 used to behave, i dont recall.
Mod edit: Fixed broken link, Captainsticks.

??? Captainsticks, i saw you edited this earlier, not sure what ‘Fixed Broken Link’ refers to

To update, i stumbled on clues from here that expected to sort the problem out but didnt, heres the details

on a new profile of CID:

went to about:config, typed keyword.url, doublle clicked it and typed in DuckDuckGo — Privacy, simplified.

installed their standard search box addon and in “Manage Search Engines” moved it to the top of the list

went to about:config and typed browser.search.defaultenginename showing its listed as DuckDuckGo

My home page is STILL locked on Yahoo >:( specifically Yahoo Search - Web Search (which is what the origiinal keyword.url was)

Heres something interesting in context to this: while both Firefox and Palemoon home pages will always replicate the search engine thats active in the optional search box, they also change the display of the home page search box when Googles active, making the box shorter, and adding an image of its name to the left, and also doesnt show the name of the engine in grey letting inside the box like the others

Iow CIDs rigged up Yahoo to behave the same way Google does on the start page of Firefox and Palemoon, except it locks Yahoo to stay there

Hi nonat,
The here link in the opening post was broken.

The home page can be set to your preference through the GUI.
Setting up Your Homepage

Oh ok, so the posting and editing require moderator permission, could explain why i tried for 10 minutes to resend an edit of the last post unsuccessfully, and posting takes a few refreshes too :o

To your comment, do you see the irony with what it says for the last option bottom of the page?

Setting Default Home Page

If you want to set the home page to Comodo IceDragon Start page with Yahoo search bar, click Tools > Options > General and click ‘Restore to Default’.

Thats the start page option im talking about (its also called about:home) So even the official help guide says its locked on Yahoo. Would that the settings hard coded into the icedragon.exe?

Hinonat,

There has been an inconsistent glitch in the forum software causing some posting issues.
Posting or editing your own post does not require Moderator permissions.

First up I apologise for not reading your opening post thoroughly. :-[
I thought you was saying you could not set your preferred home page, my mistake.

The Dragon ‘about:home’ page is tied (Coded) to ‘Yahoo’ as a result of an arrangement between 'Yahoo" and ‘Comodo’.
I do not know any details about this arrangement and further information about this if required would need to be answered by a Staff member.

Once again sorry for the confusion.

Its no problem, and thanks for the confimation

btw im pretty sure now glitch with having posts processed on this forum is that theres incompatibility with my proxy’s current settings because turning the proxy off fixed the problem straight away yesterday, so dont consider it a problem but a quirk, and since im not proficient on changing proxy settings wont ask for help till understanding what to ask later, and dont need to have proxy on here anyway. Its all good

Edit: yep, i can still post comments fine today without the proxy, so it that was the problem (HMA VPN Pro using the standard OpenVPN settings)

Thanks for the information about how you fixed your posting problem nonat. :-TU
I thought you might have been getting plagued with the following issue.

Kind regards.

So how do you fix the problem. Still can’t change from Yahoo! Which means me and my clientele will just dump IceDragon (46588 desktops/laptops). Glad we are only testing on 3…

Hello,

The search engine in the “about:home” page is hardcoded and cannot be changed. We will keep this aspect in mind when the we move forward with IceDragon.
Alternatively, you can use the address bar to perform searches on any selected search engine. This removes the need for a search box in the new tab/home page, a search toolbar or navigating to the search engine web page.

Regards.
