Bug: Can not copy CDs.. PC restarts

Hello!

I just came across a strange bug from the latest Beta from Comodo. Whenever I want to copy a CD into my PC, after about 45 seconds or 1 minute while the copying process is running my PC suddenly restarts. :frowning:

I reproduced the bug twice, then I disabled Comodo and I could easily copy about 3-4 CDs without any other issues.
Can you reproduce this ?

I use Windows XP SP2, ASUS CD-RW drive.
Thank you!

Now I got another PC restart… without any reason. (Comodo was enabled).
I went to Event View → System and I have seen the following error:
"Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 9/2/2007
Time: 11:02:20 AM
User: N/A
Computer: RDR
Description:
The AMON service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified. "

What does it mean ?

I can’t confirm your findings with Nero under Vista.

To see what file belongs to the Amon service download Autoruns from Sysinternals: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx .

When the program has started. That may take more than half a minute go to File → Find and type Amon in the search box. Then you will see the path to the file that belongs to the service. Then open Explorer to see if it is not there.

Thank you for the answer, but I was not using Nero… I was simply copying a CD into my PC: Select files, Copy, Paste.

Autoruns was of a great help. As I suspected it was AMON from NOD32. I had it installed 6 months ago before Avira, and it seems their uninstaller doesn’t clean everything and also the files left over are still monnitoring and starting with my PC. (:AGY)
I deleted imon.dll and amon.dll from system32. For imon I used Unlocker because it was used by svchost, explorer, yahoo messenger and even Avira… finally I restarted my PC. (:SAD)

Hope it will be ok now.

Unfortunately the problem persists… I still get my PC restarted but the error is this:
"Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 9/2/2007
Time: 8:27:51 PM
User: N/A
Computer: RDR
Description:
The Plustek USB Scanner service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

Perhaps Comodo verifies too “paranoid” de I\O streams and it generates certain errors\incompatibilities that go to BSOD and restart. :frowning:
I think I’ll stay with Windows firewall till the problem is fixed.

Later Edit: Another error I got when PC restarts is this one:
"Event Type: Error
Event Source: Cdrom
Event Category: None

Is it an old CD Rom burner? Can you borrow one for testing from a friend?

Well, it’s not an old one. In fact the same thing happens with both CD-RW and DVD-RW drives.
Anyway, now I get PC restarted even without copying a CD. See the errors above.

Usually a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) gives better information. We need to set Windows to produce a BSOD instead of rebooting.

Here is the way to go: Click right on My computer → Properties → Advanced → Boot and recovery options (bottom of the screen) → now untick "automatically reboot computer. When you get a BSOD we need to know the following:
Error name: something like IRQ_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL
Error code: something like 0X0000008F
When given file that was mentioned that may be involved with the crash.

When you feel up to it take the error name and code to Google (newsgroups) and give it a spin.

Thank you!
I’ve done what you said. Now I uninstalled Comodo because it was really annoying to get restarts. Posting the error name and error code will help Comodo’s team to fix it ?
Because I don’t want to reinstall Comodo in vain.

The error codes may help to point to the (general) direction where to look for the problem. Just wait for them to show up and start from there. That is the general way to go with driver/hardware related problems to which BSOD’s often refer to.

Keep us posted.
